3 Helen Hogarth s 90th Birthday Celebration We celebrated Helen Hogarth s 90th birthday with a reception in the parlor after the 11AM worship service on October 8th. Third Grade Bible Presentation The United Methodist Men presented third graders Billy, Will and Trace with bibles specially inscribed for each of them by the United Methodist Men at the 10:00 am worship service for the Food & Faith on the Fifth Sunday on October 29th. 4 Food & Faith on the Fifth Sunday Thank you to everyone who helped with and came out in support of October 29th s Food & Faith on the Fifth Sunday. Nick Ruxton, the Virginia Conference videographer (and Charlie and Elaine Ruxton s grandson) presented a special program on the conference s 2017 trip to Cambodia. 6 Here are some other ways to get involved: Operation Christmas Child We are only a couple of weeks away from the Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week, November 13-20! We have raised a total of about $282, which is enough to cover shipping of 31 boxes. Our goal is 100 boxes, so we need about $600 more to meet that goal! Please continue to bring in your spare change, and consider making a larger donation--checks can be made out to BHUMC with "Operation Christmas Child" noted on the check. 1. Pack a shoebox! Pick up a box downstairs in the fellowship hall and follow the instructions on the brochure inside the box. No liquids, candy, toothpaste, used items or war-related items, please. Make sure to include $9 to cover shipping of your box. 2. Donate your time! We will have a packing party with the youth group in mid-november and we will have opportunities to volunteer at the collection center (Crestwood Presbyterian Church) from November Pray! For the shoebox packers, processing center workers and for the children who receive the gifts. 7 United Methodist Women At our October 16 th meeting we dedicated our program to a Social Action project for prison inmates. The project was to assemble hygiene packages for the inmates. In the prison system, inmates are expected to purchase their own hygiene products and we would like to help them by making these packages to be given to them as Christmas gifts. The James River District has more prisons than any other part of the state of Virginia and there are many ways that we as Christians can be involved in helping the chaplains who serve in these prisons. We packed 30 hygiene kits at the meeting and also decided to purchase other gifts and cards for the inmates for Christmas. All of these items and kits will be delivered to the prison chaplains for distribution. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - it was a joy to help Helen Hogarth celebrate her 90 th birthday on October 8 th. We wish Helen all God's blessings and look forward to celebrating more birthdays with her. UPCOMING EVENTS - On November 5th, we traveled to Trinity UMC in Disputanta for the James River District's Fall Day Apart. We again worked on kits for the inmates, this time for those in the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland. Mark your calendars now to attend the UMW Annual Advent Retreat at the Newsoms UMC in Newsoms, Virginia. Our speaker for the day will be Rev. Mary Alice Colwell, our District Superintendent Rob Colwell's wife. We invite you to join us for a program of music and to enjoy a delicious lunch and worship time. NEXT MEETING - our next meeting will be November 20 th at 7PM in the Grundy Parlor. Our program will be around the World Thank Offering and the work that is done around the world for this very special offering. COME JOIN US - remember all women of the church are invited to be members of the UMW. Come join us and get involved in our many mission projects. Hope to see you November 20 th. 8 United Methodist Men The Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Men met October 17 th at the River's Bend Grill. We always meet the third Tuesday in each month and all men in the church are invited to attend. Our UMM continued the tradition of purchasing the Bibles for the eight year olds in our church and this year we have four - Ilyssa Snyder, Trace Sage, Will Strickler and Billy Talley. There was a formal presentation of the Bibles during the 10AM worship service on October 29 th. We continue to work on a number of manual labor projects such as: replacing the wood fencing around the air conditioning units with vinyl fencing and repairing damage to the wall in the men's bathroom in the church. Several projects have been completed. The Boy Scouts have requested to attend our November meeting to discuss how we can work together on projects such as their need for a larger storage area, cleanup, etc. We look forward to working with them. If you see something that needs to be done in and around the church, please don't hesitate to let a member of the UMM know. Please save this date for a UMM fundraiser: February 4, 2018 for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper at the church. We encourage you to invite your friends to our events. It is a great opportunity to introduce new people to our church. We would also like to encourage you to let us know if there are needs by some of our church members who aren't feeling well or are not physically able to do manual labor around their homes. The UMM are willing to help with lawn mowing, trimming shrubs, etc. Our next meeting will be November 21 st, 6:30 PM at the River's Bend Grill. All men of the church are invited to attend and participate in our projects. We enjoy a meal together, a devotional and lots of discussion on upcoming and new projects. Without a doubt, you will enjoy the fellowship. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Mark Strickler, President Senior Advocacy The Shepherd's Center of Chesterfield is a very useful organization for seniors, age 50 and greater. Their work is divided into three categories. 1. Adventures in Learning, which offers many topics from book discussions to Tai Chi Lessons. 2. Handyhands Services, which provides minor home repairs. 3. Transportation Service. This is the most active service. It helps with transportation service to doctor appointments and trips for groceries. October 2017 Continued Stewardship Success BHUMC, Stewardship Way to Go BHUMC, 10 months down, 10 months of Goal achieved and just 2 months remaining in 2017 help us finish strong for a 5 th consecutive year! Side Note If you made a giving pledge for 2017 (and we are doing a good job keep pace with those pledge goals) and you would like to see your results of actual compared to your pledge through 10/2017 let me know and I will be happy to share your 2017 progress with you, anonymously. 10 November Meetings & Small Groups UMYF meets on Sundays at 6:00pm in the Grundy Parlor. (UMYF will not meet on November 26). Volunteers are needed to help with the activities at the youth meetings and to provide dinner on Sundays at 6:00pm. The Keenagers met at noon on Wednesday, November 1st at the Chester Shoney s. Join us at noon on the first Wednesday of each month at a different local restaurant!
