2 PRAYER CONCERNS Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. PASTOR S REFLECTIONS I just heard about a little book that is a MUST read this summer! It s called The Why Café. Supposedly it s a short book a sort of fable, but not to be read too quickly. When a man ends up lost and finally finds a café in which to take refuge, he opens the menu to read: Why are you here? I was told the story leads the reader to ponder their purpose. Consider the contribution they alone were created to make. Wonder if their life is filled with the kinds of people who encourage them along the path. WOW! I haven t ordered it yet. But likely it ll be arriving before this article is before your eyes! It seems the perfect story for the month of June that lies ahead among the members and friends of Hillwood Presbyterian Church! Earlier this week the Renewal Team met to finalize their report for the June 3 potluck. They are eager to share with you what they discovered as they reviewed input from the last potluck along with last summer s Vital Signs report from the Church Assessment Tool, the gifts and interests revealed in the recent gifts survey, and the steps they have been making for potential ministries that will address needs of those beyond the church membership. If you can t be at the potluck on June 3, please be sure to talk to a member of the Renewal Team or look for follow up information after. The very next week Hillwood will host the Presbytery s Installation Commission at 3 p.m. on June 10. At first glance, it might seem a day that s all about me being installed as your designated pastor. But the day really is about ALL of us. Me, you, and the Holy Spirit s work in and among us all. I will re-make ordination vows in your presence to serve as faithfully as possible as your pastor. It was 21 years ago June 1 when I first made those vows, so the timing is extra meaningful to me. AND you will take vows too that ensure that we work to love and serve Christ together. Interestingly enough, June 10 will be nearly 21 years since this church last made such vows to a pastor (when Rev. Rouquie first arrived among you). My hope is that all of us will be deepened for faithful living through the adventures that lie ahead! A week and a half after that, we will have the opportunity to join with the members and friends of Hillsboro and Trinity Presbyterian Churches to welcome to Nashville a touring Youth Choir of 42 teens and adults. Several have made it known of your desires to partner with other churches in joint mission. June 21 will provide just that! Details are still in the works, but we know already that our hands will be needed with setting up and providing a meal. Our hearts will have a chance to open as together we work, eat, and get to know others. Our spirits will be able to be deeply moved by the musical concert presented that night. Mark the date now so that we all can enjoy this unique opportunity to partner with fellow Presbyterians even as we see the ministry of young Presbyterians coming to us from Burke Presbyterian Church in Virginia. Events will take place at Hillsboro Presbyterian, so carpools can be arranged as needed. As summer kicks into full swing in June, you can see there will be many chances to grow in God s Spirit as we worship and learn and serve. It certainly seems like the Spirit stirred up at Pentecost is alive and active today! Blessings for the month! Peace Pastor Jule

3 Highlander Announcements for June 2018 ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDY ON THE TRINITY: It s not too late to join in the DVD and discussion of The Shape of God: Deepening the Mystery of Trinity. Class meets in the Media Room at 9:30 a.m. Sundays. POTLUCK LUNCH SUNDAY 3 JUNE: Make plans to attend the Potluck Lunch in the parlor after worship on 3 June. The Renewal Team is hosting and will bring updates on next steps in ministry direction and renewal. Bring a potluck item to share! HILLWOOD PRESBYTERIAN WALKING GROUP: Two Tuesday nights a month, members and friends meet to walk the neighborhood or nearby trail. Next dates are: 5 and 12 June at 6 p.m. On 5 June: meet at the home of Keith and Martha Garman to enjoy their rose gardens, fellowship together, and walk (as you are able). NOTE THESE SUMMER DATES: Sunday, 10 June: Pastor Jule s Installation Service is Sunday, 10 June at 3 p.m. A reception in the parlor will follow the service. Thursday, 21 June: Hillwood is joining Hillsboro and Trinity Presbyterian Churches in hosting a meal and concert for a touring Youth Choir from Burke PC in Virginia. Details to follow. Make plans to help with the meal and attend the concert! All held at Hillsboro PCUSA south of the intersection of Hillsboro and Tyne Roads. Sunday, 15 July: An afternoon of exploring creativity at Art and Soul. Join members and friends of HPC for an afternoon workshop of doing art as a way to renew your spirit. No experience necessary just a desire to try out ways of tapping into your creativity. For $25 a person, the group will be led at Art and Soul by Director Jenni Sturgis. Registration & fee due in advance. Lunch at a local restaurant likely will be added to the afternoon. Contact Jennifer Stootsberry or Pastor Jule with questions or to sign up.

4 Highlights of May 20, 2018 Stated Meeting of the Session -The Finance Committee joined the session to hear the audit report this month. Thank you to Finance Committee members: Beebe Bryant, Tom Diehl, Kathy Osten, and Cindy Wedel for their dedication to HPC. A special thank you to Kathy Osten for the endless hours she volunteers as our treasurer. -Dale Eckler of Eckler Consulting, LLC presented the Stewardship Audit report. Dale completed a very detailed examination of all 2017 financial transactions. He made us aware of our accounting strengths and areas for growth. Auditing standards developed specifically for churches and charitable organizations were utilized. These standards are designed to assess the overall cash management process to determine if the funds received and the persons who handle these funds are adequately protected. The audit made us aware of our accounting strengths and areas for growth. The Finance Team will review recommendations and make a plan regarding updated procedures. With questions, contact Tom Diehl, Finance Committee Moderator. -Approval was given to the Trustees to have online giving set up through the Presbyterian Foundation partnership with Vanco Payment Solutions. -Leaks in the Sanctuary (east wall) are causing the paint to peel. Order of repair work: obtain quotes for repair of exterior brick, additional information needed on repair of gutter/copper conductor boxes, and obtain quotes for interior wall repair & painting. -Renewal Team News: 3 June Potluck in Parlor following worship with workshop on HPC ministries & missions. -Pastor Jule s installation service will be on Sunday, 10 June at 3 p.m. Reception following in the church parlor. Please contact Jennifer Stootsberry with any questions. -21 June Hillwood will work together with Hillsboro & Trinity to host the Youth Singing Group from Burke Presbyterian Church in VA. Our help is needed with set up, meal preparation, clean up, and concert attendance at Hillsboro PC. More information to follow. -HPC Trustees work is focused on setting up on-line giving, stock donations, planned giving, a property maintenance schedule, and a master facility plan. -Our choir will be on break for June, July, and August. There will be special music 1-2 Sundays per month and we will have a hymn sing in July. -The session has moved the August stated session meeting to 12 August. 5 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN ALL WOMEN OF OUR CHURCH SAVE THE DATE TUESDAY AUGUST 28 TH The Presbyterian women of our church will have our annual Birthday Lunch and Summer Picnic. This year we are planning on having guests from the Mending Hearts Mission to tell us more about their work and the needs they have that we might be able to help fulfill. The Circle will be meeting on the second Tuesday of each month (September May) at 10:00 am. For security reasons, Playcare is NOT able give access through the downstairs entrance. SUNDAY MORNINGS: If you arrive after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, please enter at the Sanctuary main door. Press the bell, which will flash as a light in the narthex to alert an usher that you need entrance. Thank you for helping to keep our facility safe for all ages on Sunday mornings!
