We will have a birthday celebration for IMARA s 5 th Anniversary during the brunch. There will be no Sunday School. Also, DPW will have a final day of Bazaar sales. Holiday Gifts Christmas Room Silent Auction Café Vintage Treasures Jewelry Bake Sale Used Books Gently Used Household Goods, Toys, and Sporting Goods The money that is raised from the Bazaar goes towards various DPW missions, as well as the needs of our church, youth, and the women s programs. Come join in the Bazaar fun! The Silent Auction is now live and on-line at Many items have a buy-it-now opportunity, so don t wait long to get in on the fun! We will be continuing to add items and updating the list right up until Bazaar day. At noon on Friday, November 3, the on-line auction will end and bidding will pick up where it left off the next day as a live auction at the Bazaar. Please share this link with friends and let baseball fans know that our own (and ESPN s top baseball expert) Tim Kurkjian is contributing an evening in his home for 5 to enjoy dinner and to talk baseball to their heart s content. Please also continue to consider what you might be able to donate to this effort a special skill, a vacation home, or some tickets to an event. Ask your service providers and favorite restaurants for their donations too! Note: NO clothing donations this year. Items should be delivered to the church on Wednesday, November 1 from 6-7:30 pm; Thursday, November 2 from 9:30 am-6 pm, but only 9:30 am till noon on Friday, November 3. Donate home-made sweet and savory items such as cookies, pies, small cakes, muffins, brownies, raised bread, rolls, etc. These items should be delivered on Friday, November 3, or early on Saturday morning. Items should be packaged and ready to sell when delivered; please indicate whether there are nuts in the items. We are unable to accept items that need to be refrigerated. Contact any DPW board member or see the weekly bulletin to volunteer the week of, and/or the day of the Bazaar. We need help setting up, working the day of the Bazaar, and with break down and clean up. Men, women, and teens can help with this. It will take many hands to make the 2017 DPW Bazaar a success. Your help is both needed and appreciated!

2 Page 2 GOOD TIDINGS... From the Pastor: In the past few months, several people have asked me: Q. How long will you stay? A. As long as it takes. In our planning meeting, the session set out a timeline with some dates that indicate a period of about 2 years before a new pastor is installed. These dates, however, are not written in stone sometimes things happen faster than we anticipate and sometimes more slowly. My commitment to you to the session, the congregation, and the presbytery is to stay here and lead you through this interim process whether it takes 2 years or much longer. I see three major parts of the interim project, and they are all related and overlap each other: Mission Clarification, BEAR Project, and Staff Model Discernment. 1. We need to complete a thorough mission study that takes into account the unique gifts of this congregation and the needs of the community around us. A mission study helps us discern a general direction for the future not all the details for a 10-year plan, but enough to know what skills, competencies, and characteristics you will need in your next installed pastor. 2. Resolving the BEAR project is central to laying the groundwork for a successful pastoral relationship with the next installed pastor. A second capital campaign and building project requires the pastor to lead people through difficult decisions, to take some stands that may be unpopular, and serve as the lightning rod in the storms of change. For an installed pastor to have that on her or his plate first thing could be a baptism by fire. Having the BEAR project completed in a financially sustainable way will increase the chance that a new pastor can hit the ground running in a united and energized congregation. 3. Deciding how to staff for the future will grow out of the mission clarification process. Whether we need two full-time clergy, or a Director of Christian Education, or a part-time Parish Associate for pastoral care, or a Youth Director, or a Program Coordinator, or some combination of those will become clear as we complete the mission study and move forward. Throughout our time together, I am committed to continuing to strengthen those parts of our life together that give us sustenance for the journey divine worship, service to others, caring for one another, learning and fellowship. Q. What happens if we complete all the interim tasks, but it takes longer than we anticipate for the Pastoral Search Committee to find our next pastor? A. Then you re stuck with me for a while. I don t have a deadline, I am here until the search committee completes their work. 3 V OLUME 25, I SSUE 10 Page Stewardship Pledge Campaign Kicks Off DPW Update Our Darnestown Presbyterian Church 2018 Stewardship Pledge Campaign kicks off this month under the theme of Forging Our Future. Pledge cards, along with a privacy envelope to make your 2018 pledge, will be mailed to you the first week of November. We will collect pledges on Dedication Sunday, November 19. You can bring in your pledge card (in the envelope) for a special dedication during the 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. service on the 19 th. If you will be away or not attending services on November 19, you can mail your pledge into the office or put it in the offering on any Sunday in November or early December. We recognize that we are in the middle of a transition period at Darnestown Presbyterian and that you may have pause about making a pledge at this time, but we would encourage you by writing that now is the perfect time to stand up and claim your priorities. Now is the time to say, this is my church family and it is an ultimate priority. It is where I receive my spiritual nourishment. It is the place that challenges me to live beyond the voice of culture to the richer life of faith. After prayerful consideration, please take the time to fill out your card and return your pledge on Sunday, November 19. We will have a light luncheon followed by a Cookie Exchange, then the business meeting. All women of the church are invited! Mary Lydia Circle Our Circle has started with the Bible study leadership once again in the capable hands of Ruth Sweet. We are using the Horizons study: Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews. The gathering is usually on the 1st Thursday of each month in the Parlor at 10 am, but the next meeting is November 16 because of the Bazaar. Please remember to check the resource in your Horizons magazine each month for the lesson. Volunteers needed for the Junior Church program during the late service We are in need of volunteers to help with the Junior Church program during the 11:00 service every Sunday. This is an invitation to ALL church members, not only parents of children participating in this program. 4 Page 4 GOOD TIDINGS... Help Needed!. On Sunday, November 5, we will go to the Germantown HELP Food Pantry at 1:00 p.m. to package food boxes for needy families. We will meet at the Germantown Methodist Church if you can help, please contact Rob Garretson (rgarretson@gmail.com). Volunteers are needed! Youth and adults are welcome to join us (students can earn community service hours at the Pantry). Daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 5. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour. Holiday Basket Program Youth at DPC As you start your holiday season planning, please consider supporting this program that DPC participates in sponsored by Germantown HELP. Of the hundreds of families sponsored under this holiday program, DPC families have hosted area families with food for a holiday meal at Thanksgiving, and/or another meal in December (Christmas) plus gifts for the children. You may sign up for one or both holidays. Family assignments, and complete instructions for shopping and delivery, will be made in November. DPW Annual Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 4 make plans to attend with your family or friends. Come join this joyous day with all your church family! Annual Youth-Led Service (11:00 am) will be held November 19. 5 BEAR Update October, 2017 At its planning meeting in September, Session set a target date for commencement of the campus construction of June 1, The church received an additional pledge that puts the project within reach, but important and difficult work remains to be completed. The permit process for the construction is nearly complete. The BEAR Team met with the builder and architect last week, and talked through remaining details. The builder will seek firm bids from subcontractors about April 1, in order to ensure reliable bids for a June 1 start. Market uncertainties make it almost impossible to obtain reliable bids more than 60 days out from a construction start. Meanwhile, the BEAR team and Session have set forth a list of tasks to be completed and are working on assigning responsibility and oversight. These include, among others, securing a long term lease with Georgetown Hill and planning for the accomplishment of our mission and ministries during the time of construction. In addition, the Stewardship Committee and the BEAR team are working on a new ten year financial projection that will be the basis for further discussions with the Congregation and the Presbytery regarding financing the project. Session is planning a second capital campaign for after the first of the year, and is also planning a process to clarify our mission and ministry priorities which you will learn more about in the coming weeks. The results of this work will further inform both the ten year financial plan, and the use of our new, flexible space. Over the summer, the BEAR architects completed two new artistic renderings of the space which you can view below, on the BEAR Blog and on the BEAR bulletin board outside the bathrooms in the Andrew Small Building. One view is inside the sanctuary and the other is outside looking toward the new gathering area. We are excited about these views because it can be hard to understand construction simply through floor plans. Session and the BEAR team will be working together to bring more details to the Congregation on all of the above in the coming weeks. We understand that this project has taken a long time, and that many details have been forgotten. As the project is so much closer to reality now, we want to take more time to bring everyone back up to speed and get all questions answered. You will hear more about this very soon.
