CENTENNIEL 2015 When I was growing up I returned to school each September and my teachers would ask What did you do this summer? What did you learn? Then we would usually write a paragraph or two about what we learned. In the beginning of the summer when I was 10 years old, I decided to assign myself research projects to do, biographies to read, art projects to create so I could have more things to report back. I know I was a strange kid. But mostly I just loved learning and sharing with others so I could learn from them and share what I was learning too. Henry Ford once said, Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. We are all learning or at least we all have the opportunity to keep learning. Paul says, I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances when he writes to the Philippians (Philippians 4:12). United Methodists are people who learn, grow in grace, who take the time to reflect and respond to the grace of God and grow deeper. How are we learning? What is God teaching us? When early Methodists gathered together they would ask one another How is it with your soul? When we come to worship and meet in small groups we have the opportunity to ask ourselves and one another- How is our soul? How are we growing? Where are we seeing God? What are we learning? Continued on the next page

Continued from the previous page My chaplain in college once said to me, In Christianity, we re all in first grade. He wasn t saying we don t grow in our faith, rather what he was saying is that we never stop growing. Faith is never a destination to attain. We never arrive but we keep striving. In speaking about how we all keep learning and growing in our discipleship, Paul says, But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. (1 Corinthians 12:31) As disciples we are always pupils and Jesus is our master. Too often life passes us by without taking the time to reflect on what we ve learned. Faith is built through Scripture, Tradition, Reason, and Experience and we grow in that faith when we stop and reflect on how God is teaching us and how we are learning. During the month of August, our sermon series will take the time to reflect on what God has taught us this summer. I hope to see you and reflect on learning together! This Sunday our sermon is focused on Making New Friends! Do you remember when you were a child and all you needed to do to make a new friend was introduce yourself? I am amazed watching my children make new friends wherever we go! What have you learned this summer? I hope you to hear from you! The bulletin board in the church stairwell will be a place where we can share together what we ve learned and are learning this summer! God is never done teaching us and I thank God that we are never done growing in grace and learning as disciples! In God s Love, Pastor Beth Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015

Group Re-Frame Mission Trip Manassas, Va Thank you to Laurel Sage, Chris Knaggs and all of our Youth (Allison Beaudoin, Dylan Craddock, Christiana Hodges, Kyle Dascoulias) who went on the Youth Mission Trip to Manassas July Thank you to the UMM, UMW and everyone who supported the Youth Mission Trip! During the Group Re Frame Mission Trip our youth worked with many different projects and met new friends from around the country to share the love of God! This mission trip became a transforming experience for all who participated and for those they served! Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015

Love Does Mission Trip Chester, VA Thank you to all who helped during our Love Does Mission Project July 21-23! We had an amazing time loving and serving God because of your help! Many thanks to Laurel Sage, Kelly Manor, Lisa Crowder, Pam Winn, Frank Shier, Ann McNinch, Doris Linkous, Amie-Anne Talley, Stacy Woodell, and to the UMW and UMM for delicious meals. On Tuesday and Thursday we offered Vacation Bible School to over 40 children in the Greenleigh community. Wednesday we cleaned the kitchen and nursery at church. We had lots of fun doing mission as well as bowling, having a photo scavenger hunt, swimming at Hadad s lake, eating Krispy Kreme donuts, and so much more! 6 Children and Youth Ministry United Methodist Youth Fellowship July was such an amazing month for our youth. The Manassas, Virginia mission trip was a life changer for the six of us who attended. I want to thank YOU, the Church, for making this possible. Without all the prayers, donations, and volunteers, at our events we would not have been able to go. A special thank you to Chris Knaggs, our male chaperone, his faith and grace shined throughout the entire week! I was also privileged to help Pastor Beth with our local Love Does mission trip. We had a total of 10 youth and several adult volunteers! With over 40 children eager to learn more about us and God, you can imagine the chaos that could have happened. It was inspiring to watch our youth step up to the plate and be leaders, never giving up even when it was overwhelming. We will be gearing up for our huge fall Kick-Off on September 20th! Come, bring some food to share, and get to know these amazing youth like I have. We will have videos and pictures from both mission trips and other events from Children s Ministry Thank you to all the volunteers that have been helping keep children's church going throughout the summer. This has been such a blessing for the children, and their parents! I love hearing the kids talk about it afterwards, they are so grateful that someone is spending time with them and teaching at their level, when the alternative would be having to sit still for an hour and listen to "big people words". We still need some volunteers for August, so if you haven't had the chance to spend time with this great group of children, come try it out! Laurel Sage, Director of Children and Youth Ministry Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015

Barbara Rutherford Dear BHUMC Family, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all those who planned and attended my farewell reception in June. It was so thoughtful of all of you to think of me. There are no words to express how much your friendship has meant to me the past five years. It has been an honor to be a part of this faith community. I pray that God continues to bless this amazing congregation. Peace, Barbara Rutherford Barbara poses with the choir at the reception held in her honor on June 14, 2015: (l-r) Stuart Morefield, Stan Forbes, Tina Morris, Frank Linkous, Tracy Craddock, Barbara Rutherford, Charles Woodard, Helen Collie, Liz McDonough, Kailey Craddock, Erin Gwinn & Doris Morefield. WORK SESSIONS: The Crafty Ladies are busy working on craft projects for the Craft Show scheduled for Friday, November 20th from 5PM to 8PM and Saturday, November 21st from 9AM to 2PM in the Fellowship Hall. At the last Craft Show, the largest crowd was on Friday evening so we have extended our open hours to allow for more time as the early shoppers really wanted to get first choice of the items presented for sale. Remember all proceeds from the Craft Show go to help those in need in our church community and for special mission projects of the church including buying gifts for 10 children in our Christmas families. For the last two years, we have been able to give scholarships to our graduating high school seniors. So mark your calendars now for this event and get a lot of Christmas shopping completed knowing that you are reaching out to help others. In the month of August, we will be meeting each Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall from 10AM to 2PM. Please join us and bring a brown bag lunch. If you have a project you are already working on, bring it along and continue to work during the session. We look forward to seeing crafters and having a fun time of fellowship together. Any questions, please contact Betty Forbes at bettyforbes@comcast.net or call Crafty Ladies work sessions for August: August 5, 12, 19 & 26 from 10am to 2pm (Fellowship Hall) Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015

Stewardship In last month s newsletter we posted - Congratulations! You are a kind, giving, generous and blessed congregation. Through the month of May; not only has our Church touched countless lives and shared The Word with many.but, we also achieved success through our tithes and offerings in May by paying our Apportionments for the month YES, WAY TO GO! Well you should be proud in the fact that we are repeating this message, as June was ALSO a success in funding the budget and apportionment responsibilities so we repeat, CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU. If we look back one month further, to April, we were all challenged to give more and with consistency, which we answered by doing so in May. That effort slipped a bit in June, although contributing to the apportionments for June our overall giving was down for the month. No cause for concern though, summer is a busy time and it can be demanding to keep regular consistency of attendance and giving during these months. But again, this is normal and our church is a successful one that will succeed again this year as we have proven to do in the recent history with our funding of apportionments in 2013 and 2014, as well as over the very successful and generous 60 year life of BHUMC. We will succeed again in Below is a snap shot of our year to date success and progress toward successful achievement of our annual goal. We need everyone s help to stay the course We can and will do it again this year. Thank you to all and in God s Grace, Your stewardship committee, Dave Steinbraker, Dorothy Mooney, Ann McNinch, Charles Woodard and Bill Talley V Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015

United Methodist Women The United Methodist Women will not have a meeting in June, July and August and will resume our meetings in September with a covered dish supper in the Fellowship Hall on September 21st at 6:30PM. The entire church is invited to attend as we will have a speaker from CCHASM to tell us about their work and particularly about their efforts during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to support families. The UMW members will be providing the delicious dinner. Our next yard sale is scheduled for September 26th from 8AM - 12noon. Start saving your precious "stuff" that you would like to pass along to others. All of the funds raised at our yard sales go for mission projects. Many of the United Methodist Women belong to the Crafty Ladies group and are already working on the Craft Show scheduled for Friday, November 20th - 5 to 8PM and Saturday, November 21st - 9AM - 2PM. The schedule for work sessions will be published in the weekly Sunday bulletin so people can participate in making the crafts. UMW Members: Please remember to select books from the UMW library to read over the summer for the UMW Reading Program. There are many books that you will enjoy reading and they will help you learn more about the issues that affect women, children and youth in our country as well as internationally. Have a safe and happy summer and we'll see you in church! -Doris Morefield, UMW President Just Coffee We have been enjoying "Love Does: Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World" study, and will continue it through August 9th. In mid-august we will return mid-old Testament to "The Story," an innovative version of the Bible that presents Scripture as a continuous, understandable narrative in chronological order. You will not want to miss this meaningful journey through the Bible!! Join us in the Fellowship Hall during Sunday School (9:45-10:45am) and visit our blog to stay updated on our studies: Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church August 2015
