5 An ounce of prevention (from our Health & Wellness Committee) We know the old adage. When it comes to our health, prevention is a proven method for preserving health and preventing disease and complications. But is all screening created equal? In fact some screening, because it detects abnormalities where there are none, can lead to unnecessary, expensive, and often painful procedures. Your primary care provider can help you decide which screening tests are indicated for you based on research. Advertisements for some screenings are misleading and will cause people to undergo unnecessary testing. Here is a short list of some currently recommended preventive services: Regular measurement of weight and blood pressure Immunizations for both children and adults Advice on diet, exercise, tobacco, alcohol and drug use Managing stress and preventing accident injury Special tests at certain times in your life such as with pregnancy and beginning at age 50 Remember the scientific evidence can lead to changes in recommendations. For example, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) no longer recommends routine PSA screening for men. PSA screening should be done based on a conversation with your provider at which time you can discuss your specific risk for prostate cancer. Most health insurance plans pay for preventive services, including Medicare, but the specific tests may vary according to the plan and your history, including specific risk factors. There are choices you can make right now and every day which can lead to better health, including: Avoid any form of tobacco use Eat a healthy diet Exercise regularly Drink alcohol only in moderation Don t use illegal drugs or prescriptions belonging to someone else Always wear seat belts And most important of all: Nurture your family and friends and strangers alike Pray constantly as St. Paul tells us Scientific research has shown that regular prayer and church attendance lead to spiritual wellness and more positive health outcomes.

6 WORD OF LIFE: Ho rmon a l contraceptives significantly increase women s risk of developing the following: blood clots that can lead to fatal heart attacks, strokes and pulmonary embolisms; breast cancer, cervical cancer and liver tumors; loss of bone density; and changes in metabolism causing loss of libido, weight gain, moodiness and migraines. Women using the contraceptive patch, for example, are almost 8 times more likely to develop blood clots than wo me n n o t u sin g h o rmo n a l contraceptives; more than 360 young women using the patch, contraceptive ring or Yaz/Yasmin pills have died in recent years due to heart attacks, stro ke s o r p u lmo n a ry embolisms seen as associated with these drugs and devices. ~ Susan E. Wills, JD, LLM, Life Matters: Contraceptives and Women s Well-Being, Respect Life Program 2012 Year of Faith - Diocese Beginning this October and continuing through November of 2013, the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has established a Year of Faith and is inviting us to spend time in consideration of our own journey of faith and our relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. At the heart of this Year of Faith is an encounter with the one God, who is love. We are called to rediscover the joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ, for he is the source of all beauty, truth, and goodness. Let us rediscover, or explore for the first time, the Church He founded and what she believes. Over the next year in the Diocese of Madison, all Catholics will have the opportunity to reflect on the Year of Faith through prayer, study of the Second Vatican Council, and study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Look for events offered though the diocese and tools and inspiration to work for the New Evangelization through the gift of beauty. The Year of Faith begins in the Diocese of Madison on October 11, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service with Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, at St. Maria Goretti Parish Church, Madison. The bishop is asking for each parish to send representatives to this event. If you are interested in attending, please contact Fr. Jim for more details.

7 Year of Faith - St. Mary Parish Pope Benedict has declared a Year of Faith beginning on October 11, 2012, which is the 50 th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and the 20 Anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During this year, Catholics throughout the world are invited and encouraged to participate in programs that will deepen their understanding of the faith and their spirituality. Two recently developed programs that have been very popular in Catholic parishes is a program by Jeff Cavins called Bible Timeline, and a program by Robert Barron called Catholicism. The Bible Timeline program provides an overview of the Bible from beginning to end, and gives the participant an excellent grasp of the events of the bible and how they relate to our lives. The Catholicism program provides an overview of the main beliefs of our Catholic faith, and gives the participant a deeper grasp of the teachings of the Catholic Church and how they relate to our lives. Both are DVD programs, which engage the participant by means of reading, reflection, discussion, and viewing the DVDs. Each program consists of a series of 22 or 24 sessions of one hour to one and half hours in length. In order to get the most out of the program, each participant needs access to a workbook or study kit, which provides background material, reading suggestions, and reflection/ discussion questions. The workbook (for the Catholicism program) and study kit (for the Bible Timeline program) cost $ These can be shared by spouses or persons within the same household. If there is sufficient interest in our parish, we will purchase one or both of these programs, and begin them this fall. To assist us in assessing interest, please complete the form below and put it in the collection basket next weekend. Thanks! Name: Phone Number: I am interested in: Bible Timeline Catholicism For me, the best time for meeting is: morning afternoon evening For me, the best day of the week is: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Barry Brown first n o t i c e d a problem with his heart in Barry has been a fitness instructor for most of his a d u l t l i f e, including 20 years in the Air Force, but he started getting exhausted when he exercised, and feeling a strange stinging sensation across his back. It turned out that he'd had a heart attack and suffered significant heart damage. He enrolled in a clinical trial at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, where he got a dose of his own bone marrow adult stem cells as part of the treatment for his severe heart disease. Three years later, Barry ran and completed a half-marathon--13 grueling miles to show he was back in fighting shape. His comeback amazed even his doctor. As Barry says, his own recovery and all the other stories out there "are proof that adult stem cell research isn't a waste of money." And, it doesn't require destroying human life as is necessary with embryonic stem cell research. See Barry's uplifting video story and those of other adult stem cell patients at StemCellResearchFacts.org.
