3 From your Pastor: During the work week we have several opportunities for studying God s word together. Find some time in your week to join us Starting again in September B.Y.O.L. & B (Bring Your Own Lunch & Bible) Wednesdays at Noon in the Conference Room. Come and enjoy an enriched bible study, fellowship, and gathering over lunch. Adult Prayer & Bible Study in the Fellowship Hall Wednesdays 6:45-8:00 p.m. Make your reservation for dinner and bring your Bible. The learning time begins on Wednesday, September 7 th. This will be a great kick-off for the new year as we all return to our Fall fun. Betty Emphasis on the Alma Hunt Offering is September 11th - 18th Envelopes & flyers are available on tables throughout the church WOMAN S MISSIONARY UNION September is time for the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions Offering Goal for Virginia is $1,167,500 Envelopes & flyers are available on tables throughout the church. WMUV named our state missions offering after Alma Hunt because she was a giant in Christian missions and specifically in the work of the Woman's Missionary Union. She manifested a spirit of humbleness and cooperation for the greater good of God's kingdom. Her life was a mirror of her love of Jesus and her desire was that ALL would know him. Miss Alma is a legacy of a genuine and sincere call to missions. In the spirit of Christ and in the legacy of our past together let's continue to make it count. The Alma Hunt Offering made it possible for us to respond to Virginia Tornado victims of which the work continues today. Your gifts make it count for new churches, for Virginia Venturer (missionaries) to go, for leadership development for women and girls, for mental health education for our churches and more. The Alma Hunt Offering allows us to be the church facing the realities of today's world. Watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times! Don't live carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants. (Ephesians 5:5-17, The Message) And TOGETHER we will make it count! Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions Alma Hunt ( ) was a spunky little lady who was always ready to speak and be involved in worldwide and athome missions. She especially loved seeing and working with girls in action and teenage girls. Since 1976, the Alma Hunt Offering has been a joint venture of Woman s Missionary Union of Va. (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Va. (BGAV). Be sure to pick up a brochure and read the stories of real people and real ministries that are recipients of the Alma Hunt offering. Every dollar you give goes directly to support these and many other ministries. Whether it is across the street or around the world, we lift up the name of Jesus in word and deed together. THANK YOU for all the school supplies given in August. Coming in October: "TOY DRIVE" for the Christmas Store to be held on December 10th for residents of Hampton. Be on the Look Out for the WMU Christmas Corner Coming in October. Women on Mission Groups (circles) will give to the Community Assistance Ministry (HELP) in September. In October the women will remember the Peninsula READS and/or local Firemen and Policemen. Thank you for being so generous! Marian Supplee

6 S.A.M.E. Thanks to the willingness of many volunteers, SAME has been busy all summer handing out bag lunches and offering a cool room for people to get out of the heat each Monday (except for July 4 th ). Along with many of the regular SAME staff, we have had HBC and Costal Community Church members, youth groups and grandkids, a music fraternity from Hampton University, students from Phenix School in Hampton, a group from Wells Fargo Mortgage, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts..all volunteering to make our Summer Bag Lunch program possible. With 2 weeks to go, we have given away over 664 bag lunches to our neighbors in need. This summer we also partnered with our WMU and the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank to host a Mobile Food Pantry where up to 100 of our neighbors in need received much needed groceries. On September 12 th, from 4 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., SAME will be sponsoring another MFP (contact Amy [ ] if you would like to help). We begin our full hot lunch program on September 12 th. New information about Signups is listed below. As we continue to get to know our neighbors, we are looking into new ways that we can grow our community of love and friendship (i.e.. shower ministry, laundry ministry, haircuts, bible study, book exchange, etc.). If you have been wanting to get involved with SAME, but have been unsure how or where to volunteer your services, please come to an All-Volunteer Meeting on Wednesday, September 7 th, 10:00 a.m. in the Activity Room next to the kitchen. 8 Just a little more of Miss Mary Musings Summer ends, and autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night, and thus he would never know the rhythms that are on the heart of life. ~ Hal Borland Autumn is the perfect time to take account of what we've done, what we didn't do, and what we'd like to do next year. ~ Author Unknown I can smell autumn dancing in the breeze, The sweet chill of pumpkin and crisp sunburnt leaves. ~ Ann Drake, In autumn, don't go to the jewelers to see gold; go to the parks.! ~ Mehmet Mwrat ildan Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees. ~ Faith Baldwin O' Pumpkin pie, your time has come 'round again and I am Autumnrifically happy! ~ Terri Guillemets Virginia American Choral Directors Association invites you to an evening of sacred song and learning I've Heard That Before Hymns and Songs that Inspired Our Favorite Anthems Friday, September 30, 7:30 p.m., Freemason Street Baptist Church 400 East Freemason Street, Norfolk Free and Open to All Presented by CJ Redden-Liotta Music Minister, Vienna Baptist Church & Music in Worship Repertoire and Resources Chair, Virginia ACDA This is also the premiere of Freemason Street s self-published hymnal. The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada is an ecumenical, non-profit organization devoted to congregational song. We believe that the holy act of singing together shapes faith, heals brokenness, transforms lives, and renews peace. Our mission, therefore, is to encourage, promote, and enliven congregational song. Grandparent s Day is September 11th Finding Her There (from Chicken Soup for the Mother s Soul by Christina Keeman) Every year my birthday followed the same ritual. My mother would come to see me, on that late fall day, and I would open the door. She would be standing on the step with wind swirling leaves around her feet. There would be a chill in the air, and in her hands she would hold my birthday gift. It would always be something small and precious, something I had needed for a long time and just never knew it. I would open this gift from my mother with great care, then I would tuck it carefully away with all my heart s possessions. How fragile these gifts were, from my mother s hands. If my mother could come to me today on my birthday, I would bring her into the warmth of my kitchen. Then we would have a cup of tea, and watch the turning leaves press themselves against the windows. There would be no rush to open my gift, because today I would know that I had already opened it when I opened the front door to find her there, with the wind swirling leaves around her feet. Mary Copeland
9 Oral Histories for HBC 225 th Anniversary In anticipation of our 225th anniversary in November, HBC in cooperation with the Hampton History Museum, will begin taking recorded oral histories every Friday afternoon from noon to 4 pm in the church office suite. We hope to interview as many of HBC's longtime members as possible; in cases of infirmity or disability, it may be possible to conduct interviews off site, but that may have an effect on audio quality. We hope to get brief interviews with adults, teens, current members, former members - you name it. In addition to being made available to HBC, the digital recordings will be archived on the museum's website and will help future generations understand how HBC observed and participated in the recent history of Hampton and its environs. If you know of someone whom you think should be interviewed; if you would be willing to be interviewed yourself; or if you would like to volunteer to collect oral histories, please contact me at Lisa.garber@cox.net or leave a message at This is going to be so much fun! Lisa Garber Register now for the 2016 CBF Virginia General Assembly With special guests: Gennady & Mina Podgaisky, CBF Field Personnel Matt Cook, CBF Immediate Past Moderator Ryan Clark, CBF Global Missions Church Engagement Manager Jennifer Hawks, Associate General Counsel at the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty September 23, a.m. - 5 p.m. Hampton Baptist Church Hampton, Virginia Sunday, September 11th Happy Grandparent's Day Grandparents come in many shapes and sizes. They are either our Mom's or Dad's parents. Sometimes unrelated folks. We love them all; they help us & take us places. They spoil us, and are our very special friends. They love us unconditionally. Autumn - As summer draws its final breath to prepare its curtain call, the monarchs begin their epic trek to usher in the fall. The northern wind breathes out its chill as songs begin to hush, and paints the trees upon the hill with its artist's brush. From green to red, orange and brown the trees discard their masks, and lay them gently upon the ground for us to begin our tasks. Autumn makes way for winter's reign. We bid farewell old friend. Till summer's warmth begins to wane and fall returns again. By
