5 ST. MARK S LUTHERAN SCHOOL NOTES Mrs. Kayla Arndt will lead us in chapel on Wednesday, November 14. Our offering for the next few chapel services will be designated to the LCMS Military for the Armed Forces. Everyone is invited to attend our weekly chapel service that begins around 8:25 am at the church weather permitting. There will be no school on Monday, November 12th in observance of Veteran's Day. School will resume on Tuesday, November 13th. St. Mark s is holding their annual food drive the week of Tuesday, November 13 through Friday, November 16 (there is no school on Monday, November 12 in observance of Veteran s Day). All items will be donated to the Steeleville Food Pantry located at Peace Lutheran Church to help area families. Some suggested items are: jelly, jam, peanut butter, (no glass containers), sugar, canned fruit, baby food, canned tuna, canned chicken, stew, chili, pancake mix, shampoo, soap toothpaste, toothbrushes and paper products. Please bring your items to school and place them in the boxes inside the main door. On Friday we will take what all of our students have collected to the pantry! This is just a small way the children at St. Marks can help those in need. Wednesday, November 14th is World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. WDD became an official United Nations Day in 2006 and is marked every year on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who codiscovered insulin in The color blue is the global color for diabetes awareness. Everyone is asked to wear blue that day to help support those who battle Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. 5

6 Illinois State Family Reading Night is Thursday, November 15th. As in the past members of the Steeleville Library Board will be visiting St. Mark s and reading to Pre-K through 4th grade to celebrate Family Reading Night! The Steeleville Library Board will also be purchasing $20 worth of books for each of these classrooms in honor of this event! So, leave the television and computers off on Thursday, November 15, and take time to read a good book to your kids or yourself! The End of Year Giving Campaign for COS has started. If you have already sent in your gift, thank you! If you have not yet had an opportunity, you can do so in whatever form of giving you feel most comfortable, whether that be a mailed check or online via our website or Facebook. The campaign will end on #GivingTuesday, November 27, which is an international day of online giving. Shadow Days: Parents of eighth graders and potential transfer students are encouraged to call and make arrangements for their student to spend a day at Christ Our Savior shadowing a COS student and learning more about the COS advantage. Calling Thrivent Members: If you are a member of Thrivent and are willing to help COS at no cost to you, please consider organizing or participating in a Thrivent Action Team. Each Thrivent member is eligible to lead two project teams per year. Every project team is given up to $250 along with organizational materials to help make their project successful. 8 THANK YOU!!! I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you who gave of your weekend to help with Wurstmart. I am so proud to be part of this group of people who can come together and accomplish so much in one day! Everyone knows what needs to be done and does it without being instructed. You all certainly did not NEED a chairperson, but I am honored to have had the privilege! Sandy Fortner, Misty Smith and Ruth Waeltz, I couldn t have done it without you! I learned so much. I have never cooked that much turkey if you combine all the years I ve been cooking turkey! A HUGE thank you to Nathan Harding and Andy Gerlach for taking charge of the food in the kitchen and Jason Vallett for taking care of the sausage frying. Thank you to Maggie Buch and Chrissy Lindenberg for knowing and doing whatever needed done Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to our basketball team and coaches who set up all the tables in the gym after practice on Friday. Thank you to all the ladies who sliced apples, those who decorated the gym (which looked fabulous!), sliced and served desserts, drinks, sold tickets, filled carryouts, sold bacon and sausage, set up, cleaned up, put up signs, picked up the truck, washed dishes, worked the Country Store, donated items, baked desserts or just came to eat! Each and every one of you helped make this year s Wurstmart fun and successful. We had a wonderful turnout and I am so proud to be a member of this congregation. Alinda Jeffers 8

9 MISSION TRIP OPPORTUNITY Immanuel in Murphysboro is coordinating a mission/work trip to help Hurricane Michael victims in the Panama City area the week after Thanksgiving. Our group will be assisting with tree and limb cleanup. We will leave on Saturday, November 24 and return on Sunday, December 2. If you would like to be a part of this mission of love, please contact the Immanuel Lutheran Church office for details and to secure your spot Fall Food Drive The Board of Stewardship has begun their Fall Food Drive for Steeleville Community Food Pantry. They have placed boxes at each door to collect the non-perishable foods and other household necessities you donate. Last year we were able to collect a great deal of items for our neighbors in need. Can we exceed last year s collection? ANGEL TREE REMINDER The Angel Tree is up in the Fellowship Room with several Angel tags hanging on it by now. You can choose to take either an ornament, (if you want to participate but only want to purchase a single gift ~ you can purchase what is suggested on the ornament tag or buy anything you know a child would enjoy). If you pick an Angel s tag, please sign up on the register next to the tree. Remember to take an instruction sheet with you! It tells you what you need to know about the program, which ends December 1-2.
