COS is seeking a part-time science teacher for the school year to teach Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Resumes are to be submitted to 810 Soldiers Way, Evansville, IL The Garms Family Thanks You Dear St. Mark, Thank you for having us at your church on July 12 & 13! We had so much fun sharing the gifts and talents God has given us during both services. It was wonderful to meet you all and make new friends. Thank you, Pastor Al, for giving us the opportunity to bless others. Thank you also, Pastor & Donna, for the meal on Saturday night. It was great to catch up with you. We pray God would richly bless you all as you serve Him and those around you! Joy in the Journey with Jesus, The Garms Family Peace Meal from Peacemaker Ministries Agonizing for Peace... Like a Gladiator Paul's letter to the Ephesians focuses heavily on peacemaking. The first three chapters provide a glorious description of God's plan of salvation. In the fourth chapter, Paul begins to explain how we should respond to what Christ has done for us. Note carefully what Paul places at the top of his list of practical applications of the gospel: "As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:1-3). The Greek word that is translated "make every effort" in this passage means to strive eagerly, earnestly, and diligently. It is a word that a trainer of gladiators might have used when he sent men to fight to the death in the Coliseum: "Make every effort to stay alive today!" So too must a Christian agonize for peace and unity. Obviously, token efforts and halfhearted attempts at reconciliation fall far short of what Paul had in mind. Taken from The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict by Ken Sande, Updated Edition (Grand Rapids, Baker Books, 2003) p. 66. Food for Thought Are you struck by the call to agonize for peace and unity--like a gladiator? Do you know who agonizes for peace and unity like a gladiator? Christ Jesus! Before you get down on yourself by thinking, "Wow, I should really be agonizing more about my peacemaking...", hear the good news: Christ himself is a "peacemaking gladiator." When you "fight" for reconciliation, even in a seemingly lost cause, you're fighting back to back with the greatest warrior who ever lived--the Lord himself. The battle may turn out differently than you expect or prefer, but take comfort in this: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise" (Ps. 51:17). Fight the good fight of reconciliation with the Lord, not you, in the lead. Follow his lead, leaving the results in his hands, and you will see that, far from despising your efforts, the Lord will accept them as a sacrifice--and he will honor them, in his own way, in his own time. 5 2014 Panther Baseball There will be a meeting on August 3, at 7:00 pm for all boys interested in playing baseball this fall for the St. Mark s Panther Baseball Team. Practices will begin on August 4 from 3:30-5:30 pm. The upcoming season, practices, games and expectations will be discussed at the meeting. All players needs physical done before they can practice or play in games. If you have any questions or concerns or cannot make the meeting, please contact Coach Zobel ( ). Dinner in Celebration of Our Own Seminarian St. Mark's will have one of its members attending Concordia Seminary. A St. Mark's School graduate, Stefan Gramenz, son of Virgil and Karen (St. Mark's 1st grade teacher) Gramenz will be a seminarian this fall at Concordia Fort Wayne. Stefan will be dedicating his life to the service of our Lord as a pastor. Help us celebrate and support his decision, as he begins his studies, by coming to a spaghetti dinner at St. Mark's School on July 27 from 11 AM - 1 PM. In agreement with the family's request, any free will offerings (checks may be made to "Concordia Theological Seminary - Fort Wayne) will be designated to support the Seminary and not directly Stefan. Any donation of dessert will be appreciated. Preparing for Worship The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Proper 13 (3 August 2014) Isaiah 55:1 5; Romans 9:1 5 (6 13); Matthew 14:13 21 Christ Jesus, the Living Bread from Heaven, Feeds the Children of God By the Gospel of the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever (Rom. 9:5), we are the children of God (Rom. 9:8), not because of works but because of him who calls (Rom. 9:11). Therefore, listen diligently and hear, that your soul may live. By His sacrificial death in His flesh and blood, He has made an everlasting covenant for us. Since He now calls us to Himself, we come to Him and eat what is good, and delight in rich food (Is. 55:2 3). He has come with divine compassion to save us from sin and death and to feed us with Himself. As our Lord Jesus once took bread, said a blessing, broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds (Matt. 14:18 19), He also now takes bread, blesses it by His Word to be His very body, and distributes it to His Church by the hand of His called and ordained servants. Just as they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces, there is more than enough for His whole Church to eat and to be satisfied (Matt. 14:20). Page -9- Page -10-

Because those who eat and drink our Lord's body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor or an elder.
