2 WELCOME! Welcome to God s House! We thank you for coming by and visiting with us today. We pray that the Word of God which you heard today strengthen your faith in Jesus Christ. If you do not have a church home and are interested in joining us at St. John, please talk with Pastor Matthew Vik right away. St. John is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). St. John operates a half day Pre-School and a full day kindergarten through eighth grade Lutheran Elementary School. St. John is also a member of the Fox Valley Lutheran High School federation. 3 Eighth Sunday after Pentecost July 14 th & 15 th, 2013 Our Order of Worship Liturgy: Service of the Word (CW pg 38) Opening Hymn: 255 Open now Thy Gates of Beauty First Lesson: Deuteronomy 30: Then the LORD your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The LORD will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your fathers, 10 if you obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach. 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it? 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it? 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Psalm of the Day: Psalm 25 (pg. 74 in red hymnal) Second Lesson: Colossians 1: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse: Grace and peace to you from God our Father. 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints 5 the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God s grace in all its truth. 7 2

4 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. 9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. 10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Stand Gospel Lesson: Luke 10: On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 26 What is written in the Law? he replied. How do you read it? 27 He answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind ; and, Love your neighbor as yourself. 28 You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. 29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 In reply Jesus said: A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took 3

Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have. 36 Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? 37 The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him. We engage in the continuing development of disciples of Jesus Christ by gathering for worship and fellowship in order to grow in faith and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. By God s grace we proclaim Christ and His Word with our lips and lives. As Christians, we realize that it is only through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments one can be equipped for discipleship and bringing glory to God. 4

6 As part of the body of Christ, we keep worship, personal Bible study, and Christian education as essential elements of our congregational life. We encourage our members and all people to grow in their faith and knowledge of Christ and His will for us. Here at St. John, we are welcoming to our community and strive to share God s plan of grace with them. St. John is known as a visible example of God s Love for all people. Flowers at the Feet of Jesus: Today the flowers at the feet of Jesus are in memory of Gerry Wierschke. They were donated by her husband, Donald Wierschke. Please Keep the Wierschke family in your prayers today. Apple Valley Food Pantry Donation Day Update: The next Donation Day for AVFP is Sunday, July 21 st. The pantry is in need of the following items: pancake mix and syrup, dish & laundry soaps, cereal, canned meats such as tuna & beef, chunky soups, peanut butter & jam, rice, cake mix & frosting, and cookies. 7 FVL Letter from Delegate, Jeremy Uecker Dear Members of St. John, Today is Fox Valley Lutheran Sunday. Although it is now summertime, FVL is still a busy place. In early June, precisely two weeks after graduation, FVL s commons, auditorium, and band and choir rooms are all in heavy use. Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin kicks off their season every year at FVL. There are many hours spent memorizing and running music and movements with the music. To end out that first week, Vanguard performs in both the Brillionfest Parade and the American Flag Day Parade, between which LVW spends the night at FVL. After that first week in the season, LVW uses FVL as its home base for rehearsing and meeting point for their tours each week. FVL is also host to many summer athletic camps both to grade school children and high schoolers. From Volley ball, basketball, baseball, track and field or cross country, even golf camps are available (however those are off site at a local driving range.) Students are divided in each of these camps into different teams based on their grade. Each team has a high school helper to teach the campers the true meaning of teamwork as well as stretching and strengthening certain muscles used in their sport. At the end of these camps, which are generally a week long, the teams take part in a tournament against other teams in the camp for small prizes that have to do with the sport they are in. Aside from Student life during the summer, the FVL technology wing also goes through all of the necessary renovations needed for having over three hundred computers throughout the school. Each summer FVL hosts a golf outing that raises funds for this reason. This golf outing is sponsored by many businesses that are owned by WELS members, and is open to anyone in the federation churches. Sadly this year s golf outing has already passed, but it was a huge success and half of the funds were matched by some of the sponsoring businesses. Registration will be open next year again starting in middle January, if you are interested. We just started a new financial fiscal year with FVL two weeks ago. Our goal for the first week was $241 but we only came up with $100 so please prayerfully consider donating to FVL. Thank you for all of your support, Jeremy Uecker -- Fox Valley Lutheran delegate 6
