2 Page 2 THE MESSENGER For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:..a time to keep silence, and a time to speak (Ecclesiastes 1:1, 7b) Have you ever been with someone who talks a lot? I m sure most of us have. Sometimes it can try one s patience. When we encounter people who are talkers we don t feel much validation. It can feel like we are being ignored. You may have heard the saying, There is a reason God gave us one mouth and two ears. You likely have heard how important it is for us to share the good news of Jesus. To be a witness to our faith. And that is not only important but it is part of our calling as followers of Jesus. Jesus calls all Christians to go therefore and make disciples of all nations.. (Mt 28:19) But I believe that before we share, before we talk, we need to listen. And listening is not always easy. It takes intention and a real interest in others to be a good listener. Sometimes it s hard to listen and not become defensive. Listening is good evangelism. Listening to someone s story, validates them. You don t need to try and convert them or even get them to come to church. Evangelism or witnessing, I believe, begins by being a good listener. And really, this kind of evangelism works best with people we already know. There will already be a level of trust. You might think you don t know anyone who is not a Christian but the demographics tell us that more and more people do not believe in Jesus or don t think they really need God in their lives. If you don t think you know anyone who is not an active Christian pray about it and see if God will lead you to that person. Then, if you don t know them, get to know them and develop a relationship with them. It is helpful to begin by thinking about how important your own faith is. What difference does knowing Jesus make in your life? Maybe write it down on paper. Then look for opportunities to ask leading questions to people you know. Oftentimes it can connect to typical conversations. When there is a tragedy in the news, you could ask, do you ever wonder if there s a God? Or, I wonder how people can make it Mission Statement:

3 Page 3 V O LUME XII ISSUE V through that difficult time? Sometimes a conversation may lead to asking your friend if they have ever prayed. Or did they have any experiences of going to church or an awareness of God as a child? And then just listen. Don t judge. Just affirm what that person is saying. Thank them for what they shared. If appropriate you can ask for permission to share what has helped you in difficult times or what difference your faith makes. But that may not happen until later. I realize this probably puts many people out of their comfort zones. But we are to take some risks. People need to know about a God who cares about them, who loves them unconditionally. With the help of the Holy Spirit we can fulfill our calling to share the good news of Jesus. Pray that God will give you the opportunities and courage to be a listening evangelist. The following items were collected: Bath Towels Soap Toothbrushes Nail Clippers Combs With these items and those we have remaining from the fall of 2017 collection we will still be in need of a number of items to reach our goal of 50 kits for We will have a later note listing exactly what is still needed. Thank you for helping to complete this project of Faith in Action. WELCA Stewardship Carol Peterson-Coordinator Transportation Needs Our administrative assistant, Laurel Boyer, is urgent need of a used, inexpensive (or donated) vehicle. Something temporary that she could use while trying to find something would even be very helpful. Please contact her if you can help at

6 Page 6 THE MESSENGER Our Evangelism Ministry Team would like to identify where members live in our area. There is a map in the entryway. Please take a pin and place it close to where you live, write your household name on the list and write the corresponding number next to your pin. Later we will be asking for members to volunteer to be a Neighborhood Hospitality Greeter. This would mean welcoming anyone that would be new to their neighborhood and bringing them a gift from English Lutheran. We would provide the gifts and training to do this. 7 Page 7 THE MESSENGER Youth Ministry Recap: In April we wrapped up our Wednesday Nite Live program with a Soul Supper picnic and Bingo with all of the students, parents and teachers. A special shout out to all of the volunteers that make WNL possible. You are wonderful and we are so thankful for you! We celebrated these volunteers on April 29 th. We had a first communion class for 3 students: Drew, Jocelyn and Lucas as they then received their first holy communion on April 29 th. Summer Stretch: Open to those going into 7-12 th grade for 5 full days this summer! We are looking for new places this summer to volunteer and have our fun events. Our last day of Summer Stretch will be at Valley Fair! Registration forms are available in the office. Please turn in registration materials and money to Zoe by May 13 th. Mission Trip: Next meeting: May 6 at 6pm at St James Trinity. Our mission trip to Denver will be here before we know it! We are so thankful for all of your help and support.

Checks can be made out to ELCB Youth (Scholarships are available for those entering 7-9 th grade- please contact Zoe) This program couldn t work without parent chaperones! Chaperones (21+) are needed for the full day including helping drive. Please consider joining us for the day! Chaperones who join us at Valley Fair will also get a free Summer Stretch t-shirt! Permission/ Release: My child,, has my permission to participate in all activities of the Summer Stretch Program during the summer of Photos may be taken and shared online or in newsletters, I understand no name will be shared. 10 Page 10 VO LUME XII ISSUE V Chippewa Falls Mission Coalition News English Lutheran is part of the Chippewa Falls Mission Coalition and has supported them in various projects over the past few years. I am currently attending their monthly meetings on behalf of our church. I am very impressed with the work they do, their commitment and the things that can be achieved by talking and meeting together. The Coalition met at Faith Lutheran Church in Chippewa Falls on April 2nd. These were the meeting notes: The Legacy Center in Chippewa Falls is up and running on a limited basis. A volunteer information meeting was held on March 28 which was well attended. This facility is located in downtown Chippewa Falls and is intended as a central intake/clearing house for people with serious basic needs (food, shelter, clothing). A Legacy Food Pantry will not have regular hours but will rather be an emergency food resource in the beginning. Immediate needs are for a variety of volunteers and monthly operating funds. Hope Village/Tiny Houses update. Five houses are occupied with seven individuals. There are plans for two additional houses in the community. Food Packing Event. Mike Cohoon is looking for volunteers to help with the Food For Kidz mission on May 5 th at Parkview School with a goal to package 100,000 meals. Initially the plan was to ship many of the food packets overseas but now the plan is to share them with our local food pantries. They are actively looking for volunteer donors and packers. A sign up sheet is on the Mission Coalition bulletin board. Revive Chippewa Valley a Christian Revival opportunity. A community area event April 8-14 th which will focus on Bible based training, outreach of the Gospel, and fellowship. Landmark Christian Church is leading the effort in this community but activities also occur in many surrounding communities. Lather with Love Soap Mission. Our Mission Coalition collected more than 1,300 soap items for Lather With Love. Items were distributed to local food pantries. Lighten Your Load Family Laundry Mission continue to grow. Another volunteer sign-up will occur in May. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 7 th at Central Lutheran in Chippewa Falls. These are good neighbors and we can participate both individually or collectively as our time and talents allow. This is a network of caring plug in!!
