We have tickets and pictures of the quilt available in the church office. Lutheran Witness It is time to renew your Lutheran Witness subscription. The new rate is $18, and the deadline is November 12. Please make sure to let us know your correct mailing address when you make payment for your new subscription. Wurstmart November 4 Don t forget about our Wurstmart next Sunday, 11 1:30 p.m. Be sure to turn in your volunteer sheets. Even if you cannot volunteer we hope to see you there to share good food and fellowship. There are flyers at each door, please take one or more and post them at work or any other public place. 4

5 ST. MARK S LUTHERAN SCHOOL NOTES Our 2nd grade class assisted by their teacher Alexa Zacheis will lead us in chapel on Wednesday, October 31. Our offering for the next few chapel services will be designated for the LCMS World Relief and Human Care s Disaster Response which is in North Carolina dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. Everyone is invited to attend our weekly chapel service that begin around 8:25 am at the church weather permitting. St. Mark s will be having their fall costume parade again this year on Wednesday, October 31 at 1:00 pm in the school gym. Students may dress up in cute, creative, funny, school appropriate costumes. The students will dress up starting at 12:30 and proceed to the gym with their class at 1:00 pm. The students will then parade around the gym and be judged on categories such as most creative, funniest, and pop-culture. The parade should end by 2:00 pm and students will be dismissed back to their classrooms for their fall parties. Anyone and everyone are welcome to come and watch the costume parade!! St. Mark s will dismiss at 11:15 am on Friday, November 2nd. Latchkey will be available before school but no latchkey services after dismissal. St. Mark s 7th & 8th grade is selling Coke products for their individual class trips. Each case of (24) 20oz soda, Dasani water and flavored water and 20oz Powerade is $ Vitamin Water, Tum-E Yummies, and juice are also available at different prices for each. There is sure to be one to quench your thirst! Payment is due at the time the order is placed and order forms are due Monday, November 5th and soda will be delivered the week of November 8th. Stop by the school to place your order if you are not contacted by a student. 5

6 St. Mark s would like to invite ALL AREA VETERANS, their families and spouses of fallen Veterans to attend chapel with the students on Friday, November 9 at 12:30 pm at St. Mark s Church. The faculty and students would like to recognize these Veterans who have risked their life so that we may have freedom. Everyone is then encouraged to return to school to be entertained by the students and then enjoy some refreshments. We hope to see a lot of Veterans and their families in attendance! St. Mark s Lutheran School is still accepting candy or monetary donations for our participation in Steeleville s Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, October 31, and for our students during our Fall Costume parade at school earlier that afternoon. This has been on our calendar for over a month so make sure you put it on yours! Plan to come to St. Mark s Lutheran School on Tuesday, November 20 at 5:30pm for a fun evening of Painting for the Panthers! You will have an opportunity to choose from 3 large wooden hanging signs (a manger scene, a Santa head, and a cross) for $ All painting materials, punch and yummy appetizers will be provided. Children are invited to join and will have a choice of painting a Panther paw or ornament for $ All proceeds will go to St. Mark s Lutheran School. Pre-registration is required, and the deadline is Friday, November 9th. Stop by the school to pick up your reservation form and hope to see you there! 7 Christ Our Savior Lutheran High School Help us promote COS: Stop by COS and pick up a free yard sign to put in your yard or business. Post-Prom Smoked Pork Butt Fundraiser: COS students are selling smoked pork butts to help raise money for their Post-Prom in April You may order a pork butt for $35 by calling COS or talking to a COS student. Orders and payment are due by Nov. 2. This year the pork will be smoked by The Burnt End in Red Bud. Fun Raiser Game Night: Join us on Friday, November 9 from 4-8:30 in the mezzanine for a family game night. Learn a new board game or bring your favorite. We will provide sloppy joes and beverages. Bring a snack to share. Come when you can and stay until you need to leave. Please RSVP to by 11/5 so we know how much food to have ready. This is a fun raiser no charge. Shadow Days: Parents of eighth graders and potential transfer students are encouraged to call and make arrangements for their student to spend a day at Christ Our Savior shadowing a COS student and learning more about the COS advantage. Calling Thrivent Members: If you are a member of Thrivent and are willing to help COS at no cost to you, please consider organizing or participating in a Thrivent Action Team. Each Thrivent member is eligible to lead two project teams per year. Every project team is given up to $250 along with organizational materials to help make their project successful. We have many projects that would help further the mission of COS. We can even help you fill out the application. Contact mchristman@coslhs.org for more information. 7

8 Randolph County Health Dept Walk-in Flu Clinics The Randolph County Health Department (RCHD) will partner with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Randolph County to provide flu clinics. The RSVP sponsored by Western Egyptian EOC will assist the RCHD with volunteers. Everyone 6 months of age and older needs to receive flu vaccine every year and is welcome to get their flu vaccine at any of these clinics. High dose flu vaccine for those 65 years and older as well as Pediatric flu vaccine for those 6-35 months is available. Regular and Pediatric flu vaccine are $40 per dose. High dose flu vaccine is $70 per dose. The flu mist is not available this year from our health department. We are able to bill the following: 1) Medicare and 2) Current or retired state of Illinois employees. Individuals not covered by the above can pay by cash or check. A receipt and, if needed, information to submit an insurance claim, will be provided. The Randolph County Health Department is no longer a Medicaid provider. 9 The Angel Tree Program is getting ready to start this week! We will have the Angel Tree up in the Fellowship Hall, but our Angel children s names won t be on there until next week. So be watching the tree! The Evangelism Board sponsors this project to help children of families in need, in and around the Randolph county area, to make Christmas in their homes a happy one. Our participation the last few years has been very good and Vicki Wathan, who is the coordinator for the program, is grateful for the support from St. Marks. We know it s early to be thinking about this, but it takes time for you, the participants, to consider their Angel Child s needs and wishes, purchase and bring the gifts for them, then to have them distributed to the families in plenty of time for Christmas. When the names show up on the tree, pick an Angel tag off the tree for the child you want to help, and then sign up. There will be a place for you to sign up next to the tree, asking for your name, your telephone number, and the Angel child s corresponding number printed on the tag. (Please take an instructions sheet with you before you leave, there s important information for you on there!) Hurricane Relief You can provide help to those suffering as a result of Hurricane Michael by making a donation to LCMS Disaster Relief at or calling or by making a donation to the American Red Cross at or calling If you would rather donate through St. Mark s, mark your gift for Hurricane Relief and we will forward it to LCMS Disaster Relief. 9

11 Activity Bags Reminder Just a reminder that we have Activity Bags available that are primarily designed for preschoolers. However, older brothers and sisters, and even parents and grandparents will enjoy quietly interacting with their little ones while looking at and working on activities included in these bags. Nothing says only little children can pick one up! So please look for them hanging on hooks on the north wall beside the north doors, and some are also hanging on the coat racks in the narthex. Most of the materials are the same in each bag, but each one has a different book in it. They are cream colored and have a cross printed on them. The bags are to be enjoyed during service and returned to their respective hooks or hangers when service is over. Our Evangelism Board enjoyed preparing these and hope your children enjoy using them. If you know of other Christian materials, we can add to them in the future we are open to suggestions. The bags will be reloaded occasionally as the seasons change. Note to parents: It s okay to remove finished activity pages for your children to take home with them the bags will be replenished occasionally. 11

13 Defensive Driving Course The Western Egyptian Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is sponsoring the AARP defensive driving course. The classes will be held on November 8th and 9th from 8:30-12:30 each day at Steeleville Village Hall. The Defensive Driving classes are for those who: Just want to drive better and more safely--and enjoy doing it. Desire an insurance discount for participating in an eight (8) hour course, a discount that lasts for 3 years; Want more information on the effects of the aging process on driving and how to deal with them effectively, or who Wish information on the effects of medication on driving safety and steps to take to mitigate them. Defensive Driving students learn defensive driving and how to compensate for normal aging changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. The eight-hour classroom course is offered in two four-hour sessions. It is open to drivers aged 50 or older. The state of Illinois requires insurance companies to give a discount on automobile liability coverage for most drivers 55 and older. You may get a discount if you are 50 to 54. Contact your insurance agent for specific information concerning your discount. It's well worth it! There is a $15.00 fee for AARP members and a $20.00 fee for non AARP members for materials and to defray other costs. If you would be interested in attending this course, please call the Steeleville Senior Center at to register. 13

They have placed boxes at each door to collect the non-perishable foods and other household necessities you donate. Last year we were able to collect a great deal of items for our neighbors in need.
