1 VOLUME SIXˑ ISSUE TEN OCTOBER 2017 A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TRINITY CHURCH WAUWATOSA "Making Your Mark" By Ann Brophy As Trinity is wrapping up it's 'Our Faith Our Future' capital campaign we have all been given the chance to make our mark on the future of our parish. Certainly contribu ng to our parish's future in this way is important. Yet there are other ways for us to make our marks as well. I can tell you there were a number of adults and teenagers that made their marks on my two girls (now 32 and 30 ) as they grew up at Trinity - through Sunday school, VBS, Youth group, handbell choir, and adults modeling leadership and Chris an love. Other "mark makers" include those that helped to design and fund the Welcome Garden; build a deck and pa o at the Church Street rectory, design and install the columbarium in our chapel; determine the best plan for an unused house on the lot adjacent to the church; install a green roof, then add a deck, rail and stairs; design, fund and install the stained glass panel in the library. Individuals involved in these projects can proudly see the visible signs of the fruits of their labors and remember how they came to be. But o en newer members of our church family may not be aware of the back stories, so here is li le history of a recent example of making a mark. A while back there was a thought that the liturgical art which graces our sacred space did not include anything from more recent genera ons. One could admire the beau ful stained glass windows, the Christus Rex, the chapel and columbarium, the Trinity window on the ceiling of the library, the last supper bas relief piece over the lectern, the mosaic shields, etc. But not much had been added in awhile. One person hatched an idea, and began talking to others. Soon there was an invita on to join in the conversa on to imagine what a liturgical art commi ee might look like. A group convened, ideas were bounced around, funding sources iden fied, liturgical ar sts ve ed, designs presented, modified and chosen. And then, In Lent of 2014 our first set of custom banners were hung. Would people like them? We didn't know, but the response turned out to be posi ve so we proceeded with the plan to add others for different church seasons. Last year, through the generosity of the family of the Rev. Dr. Peter Arvedson, five banners were commissioned for the season a er Pentecost (the green season). Those banners are gradually displayed throughout the season as a way of punctua ng our journey through it. For some, these banners provide something beau ful to reflect upon and to inspire thoughts about bread, wine, and the blue waters of bap sm. For others they may bring thoughts of "what's that supposed to be" and others who hardly no ced at all. Friday, Dec. 1 6:00 pm Wauwatosa Historical Society s Annual Tour of Homes Warren Avenue and New Kitchens Featured on Home Tour Trinity Episcopal Church is headquarters for the Wauwatosa Historical Society s Annual Tour of Homes, What s Cookin on Warren? on Saturday, October 7. The tour gets its name from the fact that all six homes although ed to Wauwatosa s history and architecturally significant have beau ful new designer kitchens that are in keeping with their home s character. Five homes built in the 1920s have Warren Avenue addresses, while a sixth, built about 1899, is at the southwest corner of Church Street and Warren. They are within easy walking distance of each other. The tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Children younger than 10 including infants are not allowed on the tour. Tickets, $17 in advance, will be available at Li le Read Book Store, 7603 W. State St., and Wisconsin Garden and Pet, 8520 W. North Ave. (cash or check only at these outlets); at or by calling the historical society at (414) Society members can buy advance ckets for $14 by calling the historical society. On the day of the tour, ckets will be $20 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Proceeds from the home tour support the educa onal and preserva on missions of the historical society. 2

3 (Con nued from page 1) Regardless of varying opinions, it was the process which made this a holy endeavor. Was it worth it? A er all, they're only banners. Or are they? I believe everyone, on some level, hopes to make their mark... On their church, their community, society, the world. However, making a mark is seldom done in isola on. It requires listening, communica ng, compromise, inclusion, coopera on and respect for all opinions, even those with whom you may not agree. To make your mark in this way requires making space for the Holy Spirit throughout the process. For if we want things to be a certain way, and it doesn't jive with the way someone else wants it to be, only by allowing the Holy Spirit in to work along side us can we arrive at an endpoint that isn't mine, isn't yours, but is ours. Maybe we could all benefit from spending some me thinking and praying about how we might make our marks, large or small, on Trinity Church Wauwatosa. There's a good chance we could all be be er for it. Men's Spirituality Group This months Men's Spirituality Group will move to the second Monday of the month: 7:00 pm, October 9 at Trinity Church. 6 WHEN: Saturday, November 4 MARK YOUR CALENDARS! 6:30 9:00 PM A Mythological Awesome Auc on Everything You Need To Know! WHERE: WHY: Trinity Episcopal Church, Fellowship Hall To raise money for our parish outreach efforts. All proceeds will benefit our services and ministries that support groups who need our help! HOW: There are many ways to support the auc on! Buy a cket for $10 Tickets will be sold a er the 9:30 a.m. service as well as at the door Invite a friend Admission is free for first me auc on goers! Donate an item or service that can be auc oned off. There are sign-up sheets in the hallway. If you don t have anything to donate, why not ask your favorite store or restaurant to donate? Come up with a clever costume! Although it is not required to dress up, it certainly makes the evening a li le more interes ng! Bid high and bid o en! Here is how it works: Every item or service is placed or iden fied in the fellowship hall with a bid sheet. You stroll around the tables of items, with food or drink in hand, and write your bids for items that interest you. When someone else outbids you, that s good because the point is to get high bids to raise money for needy organiza ons. Repeat un l me is up. At the end of the evening, the highest bidder wins. Of course you have to pay for the items but remember it is all for a good cause! OTHER: A few notes of interest: Kids are welcome and will be entertained with their own kid s party downstairs that will include dinner, a movie and other ac vi es. Auc on items range from a gi card pull ($10), to homemade baked goods, ckets to the movies or performances, to lawn and baby-si ng services, to overnight getaways and trips to Ireland. There is something for everyone! If you would like to contribute food for the event, please contact Ann White. If you have any ques ons about dona ons, please ask Jill Paradowski

8 A Red Door Clothes Reflection By Phyllis Teets The last day of The St. James and Trinity joint Red Door Clothes Ministry was not a sad day. The shared ministry served the community for ten years. Clients were in and out choosing what they needed, wanted or liked or even might I say a preferred style of clothing. Mostly though, it was something to keep them warm another nourishment for the body and soul, to keep it warm or to keep on going. Overall the Red Door Clothes Ministry was a success in so many ways. The ministry filled a need in the community for those that have less, less than we have. Clothing was just part of it. The clients were made to feel accepted and welcomed. To know their name, their face, their voice and then to turn around and say "Good Morning," "Welcome," "How are you," or "Nice to see you again" is an affirma on and acceptance that they belong to us and to the Lord. It was where I felt I belonged as well as all the members of the ministry. The thank you's, the handshakes, hugs, smiles and gra tude shown to us because we cared was our reward. Holy Jesus keep them safe! There will be opportuni es to con nue to serve the Lord near and far for it is our responsibility as Chris ans to listen, to tell, to love and to act according to his teachings. It was done and will be con nued to be done as we live the Chris an Life. Thank you people of Trinity who gave their clothes, monies, me and prayers to The Red Door Clothes Ministry. Those you served are grateful. A hip hip hooray to Jane Johnson, Jill Paradowski and Nancy Huber for their unending faith, dedica on and leadership to this special joint ministry. Red Door Clothes closed on September 16, God bless you and thank you.
