3 PASTOR S MESSAGE Lenten Pathways in the Desert Lent by its very nature is designed for a trip that is new and exciting and takes us out of our comfort zone and into the desert or its equivalent. From a spiritual perspective, it is helpful to think of any desert not only as a place of trial and danger but also as the home of refreshing oases, deep wells, fresh water and warm hospitality. During Lent, God wants us to venture into the desert for some new experiences of mercy and forgiveness, enlightenment and truth, hope and inspiration. In the Fourth and Fifth centuries in Egypt, Syria and other parts of the Middle East, Christian women and men fled into the real desert in order to find God and themselves in solitude, asceticism, silence, prayer and hospitality toward other seekers of Jesus Way. They left behind for us a treasure trove of desert wisdom collected in the form of sayings and words of counsel. What was new and experimental about their spirituality? They prayed simply and with few words, often repeating a sacred word over and over as a sort of focusing mantra. They were particularly attentive to living without creature comforts and with simplicity of possessions. They lived with a lot of quiet and solitude so that they could do battle with the demons both within and without of themselves. Their approach to scripture was one that saw God s Word as simple, clear, challenging and transforming. It was this Word of God that, digested as real food for the spirit, taught them humility, courage, perseverance and deepest joy. In our times, such a commitment to silence, honest and simplicity is itself an ascetical discipline. One of the most characteristic of the prayers that have come down to us from the desert is the Jesus Prayer. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy upon me a Sinner. This prayer is to be repeated over and over, united with our breathing, until it actually becomes a prayer of the heart and allows us in the words of Saint Paul to pray always. On the surface this prayer may seem a little harsh since it suggests that we are all only sinners. It is important, however, to remember that we are sinners saved in Jesus Christ and that the reality of our helplessness is far surpassed by the mercy and re-creating grace of God. The Jesus Prayer might just be an pathway to new wisdom, self-knowledge and virtue. It could be that oasis of Lenten refreshment that we seek (in the office, driving home, doing chores, exercising, visiting our Chapel.) Try it out as a Lenten experiment in prayer and you might be surprised and journey far through this desert way. As one Desert Father said Go and sit in your cell and your cell will teach you everything. Wherever that cell might be located. Msgr. Michael D. McGraw Who Are the Guides We Really Follow? CLERGY DEVOTION For the third straight week, we have a chance to listen to the greatest homily ever given: the one Jesus gives us in today s Gospel. We can imagine like any preacher, Jesus would have given the same or similar message on many occasions and he gave this homily both on a mountain as St. Matthew records the famous Sermon on the Mount and on a plain, as St. Luke told us three weeks ago. The message is the same and summarizes Jesus whole revolutionary Good News about who he is and what he calls us to. He started a couple of weeks ago with the Beatitudes, saying that the people who are truly blessed, both in this world and in the next, are those who put God and his Kingdom first in their lives. Last week we heard him preach that, like he always did, we are called to love our enemies, to pray for our persecutors, to do good to those who persecute us, to turn the other cheek, to walk the extra mile out of love for even someone who doesn t love us. Today Jesus continues that incredible homily for us, in which he continues to speak to us just as much as he spoke to his listeners on the plain 2000 years ago. And he s as relevant now as he ever was, as if we were touching on just what plagues so many people today. Therefore, I just hope to accent what the Good teacher himself taught us, so that we might today put what he calls us to into action. Dear brothers and sisters, we have to ask ourselves, who are the guides we really follow? Do we follow Christ, no matter how hard it is to follow him, even when he s leading us through the dark to some distant place, when we don t understand a particular teaching, but follow him and that teaching anyway? He s the only guide who has gotten to the destination where we want to end up. Fr. Dominic Toan Tran 3 PASTORAL STAFF Msgr. Michael D. McGraw, Fr. Dominic Toan-Tran, Fr. 7 OUR PARISH EVOLUTION FROM During this upcoming season of Lent, we are ever more aware of how important worship, social activities, and ministry volunteerism are to our parish. In the background of these activities and providing gracious settings for our parish-based activities exists our physical plant and all of our facilities. It seems worthwhile to pay attention to how our parish has evolved during the past 10 years. Below is a snap shot of this evolution that highlights how our important facilities and improvements have developed. They are the result of your incredible parishioner energy and financial support and generosity. St. Paul once described the church as a spiritual edifice and that is true, it is also in a very real way a physical edifice constructed of so many living stones our committed parishioners. We give special thanks for God s guidance and blessings as we journey on our 60th Anniversary and the most sacred of seasons. To gather we pray for conversion and continued growth in holiness and good works. Our God will never be outdone in generosity... 10 ST. JOAN OF ARC VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BRUNCH Last Saturday, February 24, we gathered in Mercy Center to honor our wonderful volunteers who throughout the year have selflessly offered their time to service so many ministries at Catholic Church. It was a delightful time of fellowship and love. 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18

11 So Many Success Stories from Parishioners in 60 Years! Church is not just a building but a community of believers in Jesus! St. Joan s is my home. When I moved to Boca over 40 years ago, my sister, uncle, nieces and nephews were already involved with the Church and school. Thanks to Sr. Immaculata, I became involved in the Religious Education Program starting about 30 years ago. I loved watching the children grow deeper into their faith with each passing year while I learned more of my faith. More recently I have been involved with the CCW, which excels in stewardship, spirituality, and friendship. I have been honored to be their service coordinator. Another great ministry I ve experienced is AIM, which emphasizes the contributions all are called to make to the church even those with disabilities. What makes special? It is a caring faith-filled community. We have been blessed with holy, dedicated, caring priests and deacons who are willing to go the extra mile for this parish. The parishioners, and their involvement is what makes this parish tick, and are the heart of the parish. I pray God continues to bless this parish so that it continues to grow! --Kathryn Meyers *To help celebrate our 60th Anniversary year-long celebration, St. Joan s would love to hear your success stories too! Please Fr. Martin at dunne_martin@stjoan.org and we ll likely include your account of how this parish has greatly affected the lives of you and your loved ones!* Congratulations to our Alumni who have achieved the highest rank attainable in scouting EAGLE SCOUTS! Saint Joan of Arc Troop 323 is proud to announce four new Eagle Scouts. Sean Sullivan, Paul Bergamini, Richard Rafalski and Joe Giffin all of whom attended St Joan of Arc Catholic School. These young men have earned the esteemed title of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Achieving this honor takes determination, dedication, and utilization of leadership skills to complete their final community service projects. Local communities and schools have been enriched through the culmination of these projects which included, building tables and benches for an elementary school, a sustainable butterfly garden at a park, collection of and ceremony for 100 retired U.S. flags, and preserving gopher tortoises along with a bird/butterfly garden at Deerfield Island. Richard Rafalski is continuing to serve our parish as a lector at the Sunday evening youth Mass. SJA Troop 323 Council has helped twenty four boys reach the rank of Eagle Scout under the guidance of Scout Master Tom Vickers, John Kastritis and many other dedicated leaders. Sean, Paul, Richard and Joe we wish you the best as you pursue your future endeavors and congratulations on your outstanding accomplishment.
