HOSPITAL & HOSPICE PASTORAL VISITATION Boca Raton Regional Hospital communicated to us that they will no longer share with the Churches or Synagogues the names or faith affiliations of their patient population. Therefore in order to receive a pastoral visit from a Priest (anointing of the sick or confession) or Eucharistic Minister (holy communion), parishioners must call SJA Parish Office by 10:30am Monday through Friday, and request such a pastoral visitation. This same procedure applies for Trustbridge Hospice, Inc. Calls received later in the day will be responded to on the following day. REMEMBER YOUR SPIRITUAL FAMILY AS WE REMEMBER YOU... Side by side we have been here for you through important family events. At Weddings, Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, Hospital Visits and Last Rites, we are there in support; just as your family would be. Please consider remembering in your will, for donations in memory of a loved one who has passed away, or in lieu of flowers. Please call for more information. 3 To Rejoice Before the Lord! PASTOR S MESSAGE This Sunday is called Gaudette Sunday or Rejoice Sunday and breaks up for a weekend the more penitential mood and spirit of Advent. Even the rose vestment colors announce the Good News of our joyful freedom in Christ. It is true that sometimes in our complicated and multi-problem world it takes some searching to find reasons for joy and rejoicing. But every birth of a new baby, every healing and recovering from illness, every successful solution of problems in a family and every start in a new job may be a reason for rejoicing. When we look at our own lives and the state of the world through the prism of faith, we discover the hand of God at work. It becomes clear that all is grace and all tragedy is in the end absorbed into the glorious victory of Christ Risen. This Advent it is well worth our time to count our blessings and the evidences of God s love and mercy present in our lives. Contemplation and appreciating how filled with God s presence every moment of life is, will put a smile on our faces and a song of joy in our hearts. Rejoice, again I say rejoice! Msgr. Michael D. McGraw 3rd Sunday Advent CLERGY DEVOTION The crowds, in the gospel today, are looking for answers but not the kind that are usually asked. They are seeking guidance on how to change their lives in a way that conforms them to the will of God. They are inspired by the message of John the Baptist to turn away from sin and to make their lives holy. We too should be asking such questions seeking nothing less than holiness in our own lives. As we prepare for the coming of the infant Jesus how are we doing with the most important aspect of our lives, that of preparing our immortal souls for our final destination?. We might want to listen to John the Baptist and pay attention to how we act in our daily lives and how we treat our neighbor so that we might be examples of that Christian love that all Christians should be known for. 9 60th DIAMOND LEGACY: Many Parts: 1 Church Anniversary SAVE THE DATES Frank Sinatra s Rat Pack Concert: Saturday, February 2nd, In Mercy Center. Burgers, Bass, and Bungo Block Party: Friday, March 29th, On Parish Grounds. 60th Anniversary Musical Concert: October Location: TBD Anniversary Mass in Church with reception in Mercy Center: Sunday, November 10th, Diamond Gala for School: Friday, December 6th, At Polo Club. So Many Success Stories from Parishioners in 60 Years! My wife Eileen and I have been honored to be a part of this outstanding parish since virtually the beginning. Long before our first church building was dedicated in 1961, most school and church activities were held in this one building which formally served as both a World War II warehouse of the nearby airfield and a jelly factory. It was basic but served our needs and was affectionately called the, Boxwood Basilica or, Cobweb Cathedral. Every Friday evening a bunch of us would gather (I guess you would call us the first Dad s Club ), and break-down the school and then re-arrange everything within the warehouse for Sunday Mass. Every Sunday evening we would gather once again to rearrange the interior back into its school set-up (and all of this was long before air conditioning). But we didn t mind. We were extremely grateful there was a school because we and some other local families were trying to pool our resources to obtain a bus to send our children to the nearest Catholic school in Delray. Fortunately, four Sisters of Mercy had recently arrived in Florida from Cork Ireland only to learn their assignment in Stuart was no longer available. So we welcomed them to Boca Raton for them to establish a school here! Besides, we were always happy to spend time together and happy to help-out in every way we could, because both the church and school have given our family so much. To this day, every member of our family, down to the great-grandchildren, regularly & joyfully practices our Catholic faith. We continue to proudly participate at our home parish of St. Joan s every week. *To help celebrate our 60th Anniversary year-long celebration, St. Joan s would love to hear your success stories too! Please Fr. Martin at dunne_martin@stjoan.org and we ll likely include your account of how this parish has greatly affected the lives of you and your loved ones!* Joseph Massarella 9
