3 OCTOBER 1-2, 2016 THE PSTOR S CORNER Month of the Holy Rosary The month of October is the Month of the Rosary as well as stewardship month. One of the forms of stewardship we will be talking about is stewardship of prayer. This week let us make a conscious effort to practice stewardship of prayer in a concrete way by praying the Rosary and dedicating a time for prayer in our personal lives. The more we do this, the more it will become a habit. s Catholics it is a gift to have a devotion to praying the Rosary. When we pray the Rosary, we get closer to our Mother Mary. The mysteries of the Rosary help us reflect on the life of Jesus through the eyes of the Blessed Mother. What better way to get close to Our Lord than through the eyes of his mother? May we enter into a time of prayer as stewardship month unfolds. Let us make prayer a practice by taking time to pray a Rosary daily. men? men! GOSPEL REFLECTION LUKE 17:5-10 by FTHER JSON WILLIMS Lord, increase our faith! Sometimes I think it is discouraging to read how faith the size of a mustard seed can uproot a tree and plant it in the sea. Trees have never moved when I ve thought about it, so I am left wondering about just how little faith I must have. What s our Lord getting at here? It seems thanks be to God that many people have a substantial degree of faith. Yet, which one of us doesn t see the advantage for our walk of discipleship in asking the Lord for more faith? His answer to this request is a little perplexing, though. Jesus, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, could dole out his theological virtues however he wants, and, still, he offers his disciples this scenario to contemplate. He places before them the reality of the relationship between servant and master, disciple and teacher, human and God. In so doing he teaches us the absolute foundation of our faith: God is truly God Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier and I am a human creature, sinner, servant. Our faith, which is a grace with its source, object, and aim in God, necessarily has its foundation not in me and my thoughts and designs, but in God. What our Lord is calling us today to accept and rely on is that without him to show us the way and give us the grace we can do nothing. Faith grows when we look to him, not ourselves. May we all be faithful servants: first of God, and, flowing out of that, of neighbor. 3

4 SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH CLOSE R LOOK T O U R F I TH Catechesis What does God show us about himself when he sends his Son to us? God shows us in Jesus Christ the full depth of his merciful love. [65-66, 73] Through Jesus Christ the invisible God becomes visible. He becomes a man like us. This shows us how far God s love goes: he bears our whole burden. He walks every path with us. He is there in our abandonment, our sufferings, and our fear of death. He is there when we can go no farther, so as to open up for us the door leading into life. (YOUCT question 9) Liturgical Facts We are excited to introduce this new series on our Catechesis page of our bulletin. Each week, we will highlight a particular liturgical item or subject and explain its unique role it plays in the Divine Liturgy. To launch this new series, we have decided to do a few weeks on the liturgical vestments that our priests and deacons wear for Mass and other liturgies of the Church. This week we will highlight the amice. The amice consists of a white cloth connected to two long ribbon-like attachments, by which it is fastened around the shoulders of the priest. Before the liturgical reforms of 1972, its use was mandatory for all Roman Catholic Masses, but it is only required today if the alb does not cover the priest s ordinary clothing. Many priests choose to wear the amice for reasons of tradition or to prevent damage to their other vestments due to perspiration. While donning the amice, the priest first drapes the amice over his head (as with a hood), and then lowers it to his neck, tying it around his torso. During this action he prays a short prayer asking God to clothe him with the helmet of salvation. In fact, each of the vestments the priest wears for Mass has both a spiritual and practical use. The practical use, as mentioned above, is to prevent damage to the other vestments due to perspiration. The spiritual use can be summed up in the prayer the priest prays while he puts on the amice: Place upon me, O Lord, the helmet of salvation, that I may overcome the assaults of the devil. Know Your Saints SINT BRUNO was born in Cologne of the prominent Hartenfaust family. He studied at the Cathedral school at Rheims, and on his return to Cologne about 1055, was ordained and became a Canon at St. Cunibert s. He returned to Rheims in 1056 as professor of theology, became head of the school the following year, and remained there until 1074, when he was appointed chancellor of Rheims by its archbishop, Manasses. Bruno was forced to flee Rheims when he and several other priests denounced Manasses in 1076 as unfit for the office of Papal Legate. Bruno later returned to Cologne but went back to Rheims in 1080 when Manasses was deposed, and though the people of Rheims wanted to make Bruno archbishop, he decided to pursue an eremitical life. He became a hermit under bbot St. Robert of Molesmes (who later founded Citeaux) but then moved on to Grenoble with six companions in They were assigned a place for their hermitages in a desolate, mountainous, alpine area called La Grande Chartreuse, by Bishop St. Hugh of Grenoble, whose confessor Bruno became. They built an oratory and individual cells, roughly followed the rule of St. Benedict, and thus began the Carthusian Order. They embraced a life of poverty, manual work, prayer, and transcribing manuscripts, though as yet they had no written rule. The fame of the group and their founder spread, and in 1090, Bruno was brought to Rome, against his wishes, by Pope Urban II (whom he had taught at Rheims) as Papal dviser in the reformation of the clergy. Bruno persuaded Urban to allow him to resume his eremitical state, founded St. Mary s at La Torre in Calabria, declined the Pope s offer of the archbishopric of Reggio, became a close friend of Count Robert of Sicily, and remained there until his death on October 6. He wrote several commentaries on the psalms and on St. Paul s epistles. He was never formally canonized because of the Carthusians aversion to public honors but Pope Leo X granted the Carthusians permission to celebrate his feast in 1514, and his name was placed on the Roman calendar in His feast day is October

5 OCTOBER 1-2, 2016 PSTOR S RMBLINGS CTECHETICL SUNDY: We had a very nice turnout of catechists (photo, top) last Sunday at the 10:00 Mass. We are so blessed to have such great catechists who care so much about teaching the faith to others. 1 CONGRTULTIONS! Ella Coleman and Matt Schneider (photo, above left) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Sept. 17. Fr. Dan nderson O.F.M. was the presider. Chris Huth and my Cowden (photo, above right) were also married here on Sept. 17. Chris is the son of parishioners Chris and Mary Lou Huth. 1 TEXS BBQ: One of the means the priests of the parish supported the festival is by hosting a dinner people could bid on at the Bid-and-Buy. There were four dinners auctioned off. Each featured a different tradition of food. Fr. Dave Sunberg hosted a dinner at Jerry and Emily Davis s house. Jerry is from Texas, and they served a Texas barbecue meal. Special thanks to St. nthony parishioners Bill and Carol Schmidter who purchased the dinner for themselves and friends. Diners were also treated to music from Cody Egner and Fr. Jason. 1 ST. FRNCIS STTUE: We had to purchase a new St. Francis statue (photo, left). Our old statue had seen better days and was beyond repair. I found one at a statue shop in Milford. I m glad I was able to find one in time for our St. Francis pet blessing. 1 REST IN PECE: Jim Thaman s Mass of Christian Burial was on Mon., Sept.19. Jim (photo, left) was 88 years old and an alumnus of St. Cecilia s class of He was a regular at 4:00 Mass, and his presence there will be missed. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD. Welcome to the newly baptized: George William, son of Brian and Haley Sullivan (photo, below), and Bennett Isaac, son of Zachary and Victoria O Brien (photo, bottom). 5

6 SINT CECILI ROMN CTHOLIC PRISH STE WR DSHIP MON TH The month of October is dedicated to a renewal of our stewardship commitment to God through St. Cecilia Parish. How shall I make a return to the Lord, for all the good he has done for me? Psalm 116 This is about our response to the goodness of God that we have enjoyed, and how we will respond, how we have responded, how we are responding to God, for all His benefits toward us. The question in Psalm 116 is about our response to the goodness of God we have enjoyed. But, in our response to God s goodness, whatever we do, we never repay Him equally or in full, because we are imperfect responders to a perfect Giver! s we reflect on God s goodness and our imperfection, we become more and more aware that we need to respond to God s goodness; it is imperative to listen to Him and obey Him and trust His Son who died for us. One way is through obedient service. Either we are serving God or we re serving sin. We certainly are not doing both at the same time. When we consider all the vast blessings of God, both physical and spiritual our response should be obvious, I SHOULD BE SERVING HIM. This week we concentrate on our stewardship of prayer. When we devote time to prayer, we deepen our relationship with God and become better prepared to offer ourselves in service to God and others. Many of us approach prayer as a tool to use only when we want or need something from God, simply trying to process a business transaction. sk yourself, do I thank God more than I ask God for a deal? m I willing to make a commitment to prioritize prayer? Do I participate fully at Mass? Do I take time to read and contemplate the scriptures? Do I take advantage of the many parish devotions? The rosary? Holy Hour? Do I pray before meals? In the morning? Before bed? Do I listen to Him when he speaks to me? Do I thank God? Do I ask God what I can do to advance of His Kingdom? Let us pray that we will make stewardship of prayer a way of life with God. Because of our faith in You, O Lord, we acknowledge You as the source of all we have and all we are. Help us place You, our loving Creator, first in our lives by becoming more prayerful. Daily Mass We offer Mass every week day at 9 M here at St. Cecilia, but if you are ever unable to make it by 9, you now have a second option. We recently began celebrating an 11:45 M Mass on Monday through Friday at our regional sister parish St. Margaret-St. John, on Murray venue in Fairfax. Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Group ll are invited to pray the rosary for peace throughout our world. Every Wednesday from 1 2 PM in the last two pews of church. doration. Every Wednesday beginning at 9:30 M and concluding with HOLY HOUR, 7-8 PM. Volunteer Your God-Given Talents Stewardship involves sharing talent. God has given each individual unique skills and talents so that together we can do the work of our Lord. Put your faith and love into action. Volunteer for things that interest you. Build lasting friendships and become part of the family of Saint Cecilia Parish. Check the directory on page 2 or contact the parish office at , ext. 202, and we can put you in touch with the people with whom you should chat. God Speaks in Whispers We live in a loud world. Hearing God s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. But He is always there to guide and help us, and He has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer at , ext THE QUOTE OF THE WEEK The happiness you are seeking, the happiness you have a right to enjoy, has a name and a face: it is Jesus of Nazareth. 7 Prayer Intentions for the Week Please keep in prayer Geneva McPherron, Helen Phillips and Janet Mason that they may receive God s loving grace. Contact Barb Browarsky at the parish office, (513) , ext. 202, with Mass and sanctuary devotional candle intention requests. ll requests are honored for two weeks with the individual s or family s approval. Eucharistic Exposition dorers Needed Our wonderful Forty Hours Devotion has now come to an end for another year, but spending time with the Lord in Eucharistic adoration need not come to an end for you. Every Wednesday we are blessed to adore Jesus in Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:30 M to 8 PM. To insure this devotion will continue at our parish, we must know that someone will be in church with the Lord at all times. We have a pressing need for new adorers to step up and commit to a weekly time slot on Wednesdays. Prayerfully consider making a standing date with Jesus on a weekly basis. We also have an urgent need of substitute adorers to fill in as needed from time to time. Please call , ext. 243, to sign up. Fr. Jason s Path to the Priesthood s part of the Saint Margaret-Saint John dult Ministry, Fr. Jason Williams will discuss his vocational journey from submariner to priest. The talk will begin at 1 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the St. Francis meeting room of Saint Margaret-Saint John church. Come enjoy great stories, delicious refreshments, and the chance to meet other Catholics from our regional parishes. We hope to see you there!
