For Our Parishioners Second Collection: This Week: Campaign for Human Development ALL GOOD GIFTS Everyone has been given some gift or gifts by God. What differentiates us is the degree to which we use those gifts so they flourish and become of even greater use to those around us. INSIDE THE READINGS In today s first reading from the book of Proverbs, the expectations and behaviors of the ideal wife in the ancient Near East are described. Primarily, she is to bring honor to her husband, attend to the making of clothes for the family, and care for the poor and needy. Honor, care of family, and care of neighbor are hallmarks of the faithful Israelite, which Proverbs describes here in terms of a woman s duties. The concern to which Paul responds in his First Letter to the Thessalonians is best understood in light of eschatology, the end-times. Paul and the early Christians believed that Jesus return was imminent. That eschatological urgency drove the apostles and preachers to spread the word of repentance far and near. When Jesus returned he would judge the living and the dead and their actions would decide their fate. But a generation of believers was now dying, and Jesus had not returned. The Thessalonians rightly asked Paul When? to which he responds, When you least expect like a thief in the night. The eschatological anxiety leads to an eschatological urgency that should shape the actions of believers. Whereas the parable of the ten maidens in Matthew 25:1 13 spoke of preparation for the end-time, today s Gospel reading focuses on the in-between time. Jesus describes a situation in which a person has left his possessions in the hands of his servants and departed on a journey of unknown duration. Each servant is given responsibilities according to his or her abilities. Upon his return, the master evaluates how well each servant lived up to his or her responsibilities. To the first two, the master offers commendation: Well done, my good and faithful servant. However, the third servant failed in his task, resulting in condemnation, You wicked, lazy servant! Jesus summation For to everyone who has more will be given... but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away seems uncharacteristically harsh. But as Matthew is emphasizing to his community, entrance into the reign of heaven is not a guarantee for believers. Everyone is expected to prepare according to their ability. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Generous God, you bless us in many ways. Help me to multiply your gifts in your service as a sign of my gratitude. Where fear holds me back, give me courage and freedom to move ahead.

The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
