For Our Parishioners _ Second Collection Next Week: Parish Emergency Fund THE PROMISE OF LOVE Our covenant of love with God is our security and strength. May it also be the song that fills our hearts and lives each day. INSIDE THE READINGS The books of First and Second Samuel and First and Second Kings were edited by the hand of a historian, who stressed that Israel s exile had resulted from the poor religious and political leadership of its kings and the failure of the people to uphold the covenant. Very few kings stand as righteous under the critical eye of this writer. Solomon is an exception. In today s reading, Solomon acknowledges his limitations and asks God for help. And because Solomon asked not for the temporal trappings of power but for wisdom to rule God s people, God grants his request. I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now (1 Kings 3:12). Paul is writing to a community he has not met, but hopes will receive him well and financially support his ministry to Spain (Romans 15:24). He has carefully outlined his gospel as the fulfillment of scripture (Romans 1:1), and assured the Roman believers that their baptism into Christ is a baptism into his death and resurrection (Romans 6:3). In today s reading, Paul assures us that the purpose of God is being accomplished (Romans 8:28). Step by step, salvation is being worked out. First we are predestined, then called, then justified, and finally glorified. The series of three parables and concluding saying read in today s Gospel are unique to Matthew and shed light on the evangelist s understanding of discipleship. The first two (the parable of the buried treasure and the parable of the pearl of great price) make the same point. The discovery of something of unparalleled value requires the relinquishment of all one s possessions. In Matthew 19:21, this point is stated directly in relation to discipleship. Here it clearly refers to those who have found Jesus. The parable of the net thrown into the sea picks up the same theme as the parable of the weeds and wheat (Matthew 13:24 30). At the end of the age, the angels will separate the wicked from the righteous (Matthew 13:49). The concluding saying about the scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is often thought to be an autobiographical comment about the evangelist, who may have been a scribe himself. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Give me your wisdom, O God, to know right from wrong and to discover and live your will. Make me an instrument through whom the world hears and sings the music of your compassionate, merciful love.

Dehydration can occur quickly without any warning. Children are at greater risk than adults because their fluid volume is smaller and they weigh less. The smallest children are not able to communicate possible distress, so parents must be on the lookout for any signs that dehydration is near. If a child has diarrhea, vomits for more than eight hours, is irritable or disoriented, take immediate action. Give small amounts of water frequently. An over the counter supplement such as Pedialyte can also help. Ensuring children get enough water, especially during the hot summer months, will allow them to thrive and be safe. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
