Wingenter Req. by the Binette Family Second Collections: This Week: Retirement Fund for Religious Next Week: Christmas Flower Offering LIVING THE CONSECUTIVE NOW Even though we have no choice but to live here and now, we do have a choice as to how we will listen for and heed God s will for us in the here and now, and in the hereafter. INSIDE THE READINGS The first reading is from the book of the prophet Baruch, who also may have served as Jeremiah s scribe or secretary. Along with Jeremiah, Baruch is taken to Egypt. However, when the book of Baruch opens, the scribe turned prophet is now in Babylon. The final form of the book may be dated as late as the second century B.C. and is composed of four sections: the letter to Jerusalem, praise of Wisdom, Baruch s poem of consolation, and a letter of Jeremiah. Today s first reading is part of Baruch s poem of consolation, in which he encourages the mourning city of Jerusalem, echoing the language of Second Isaiah. The overall tone of Paul s Letter to the Philippians is that of joy. In today s reading, Paul prays with joy because the Philippians have partnered with Paul in the gospel. This partnership, or koinonia in the Greek, is demonstrated by a shared suffering with Paul and a participation in the Spirit. But koinonia can also mean contribution, and it may be that Paul is particularly pleased by their generosity. The Gospel reading introduces John the Baptist by situating his ministry within political temporal markers. The fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius can be reckoned between A.D. 27 and 29. Pontius Pilate was prefect of Judea from A.D. 26 to 36. Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, was the tetrarch (leader of a quarter) of Galilee and Perea from 4 B.C. to 39 A.D., and his brother Philip had the same title and ruled over regions north and east of the Sea of Galilee from 4 B.C. to 34 A.D. Luke also refers to the temple priesthood (though Annas and his son-inlaw Caiaphas were not both high priests at the same time). Unlike the other evangelists, Luke presents John as having been called by God ( the word of God came to John ), but similar to the other Gospel writers, John will remain only a prophetic messenger who proclaims a baptism of repentance and recognizes that one mightier than I is coming. RESPONDING IN PRAYER God of all times and ages, you make mountains low, straighten crooked paths, and smooth ways that are rough. Help me to receive your Word today and live in ways that prepare the way for your Son, Jesus Christ, today, this Advent, and every day of life that you give me.

4 NURSES CORNER December, 2018 Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8 The holidays are supposed to be joyful so people who experience great sadness and depression often will not share their true feelings with others. Those who might have the holiday blues include parents whose children no longer live at home, seniors who are widowed or have lost many of their friends, and any person who is separated from family and friends. These losses and separations take the joy out of their holidays. To give them back some enjoyment, include them in your activities, encourage them to get involved in church and acknowledge their feelings and losses. Support them when they are blue. VISITS TO THE SICK If you would like to have one of our priests or deacon visit a relative or friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or home, please call the parish office at MASS INTENTIONS If you have requested a Mass Intention and you and your family would like to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at Offertory time, please check in with one of the ushers when you arrive at church. They will do their best to be sure you are able to participate in this special way at the mass for your loved one(s). THANK YOU The Outreach Committee would like to thank the parish for the successful Veterans Drive. We collected $390 grocery gift card and many boxes of toiletries and clothing items. Thank you for your kindness and generosity towards our veterans in need!!! COFFEE HOUR Our next coffee hour will be on December 16th and will be hosted by the Men s Group. Please join us in McKeon Hall after the 9:30am Mass for some holiday cheer. If you would like to host a coffee hour in the future, please call Mary Hynes. (203) The following dates are still available: January 27th and February 24th. SAVE THE DATE The Saint Elizabeth Seton Family Dinner will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 after the 5:00pm Mass. All are welcome and we hope to see you all there. PAC The Parish Advisory Council will meet this Tuesday, December 11th at 7:30pm in the Parish Center. LECTOR MEETING All parishioners who are currently serving in the Lector ministry are scheduled to meet on Wednesday, December 12th in the church at 7pm. This meeting is being held to update our lectors on the revisions to the liturgical norms. PARISH MEMBERSHIP If you are not already a parishioner here at St. Elizabeth Seton, we invite you to join our parish family. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8). For more information about vocations to the priesthood and diaconate, please visit
