INSIDE THE READINGS The first reading narrates the Holy Spirit s endorsement of the Gentile mission. Peter has been summoned to preach in the house of a Gentile centurion who is introduced as a devout godfearer (10:1 2). In a vision, Peter had been told that God had made all food clean, indicating that those who did not partake of the kosher diet were nonetheless welcomed by God (10:9 16). In truth, I see that God shows no partiality, he announces to Cornelius and those gathered. As Peter speaks, the Holy Spirit falls upon all listening. The circumcised believers are astounded that the Gentiles too were to share in the same Spirit, thus bringing to fruition the prophecy of Simeon. A light of revelation had been revealed to the Gentiles (Luke 2:32). In 1 John 4:7 10, the word love (agape in the Greek) appears ten times in these four verses, suggesting that the reading served as a brief homily on John 3:16: God so loved the world. The author urges his community to love each other, since God is the embodiment of love, so that by loving, one demonstrates that he or she has been begotten by God. The particular type of love that is called for is exemplified by God, whose Son was sacrificed in reparation for our sins. Agape is love demonstrated by personal sacrifice for the sake of the other, and will become a defining Christian virtue. In the Gospel, Jesus explains that the source of this self- sacrificing love is the Father, whose love Jesus now shares with the disciples. John 15 is part of a long discourse in which Jesus, anticipating his departure (14:1 4), provides directions for his disciples. In today s reading, the disciples are to remain in the love of Jesus, and keep his commandments, in order to experience complete joy. If they do so, the disciples are no longer servants. Jesus calls them friends. In the Greco-roman context, there were several types of friendship, including hoststranger, political, and patron-client. Jesus specifies that his friendship is characterized by the presence of agape. No one has greater love than this: to lay down one s life for one s friends (15:13). RESPONDING IN PRAYER God of love, teach us how to love well and truly by following the example of love that you have shown to us in Jesus.

4 NURSES CORNER May, 2018 Let Christ be in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace (Colossians 3:15) May is a beautiful time of the year. But, it can also be filled with an abundance of events, from Baptisms to Weddings, and everything in between. Over scheduling may cause stress. We may also have stress in our relationships, finances, or due to the ill health of ourselves and/or our loved ones. You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. (Isaiah 6:3) Stress isn t the distance we pedal as much as it is distance between what we value and what we do. Our faith can help us to creatively live with our values rather than in opposition to them. You can best handle stress by embracing the present. Avoid obsessing on what needs to be done next or what went wrong yesterday. Use God s perspective in judging which situations require strength and which call upon us to ride the waves of life. It s like working at a very busy restaurant. We arrive about 1:30 p.m. and begin preparing the meal; bagging sandwiches usually provided by our Confirmation class - and setting the tables. Guests arrive at 3:15 and are seated. From then till about 5:00 p.m. it s busy and lots of fun. Some guests are homeless, some unable to afford meals, and most are grateful for the help we give them. We invite you to think about volunteering a sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the vestibule in the back of church. Our next day of service is Sunday, May 13, You can spend an hour or stay for the whole time. GOLF OUTING The Annual St. Elizabeth Seton Golf Outing will be held on Monday, June 11, Please join us, it is sure to be another great event. You can find a registration form on our website at sesparish.org or contact Steve O Hara for more information VACATION BIBLE CAMP Vacation Bible Camp will be held Monday, August 6 Friday August 10th for our parishioners in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Registration forms can be found in the back of the church or on our website. Volunteers are needed to make this a successful event. If you can help in any way please pick up a volunteer form in the back of the church or contact Ellen Adamski ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Education is the gift of a lifetime. Donations to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable inner-city youth to become faith-filled, industrious, responsible and well educated adults. Our world and the Church need these young students to excel academically and to develop a strong and active faith in God. Thus far, Saint Elizabeth Seton parish has raised 220 gifts worth $106,219 from 197 donors bringing the parish to % of its $105,000 goal. Thank you for your generosity.

The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
