DeGhetto Req. by The Matthews Family ADMIT ONE It s not easy to admit our sinfulness and shortcomings; but with Isaiah, Paul, and Peter, when we do so we also open our lives to the saving, merciful grace of God. INSIDE THE READINGS Isaiah of Jerusalem narrates his prophetic call in today s first reading. The fantastic description of the high and lofty throne and seraphim stationed above may reflect the actual interior of the holy of holies in the temple, where God was thought to dwell. To this terrifying vision, Isaiah is right to proclaim his unworthiness: Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people with unclean lips (Isaiah 6:5). The belief that beholding the glory of God would lead to one s death (Exodus 33:20) may be why Isaiah considered himself doomed. He is purified by an ember from the altar and made clean. Now purified, Isaiah is privileged to hear the voice of God asking, Whom shall I send? Isaiah responds without hesitation, Here I am... send me. Paul of Tarsus shares in common with Isaiah of Jerusalem recognition of his unworthiness. In today s second reading, Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel that he has been given and that he faithfully passes on to them: Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared to witnesses. Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me. For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. Isaiah is cleansed by a burning ember and Paul by the grace of God. The reading from today s Gospel is also a call story similar to that of Isaiah and of Paul. Ordinarily a call story possesses the following elements: invitation, expression of unworthiness on the part of the invitee, reassurance, and commission. Jesus chooses Simon s boat to serve as a platform for his preaching. After teaching the crowds on the shore, Jesus invites Simon to put out into deep water and lower the nets. With some hesitation, Simon lowers his nets and is astounded by the catch. Simon recognizes that he is in the presence of a holy man: Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man. Jesus reassures him, Do not be afraid, and commissions him. The experience has an effect not only on Simon, but also on James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They all leave their boats on the shore and follow Jesus. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Merciful God, thank you for your generous mercy. Help me proclaim your merciful love to those I meet.

4 The 2019 Mass book is open. If there is someone special you would like to offer a Mass for, either living or deceased, please stop in, call or the office to request your date. There is a $10 Mass stipend for each date reserved. Daily Masses and Sunday Masses are available. Masses can be offered for repose of a soul, healing, a birthday, anniversary or special intention. If you have requested a Mass Intention and you and your family would like to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at Offertory time, please check in with one of the ushers when you arrive at church. They will do their best to be sure you are able to participate in this special way at the mass for your loved one(s). VISITS TO THE SICK If you would like to have one of our priests or deacon visit a relative or friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or home, please call the parish office at NURSES CORNER February, 2019 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. ~Proverbs 3:24 Sleep is essential for your well-being. It is necessary for the body to recharge its batteries, heal its wounds, and regroup for another day. We all need a slightly different amount of sleep, but we all need good quality rest. This means deep, uninterrupted sleep of at least 6 hours for adults, but preferably 8, and even more for children and teenagers. Without the right amount of sleep, we become short-tempered, quick to anger, and make poor decisions. Remember to say a bedtime prayer to set the stage for a long and deep sleep. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ~Matthew 11:28. TAX STATEMENTS The 2018 tax statements have been mailed out to all registered families who contributed to the parish in If you do not receive a tax statement and would like one, please call the parish office at BAPTISM CLASS Our next Baptism Class will be held March 17, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Office. Classes are held prior to the Baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born. Please call the office to register. It s like working at a very busy restaurant. We arrive about 1:30 p.m. and begin preparing the meal; bagging sandwiches usually provided by our Confirmation class - and setting the tables. Guests arrive at 3:15 and are seated. From then till about 5:00 p.m. it s busy and lots of fun. Some guests are homeless, some unable to afford meals, and most are grateful for the help we give them. We invite you to think about volunteering a sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the vestibule in the back of church. Our next day of service is Sunday, February 10, You can spend an hour or stay for the whole time. In and Aound The Diocese Family Bible Challenge Bishop Caggiano has announced The Family Bible Challenge and is looking for 1,000 families to join him in engaging with the Scripture this Lent. Every family will receive up to two Bibles, a weekly passage to read and reflect upon as a family, and an invitation to play online trivia each week. Holy Land Pilgrimage Spend some time in 2019 walking in the footsteps of Jesus by joining the diocesan pilgrimage to the Holy Land from July 18-27, Study Sacred Scripture at the famed Ecole biblique in Jerusalem and travel chronologically through the life of Christ. This is an annual international conference for the youth, run by the youth. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
