For Our Parishioners A REAL RESURRECTION Every Sunday we profess that we believe in the resurrection of the body because we believe that it was the fully human, fully divine Jesus who was raised from the dead. INSIDE THE READINGS In acts Chapter 3, Peter and John are going to the temple to pray when they encounter a crippled beggar. In the name of Jesus Christ, Peter commands the man to rise and walk, and taking him by the right hand, he raises him up. As this man clings to Peter and John in Solomon s Portico (an area where rabbis would preach publicly; see John 10:23), Peter begins a speech directed at those who have also come to the temple to pray. He begins by identifying the God of Israel (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the fathers) as the same God who has glorified Jesus, the author of life you put to death (3:15). The speech is not designed to condemn but, rather, to offer forgiveness. Peter recognizes that their actions resulted from ignorance and offers them an opportunity for repentance. Throughout the Acts of the Apostles, the Jews and their leadership will receive this same offer (13:14; 17:2). Though some Jews join the Christian movement (13:43; 17:4), most do not (17:5; 28:28). First John purports to be a letter, but is actually a sermon in letter format, designed to encourage members of the community. Today s second reading shares similar vocabulary with the Gospel of John, demonstrating that the themes of the Gospel of John continued to be of concern for the next generation of believers. The Gospel of Luke concludes with a series of Resurrection appearances. First, a couple returning from Jerusalem encounter a stranger whom they recognize as the Lord only in hindsight (24:13 33). When they report back to those in Jerusalem, they learn that Peter has also seen the risen Lord, though this encounter is not narrated (24:34). Finally, in today s Gospel, Jesus appears to the gathered community. Appropriately, they think they are seeing a ghost (24:37). To counter their fears and demonstrate that the resurrected body is indeed physical, he asks for food and eats it (24:41 43). As he did with the couple on their way to Emmaus, Jesus opened their minds to understand the scriptures (24:45), so that they might continue his mission that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name (24:47). RESPONDING IN PRAYER Risen Lord, be present among us as the author of life who has conquered death. Give us confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

4 NURSES CORNER April, 2017 May our Risen Lord bless your days with peace and joy! During this Easter Season, we should give special thanks to the Lord for giving us these great vessels of life, our bodies. We have an obligation to treat them as the greatest of gifts from the Lord. April is Cancer Control Month. Everyone has lost someone close to them from this dreaded disease. More and more, it is evident that we can beat back our cancer risk by simply changing our diets to include more fiber and less animal fat, by getting a bit of exercise, and of course, by quitting smoking. in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:37) 2019 Mass Book The 2019 Mass book is now open for anyone who wishes to schedule a mass for a special intention or a deceased friend or family member. Mass Intentions If you have requested a Mass Intention and you and your family would like to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at Offertory time, please check in with one of the ushers when you arrive at church. They will do their best to be sure you are able to participate in this special way at the mass for your loved one(s). VISITS TO THE SICK If you would like to have one of our priests or deacon visit a relative or friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office at LITTLE FLOWERS The Little Flowers of Ridgefield is seeking new members-- girls ages 5-12 yrs old who wish to grow in love of God and virtue. Ours is a badgebased program similar to scouts but 100% Catholic in identity. Badge work and projects include various types of prayers and spiritual disciplines, works of service, educational activities, arts and crafts, and more. Meetings are anchored in scripture, biographies of saints, and the Catechism and are always lively and fun! Interested girls and their moms are invited to a meet & greet with current Little Flowers to hear more about what we do on Sunday, May 6th at 3pm. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL For over 100 years, Catholic Charities of Fairfield County has mobilized a philosophy of faith in action to provide a broad spectrum of social services to the extended Fairfield County community. The agency serves the needy through more than 30 service ministries that include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless and homebound, strengthening families and individuals, and assisting those on the road to immigration documentation. But Catholic Charities can t do it alone. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
