For Our Parishioners Second Collections This Week: Parish Emergency Fund Next Week: Mission Co-op FAITHFULNESS AND SUCCESS When it comes to speaking and spreading God s word in the world, the faithful service must be ours, so that the success may be given to God. INSIDE THE READINGS As the Gospel reading will acknowledge, a prophet is not without honor except in his native place (Mark 6:4). In today s first reading, God warns the prophet Ezekiel similarly. The Israelites, to whom Ezekiel is sent, are hard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4), which is why many of them now sit in exile, while far away the city of Jerusalem is about to be destroyed. As Ezekiel chapter 2 continues, God tells Ezekiel not to be afraid even though he will sit among briers, thorns, and scorpions (Ezekiel 2:6). Regardless of the Israelites response and the personal suffering that ensues, the prophet must speak God s words. In the reading from Second Corinthians, Paul describes some of the sufferings that he endures while proclaiming God s word (weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, constraints). An illness plagues Paul for which he begs God s intercession. Some scholars propose that Paul may have had problems with his eyes, which he mentions in Galatians 4: The Lord reveals to Paul, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Through Paul s physical limitations, God s power is made manifest. The theme of power through weakness is repeated throughout Paul s letters. Previous to today s Gospel reading, Jesus had performed a double healing (the woman with the hemorrhage and the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus [Mark 5:21 43]). Now he returns to his hometown of Nazareth. As he teaches in the synagogue, the listeners are astonished by his wisdom and the mighty deeds that he has performed. And yet they take offense, since they think they know him. The detractors call Jesus the son of Mary. Ordinarily, a man was identified according to his father s lineage, so one would expect the son of Joseph. Either those gathered are making a slur about Jesus parentage, or at this point in Jesus life Joseph has died. Jesus brothers are identified, and his sisters mentioned. Because of the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary, it has been suggested that these brothers and sisters are the children of Joseph from a previous marriage, or that perhaps the word for brothers/sisters (adelphoi/ adelphai) as it is used here refers to cousins or other near relatives. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Holy Spirit of God, you are with us in our successes and in our failures. Help us to remain aware of your presence always, and keep us faithful to the life to which God has called us..

The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8). For more information about vocations to the priesthood and diaconate, please visit
