For Our Parishioners Second Collections: This Week: Parish Emergency Fund Next Week: Retirement Fund for The Religious ON THE LOOKOUT Some think God comes only in dramatic ways, others in quiet ways. One thing is certain the final decision is up to God. Our duty is to be on the lookout. INSIDE THE READINGS The prophet known as Third Isaiah is responsible for the last ten chapters of the book of Isaiah. Today s reading evidences the ambivalence among the post-exilic community as they attempt to become a new creation (Isaiah 65:17). They recognize God as father, our redeemer... named forever and at the same time there is none who call upon your name. This section is part of a psalm of lament found in Isaiah 63:7 64:11. It follows a pattern: first recalling God s mighty deeds (Isaiah 63:7 14), and then lodging a complaint and request for aid (Isaiah 63:15 64:11). In our verses, the prophet voices the desire for God s help while acknowledging the sinfulness of the people. The reading ends on a hopeful note: we are all the work of your hands. Paul has a complicated relationship with the Corinthians, with whom he shared a lengthy correspondence. In addition to the canonical First Corinthians, Paul wrote at least one letter no longer extant but mentioned in 1 Corinthians 5:9. In 1 Corinthians 7:1, Paul responded to a letter sent to him from the Corinthians, concerning various questions of decorum. The letter known as Second Corinthians may be as many as five letter fragments edited together later. In today s reading, Paul is offering thanks to God for the grace and spiritual gifts received by the community. Those gifts, as the letter will discuss later, have become a source of rivalry among them. The Gospel reading is taken from Mark, chapter 13, known as the Little Apocalypse (the book of Revelation being the big one!). Apocalyptic literature depicted the end of the current evil age and the often violent in-breaking of God s reign. Using coded language and vivid metaphors, apocalyptic writing dramatically prepared its readers for this cataclysmic event. As Jesus addresses his disciples, he warns them, Be watchful! Be alert! for no one knows when this final consummation will occur. Within Mark s own community, the evangelist is likely trying to explain the delay of the parousia (Jesus second coming), which would signal the beginning of the end. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Potter God, open our eyes to see you in our midst. Fill us with your Holy Spirit. Help us place our lives into your hands, and shape us into vessels that help all people see the face of your Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Christmas season can be a mixture of feelings, especially if you are grieving the loss of a loved one. Celebrations take on different meanings as you work through the emotions of grief. Do you attend every party you are invited to? Do you decorate your home the same as before the death of a love one? Do you maintain family traditions, or create new ones? Whether the loss is recent or old, you have to determine what kind of celebration or remembrance is right for you. This event will include Angels of all ages and live animals. Please mark your calendars and join us for this special event. All Middle School and High School parishioners are welcome to participate. For more information, call Dennis & Jane Lamondy at or visit them at DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY In a letter to the U.S. Senate, the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops (USCCB) urged the Senate to respect life when changing the health care mandate. The USCCB says no health care reform plan should compel us or others to pay for the destruction of human life, whether through government funding or mandatory coverage of abortion. Long-standing Hyde Amendment protections must extend to any relevant health care plan in order to prevent federal funding of abortion and not as a temporary fix or future promise.

The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
