As the church did from the beginning, we need to keep the Lord near. INSIDE THE READINGS Though Luke presents an idyllic picture of the early church gathered in prayer and sharing all things in common, very shortly the community experienced growing pains. In today s first reading, we hear about a conflict brewing between the Palestinian Aramaicspeaking Jewish Christians and the Hellenistic Greekspeaking Jewish Christians. While the stated problem concerns the widows, likely they are only an example of the various difficulties that arose as the gospel was proclaimed in different cultures. As Acts explains, the answer to the problem was to appoint more servants to assist the Twelve in their ministry. Two of those chosen Stephen and Philip will be instrumental in the gospel s spread outside of Jerusalem. The author of First Peter uses metaphors and images common to the experience of his readers, who are newborn infants in the faith. Christ is the cornerstone of their faith and is foundational to their spiritual life. By virtue of his resurrection, he is a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God. Believers are themselves to become like living stones and serve as a holy priesthood. The titles once reserved for Israel are now granted to the faithful in Christ who are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own. In today s Gospel reading from John, Jesus assures his disciples that in his Father s house, there are many dwelling places. Here John is combining two important themes found throughout his Gospel: that of house and to dwell. House is a frequent word in the Gospel. In today s reading, the image of a house with plenty of space for resting resembles a typical Roman atrium house with many cubicles. The front door opened to the street and allowed visible access to the interior. A householder wanted his or her status visible to those who passed by. Clients came and went. Only the family members remained. The Greek word for to dwell (also abide, stay, remain ) is meno and becomes the designation and destination for a true disciple. The disciple is called to dwell in Jesus. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Jesus, the stone rejected by the builders, you are our foundation. Refresh your life within us each day, so that we might give you flesh, and others may see you and know your way today.

As women live longer, their risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and depression increases. Regular monitoring will diagnose these issues before a concern becomes severe or debilitating. It is equally important to maintain healthy relationships with family and friends to prevent issues of depression or social isolation. Attend activities at a senior center, join a bowling league, or find an activity that provides both exercise and socialization. Stay healthy and productive by staying active, listening to your body s signals, and visiting your doctor. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
