For Our Parishioners SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY How can we imitate God? By setting as our standard God s boundless, loving, generous nature, which calls us always to a higher place. INSIDE THE READINGS Though the prophet Elijah has just successfully destroyed the prophets of Ba al in the northern kingdom of Israel, he has had to flee the wrath of Jezebel, the queen. Despondent, Elijah travels into the wilderness, where under a broom tree, he prays for death. Twice a messenger commands him to get up and eat food that has miraculously appeared (1 Kings 19:5, 7). Only on the second occasion is the messenger identified as the angel of the Lord. Elijah heeds the words and travels for forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb, also known as Sinai. The reader can anticipate that a theophany (divine encounter) will await Elijah there, since Horeb/Sinai is where Moses encountered God. In the passages leading up to today s second reading, the believers are called to a higher moral standard, refraining from falsehood, avoiding sin, and leaving no room for the devil. Today, the believers are warned not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). Whereas the previous sins listed were against others, Do not grieve the Holy Spirit is a sin against God. This Spirit seals the believer for the day of redemption. Therefore, the believers are to live an exemplary life marked by compassion and forgiveness. By so doing, they will truly be imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1). The Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John functions much as the Last Supper does in the Synoptic Gospels. It presents Jesus as the life-giving bread who has come down from heaven. Though the Jewish leadership questions Jesus origin ( Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, I have come down from heaven? [John 6:42] ), the reader knows exactly from whence Jesus comes ( In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God... and the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, [John 1:1, 14]). The manna offered to the Israelites only sustained them so long. But the bread from heaven provides eternal life. Jesus now turns more directly to the Eucharistic theme, acknowledging that he is the living bread, and that bread is his flesh given for the life of the world (John 6:51). RESPONDING IN PRAYER Gracious God, you have given us everything that we have and are, and you ask nothing in return except that we embrace your generosity. Help us to imitate your generosity every day.

4 NURSES CORNER August, 2018 I am in pain and distress; may your salvation, O God, protect me. Psalms 69 One size does not fit all. The Arthritis Foundation reports that research begun in the 1980s shows physiological differences between men and women result in different illness tendencies. Women tend to develop osteoarthritis 10 years later than a man while men with rheumatoid arthritis or lupus tend to suffer more severely than many women with those conditions. These findings show a link between hormone levels and autoimmune diseases, but more research is needed to determine why and how estrogen and testosterone cause or prevent immune disorders. Wednesday, August 15th is a Holy Day of Obligation. Please join us as we celebrate Mass dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Masses will be held Tuesday evening at 7:30pm and on Wednesday at 8:30am, 12:00pm and 7:30pm. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY This year the Women's Bible Study Group will be offering a Walking With Purpose study, "Touching the Divine". This study aims to bring women to a closer relationship with Christ using the bible and study guides. We will start with a coffee on Thursday, September 13th and continue for 26 weeks (no holidays or school vacation times). We meet in McKeon Hall at 9:30AM for two hours. Please call Anita Morris at (cel) or (home) or Deb Varnerin at OFFICE HOURS The Parish Office will be open 9am-12pm Monday through Friday during the months of July and August. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8). For more information about vocations to the priesthood and diaconate, please visit
