For Our Parishioners Second Collections This Week: Catholic Relief Services and Aid to Church in Central and Eastern Europe Next Week: Parish Emergency Fund A MORE PRECIOUS VISION As our Lenten journey progresses, we strive to improve the manner in which we see with our hearts, hoping that, in the light of Christ, we can truly come to see the world as God does. INSIDE THE READINGS Prior to our first reading, Saul had been anointed king at the behest of the people, but he fails carry out God s commands, and God rejects him as king. Instead the prophet Samuel is sent to a family in Bethlehem to anoint a new king from among the sons of Jesse. The motif of younger son surpassing the elder plays out in this narrative as well. The last and youngest son, who is not even named until the end, proves to be the chosen one of God. For not as humanity sees does God see, for God looks into the heart. The second reading from Ephesians uses the metaphor of light and darkness as a measurement of righteousness. Prior to their belief in Christ, the Ephesians dwelt in darkness, likely referring to their Gentile and polytheistic practices. But now they are to live as children of the light, producing goodness, righteousness, and truth. The passage concludes with a stanza from an early Christian hymn, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. The Gospel reading describes an encounter between Jesus, a blind man, and the Pharisees, which culminates in the answer to the disciples question, Who sinned? In the ancient world, sickness was believed to be the manifestation of sin. In the case of the man born blind, the likely culprits would be the man s parents (John 9:2). But Jesus counters that not all sickness derives from sin, and in fact in this case, the man s blindness will lead not only to physical sight but spiritual vision as well (John 9:3). As the narrative continues, it becomes apparent that the man sees Jesus as a prophet (John 9:17) and recognizes him as a man from God (John 9:33), while the Pharisees remain blinded by their failure to recognize Jesus true identity. If you were blind, you would have no sin, but now you are saying, We see, so your sin remains (John 9:41). The disciples question is answered. The sin of the Pharisees remains because they are confident in their own righteousness. RESPONDING IN PRAYER Jesus, who heals all ills, open my eyes to see as you see. Fill me with your light so that I choose to see your goodness in others, the world, and myself. Heal the self-righteousness that keeps me blind.

4 NURSES CORNER March, 2017 The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me. Job 30:27 Many people think allergens, the substances that cause irritation, are limited to poison ivy or animals when many things can cause a reaction. Common culprits include: honey, peanuts, wheat products, strawberries, perfume, scented candles, mold, latex rubber (balloons, gloves), grass, soaps, or even medications. To help others, know that the cologne you are wearing could bother asthmatics. Label your food dish if it contains allergens like peanuts or shellfish. Take non-latex balloons to the party. Little steps like these can go a long way to prevent someone s discomfort. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
