For Our Parishioners Second Collections: This Week: Easter Offering Next Week: Parish Emergency Fund NEW HEAVENS, NEW EARTH We believe that in raising Jesus from the dead, God did something truly new both on earth and in heaven. We continue to seek and to live this newness every day. INSIDE THE READINGS In the first reading, Peter proclaims the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to the Gentile centurion Cornelius and his household. Earlier, at the urgings of an angel, Cornelius had sent for Peter in order that he might hear the word of God. Now standing in the home of a Gentile, Peter summarizes the narrative details of the Gospel of Luke. While Peter is preaching, the Holy Spirit descends upon the Gentiles (10:44), and they too will be baptized (10:47 48). Most scholars see the baptism of Cornelius and his family as the beginning of the Gentile mission. The Letter to the Colossians explains to its readers that by virtue of their baptism, they have been buried with Christ (2:12) only to be raised alive with him by God (2:13). This new status warrants different behavior. No longer should the Colossians be concerned about food or drink or festivals (2:16). Rather they are to seek what is above (3:2), where Christ dwells, since they have now become one with Christ. The first reading provides a review of the life and death of Jesus, while the second explains that our participation in Christ and his resurrection requires a reorientation of priorities. But as the Gospel describes, those who first experienced the empty tomb were far from such clarity. Mary comes to the tomb early in the morning while it is still dark (20:1). When she finds the burial stone rolled away, she runs to Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved (he is never named in the Gospel), announcing that someone has taken the body. Peter and the other disciple run to the tomb and discover the burial linens lying there, but the body of Jesus is indeed gone. The evangelist explains that they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead (John 20:9). It would take personal encounters with the resurrected Jesus before the disciples would come to insight. Mary meets Jesus and mistakes him for the gardener (20:11 18); Jesus appears to the eleven who are hiding behind a locked door (20:19 24), and Thomas will need to touch the wounds before Jesus resurrection is real to him (20:26 28). RESPONDING IN PRAYER We thank you, O God, for the gift of new life that you have bestowed on us through the resurrection of your son. Send your spirit upon us, that we may always seek those things that are above.

4 NURSES CORNER April, 2017 For I am like a tree whose roots reach the water, whose branches are refreshed with the dew. Job 29:19 When you are stressed, do you find nature helpful? These benefits are used in many public and private gardens to promote mental and spiritual healing for patients with chronic disease, cancer, or mental illness. For example, a park bench alongside flowing water encourages one to sit down, contemplate their situation, or meditate to achieve peace. The respite and hope this creates, decreases one s stress levels, lowers the blood pressure, and eases the pain of grief. Whether you want to enjoy a pretty place, lower blood pressure, or gain solitude when grieving, gardens will offer you peace, renewal, and hope if you take the time Mass Book The 2019 Mass book is now open for anyone who wishes to schedule a mass for a special intention or a deceased friend or family member. Mass Intentions If you have requested a Mass Intention and you and your family would like to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at Offertory time, please check in with one of the ushers when you arrive at church. They will do their best to be sure you are able to participate in this special way at the mass for your loved one(s). The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
