For Our Parishioners Second Collections Next Week: Church in Latin America EXTRAORDINARY WINES IN ORDINARY TIME By making an extraordinary wine for a wedding, Jesus demonstrates how we, as baptized members of his Body the church are made extraordinary by his grace for the heavenly feast. The first sign Jesus performs in John s Gospel is changing water into wine. Hesitant at first, he not only performs the sign, he also creates the best wine of the wedding feast. Thus Jesus begins to fulfill the promises we hear from the prophet Isaiah. INSIDE THE READINGS On first reading, the passage from Isaiah appears redundant. For Zion s sake, I will not be silent, for Jerusalem s sake I will not be quiet (Isaiah 62:1). This method, common to Hebrew poetry, is known as synonymous parallelism, in which the second line essentially repeats the meaning of the first. Antithetic parallelism occurs when the second line is the opposite of the first. In synthetic parallelism, one line might be a comparison to the other and help advance the thought. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you (Isaiah 62:5). Parallelism can strengthen a particular point (synonymous), contrast ideas (antithetic), or advance understanding (synthetic). In his Letter to the Corinthians, Paul uses a slightly different type of parallelism to underscore the gifts of the Spirit. The Corinthians appear to have been arguing over who possessed the best spiritual gift. Paul answers that though different in manifestation, all gifts are granted by the same Spirit for the good of the community (1 Corinthians 14:12). Though Paul uses the metaphor of the parts of the body to indicate the value of each individual (1 Corinthians 12:12 26), he nevertheless highlights prophecy as a chief spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 14:1). The Gospel reading from John presents a hesitant Jesus, who though urged by his mother (John never uses her name) is reluctant to perform a sign. Jesus doesn t perform miracles in the Gospel of John; rather, he demonstrates signs. The turning of water into wine becomes the first of seven signs in the Gospel that point to Jesus true identity. Jesus informs his mother that his hour has not yet come (John 2:4), a circumlocution for the moment that Jesus begins his glorification. Scholars propose that the largest section of the Gospel of John can be divided into the book of Signs (Chapters 1:19 12:50) and the book of Glory (Chapters 13:1 20:29). PRIME TIMERS: A fellowship group of men and women who have the time and desire to come together on weekdays for social and service events. 4 NURSES CORNER January, 2019 a land that the Lord your God cares for. He watches over it through each season of the year! -Deuteronomy 11:12 You make sure your car gets regular maintenance, so you can get to work on time, shuttle your children from one activity to the next, or go on vacation, so why don t you do the same for your body? God gave us one body and expects us to keep it as healthy and strong as possible. The best way to do that is getting yearly physicals, and never ignoring warning signs such as shortness of breath, changes in the color of a mole, or a lump anywhere on your body. Visit your doctor and have appropriate screenings to find the problem and get it treated. Don t wait! The 2019 Mass book is open. If there is someone special you would like to offer a Mass for, either living or deceased, please call or the office to request your date. There is a $10 Mass stipend for each date reserved. Daily Masses and Sunday Masses are available. Masses can be offered for repose of a soul, healing, a birthday, anniversary or special intention. If you have requested a Mass Intention and you and your family would like to bring up the gifts of bread and wine at Offertory time, please check in with one of the ushers when you arrive at church. They will do their best to be sure you are able to participate in this special way at the mass for your loved one(s). VISITS TO THE SICK If you would like to have one of our priests or deacon visit a relative or friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or home, please call the parish office at TAX STATEMENTS 2018 tax statements will be mailed out this month to all registered families who contributed to the parish in If you do not receive a tax statement and would like one, please call the parish office at PARISH OFFICE The Parish office will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday on Monday January 21st. The SES Music Ministry is searching for Ringers and Singers! Surely there is undiscovered talent sitting in our pews! We are looking to add more bodies to our already vibrant ministry. Handbell Choir: This group rehearses on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm and plays approximately once monthly at the 8am Mass. While some musical experience is helpful, it is not necessary. We will train anyone who is interested. We are looking to add at least 3 new members. Contemporary Choir: Our Contemporary Choir rehearses on Monday evenings from 8:00-9:00pm and sings weekly at the 9:30am Mass. Previous musical experience is not necessary. Come with a smile and a pencil! Adult Choir: This choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00pm and sings weekly at the 11:30 mass. While all are welcome, we are particularly looking for women and more specifically sopranos (melody singers, usually). Musical experience is not necessary. Ideally, we'd like to add 3 more voices to each section. Celebration Choir: This is a group that comes together for special liturgical feasts as well as important parish functions. If you feel you can only commit to sing a few times a year, this is your chance. Please make yourself known and add your name to the list so you can be contacted when it's time to begin preparation. Instrumentalists: Do you play an instrument in your basement with no one listening? Now's your chance to let your light shine! Let us know and we'll use you wherever we can! The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office, learn more about, and participate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faithcommunity may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register. Eucharist Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be received daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request. Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God s boundless mercy. Time for confession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Joseph s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury. Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilitation facility, or at home, please call the parish office. Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. Attendance at the Diocesan Marriage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandatory. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning. Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood respond generously to God s call using the words of the prophet, here I am, send me (Is 6:8).
