4 Dear Parishioners, Today, Sunday, October 7 th, is Respect Life Sunday. We are to respect the lives of others since we are all children of God given the gifts of spiritual and physical life. In the second reading from Hebrews St. Paul reminds us that we all have one origin and that Christ was made lower than the angels so that he might taste death for everyone. The physical source of our lives is from our parents and today readings speak to us about God s plans for our parents. In the Book of Genesis we are given the story of the creation of man and woman (Adam and Eve) and man and woman will leave their parents and they in turn become one flesh as the parents of their children. In the Gospel Jesus reminds us of the story from Genesis and that male and female will leave their parents and be joined together and become one flesh. Jesus goes on in the Gospel account and tells the apostles that if husband and wife divorces and marries another then they commit adultery. The Church asked that a couple who wishes to receive the Sacrament of Marriage in which one or both parties has been married before get an annulment from their first marriage in which the Church states that the first marriage was annulled and therefore was not a sacramental marriage. It was obviously a civil marriage and that is why a civil divorce is needed before the annulment is granted. In this day and age let us continually pray that God will help those in the married state to love and cherish each other until death do them part and that they will love any children they conceive and bring them to birth and raise them to love God and neighbor. Bible Study Fr. Bob will continue the study of the Gospel of St. Matthew on Monday evenings at Charles Hall at 7:00 pm. The Sessions will be moved to St. Patrick beginning December 10th and ending on Monday, March 25th. There will be two to three sessions per month. A schedule will be passed out at the classes and each class date will be printed in the bulletin. We will begin on September 24th with Session #9 in the book entitled, Matthew: The King and His Kingdom by Jeff Cavins & Sarah Christmyer. If you need a book please call the parish office. The cost of the book is $ Fruitful Harvest 2018 The 2018 Fruitful Harvest Appeal, Walking Together in the Light of Christ will begin in our parishes this weekend, October 6-7, Prior to this weekend you should have received an envelope in the mail from Bishop Doherty with a brochure, pledge card and return envelope for mailing. The Appeal provides the opportunity for each of us within our parish to share in the good works of our diocesan family. By giving to the Fruitful Harvest 2018 Appeal, you are helping to support programs for our retired priests as well as new seminarians, for our youth, elderly, homeless and so much more. Our parish family from Charles has been asked to raise $43,245 and from St. Patrick $37,174. Redemption statements will begin in January of 2019 for those that scheduled recurring payments. I ask that you prayerfully reflect upon a gift to the Appeal. Please know that Bishop Doherty and I are grateful to you for your sacrifice, regardless of the amount. As a parish, we rely on each and every family to join together in showing our love of our neighbor. We all say, What can I do? You can pray and you do. But praying before the Blessed Sacrament is so powerful. It is so peaceful and calming to just sit with Jesus. Pray, read, listen, meditate. Come and spend some quiet time with Jesus and see what a difference it makes in your life. We can change things, one prayer at a time.
