4 Dear Parishioners, This coming Wednesday, March 6th, is Ash Wednesday. Please see the time for services on Ash Wednesday in the bulletin. I remember some years ago visiting a hospital on Ash Wednesday to take ashes to a parishioner of the parish that I was assigned to at the time. As I was walking through the hall of the hospital, a patient from one of the rooms that I was passing yelled out, Hey Father, do you have ashes. I stepped into the room and met the individual and interesting enough he was not a Catholic but he still wanted ashes put on his forehead so I put the ashes on his forehead while saying the prayer, Remember man that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. Come to think about it I would suspect that patients in the hospital are even more vividly conscious of the fact that one s physical life will come to an end someday. Although Ash Wednesday is not a holyday and it is not obligatory to attend Mass there are probably more people that go to Masses on Ash Wednesday than most Holydays of Obligation. Let us always remember that everything that we have ultimately comes from God; therefore, we ultimately trust in God and not in ourselves. Since all our gifts come from God we will give thanks to God by sharing those gifts with others as God shares His gifts with us. In today s Gospel we are told to take out the log in our own eye before we attempt to take out the splinter of our brother s eye. Let us examine ourselves during Lent and what we need to change in our lives to be better followers of Jesus Christ and his call for us to forgive those who have wronged us and to help those in need and not to judge. Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule The Mass Schedule for Ash Wednesday and distribution of ashes will be: 8:00 am St. Patrick 7:00 pm St. Charles Church in Central and Eastern Europe On Ash Wednesday our tithe will be for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This helps support the Church in more than 20 countries that are still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. St. Patrick s celebration by the Knight of Columbus 9400 Saint Patrick was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the Apostle of Ireland, he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, the other patron saints being Brigit of Kildare and Columba. 5 Life Teen Soup Dinner Benton County Life Teen will be hosting a Soup Dinner on Sunday, March 10th from 11:00-1:00. It will be held at St. Patrick Church Hall in Oxford. Life Teen fundraisers help support their summer mission trip and various Life Teen field trips and activities. Come show your support to these great teens, and enjoy some delicious soup and salad! Rummage Sale The Benton Community Food and Service Co-op will be having a Rummage Sale again this year. It is Saturday, May 11, 2019 at St. Pat s Hall. If you are doing some spring cleaning you can donate your used good items to the co-op. You may drop off the items at the co-op on any Thursday from 9:00-6:00 prior to the sale or the church hall the week prior to the sale. Donations Needed The Community Food and Services Co-op is in ongoing need of your generous donations. The suggested item of donation for this month is SUGAR/FLOUR. You can place your donation in the boxes at the back of either St. Charles or St. Patrick s churches. Thank you for your support. For I was hungry and you fed me. Pop Tabs The 7th & 8th grade CCD class at St. Patrick s is collecting pop tabs for St. Monica s in Africa. They use these tabs to make purses to sell to help support women and children who have been terrorized by the Lord s Resistance Army. One purse will support a women and child for three daily meals and water for six months. There is tubs in the vestibule of both churches for your tabs. If you would like to see some purses go to google and type in pop tab purses in Africa. Cake Walk Sacred Heart School will have the annual St. Patrick s Cake Walk on Friday, March 15 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:15-2:45 p.m. Wear green and bring your change! Denim and Diamonds Sacred Heart School will host the 5th annual Denim & Diamonds Adult Prom on Saturday, March 9. Doors open at 7pm, DJ from 8 pm - midnight. Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased in the school office or at the door. Donation bar and snacks will be available. Adults 21 and older only. Any questions, please call Sacred Heart school at Knights of Columbus Scholarship The General de Lafayette Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will once again be awarding a $2000 scholarship to two High School Seniors in the Assembly area. This area covers the parishes of Crawfordsville, Lafayette, Otterbein, Oxford, West Lafayette and Central Catholic High School. Deadline for the application need to be postmarked by March 29, There are forms available in the parish office. The Knights are honored to be able to award these scholarships in order to assist the youth in their future endeavors. Adoration at Sacred Heart Substitutes are desperately needed for Adoration at Sacred Heart Chapel. The hours have been shortened to 9am - 11pm every Wednesday. Adorers are always needed too. Adoration is open to everyone.
