A Stewardship Moment December 8/9, 2018 In today s second reading, Saint Paul prays with joy and confidence for his friends in the Christian community at Philippi. He is encouraged that the community has partnered with him to proclaim the Gospel. He sees Christ s active presence and plan of salvation at work in the community. God s overarching plan is unclear to us. But when we see evidence of God working through others, doesn t it give us reason to hope that Christ is alive among us? Does the witness of others help our own prayer lives? Does it inspire us to be partners with others in promoting the Gospel? Food for thought in this second week of Advent. Giving Tree The Giving Tree will again be set up in the parish hall. Please place children s hats, gloves, socks and underwear on the tree. These will be distributed to children in our area who need them. Gifts for Jesus Babies If you would like to donate baby clothes or supplies for Jesus babies, there is a baby basket in the vestibule to place your items in. These items will be donated to Birthright in Rensselaer. Jesus will bless you for caring for his babies. 4 Dear Parishioners, In the second reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians St Paul writes, I rejoice at the way you have all continually helped promote the gospel. I rejoice at our parishioners of St. Charles and St. Patrick at the way you have all continually helped promote the gospel. I rejoice that we have teachers for our children with CCD, I rejoice that we have Life Teen for our teenagers, I rejoice at the activities of the Knights of Columbus to help others, I rejoice that we have Bible study classes and other religious activities by our Legion of Mary members, I rejoice at our Missions to Mexico and Haiti, and Catholic Heart Work Camp by our teenagers. I rejoice at other service ministries that we have at St. Patrick and St. Charles and I rejoice in the weekdays and weekend Masses attendance. In all of these ways we are helping to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ. During this Advent Season perhaps each of us can do another one time ministry or service of good will to help promote the Good News of Jesus Christ by our words and deeds and thereby increase our love for God and His Kingdom. St. Paul writes in Philippians, My prayer is that your love may more and more abound so that you may learn to value the things that really matter, up to the very day of Christ. Let us continually value uppermost the life that Jesus Christ desires us to live out in our lives. Happy Advent, Fr. Bob Land of Peace Religious Articles This weekend Land of Peace will be here to sell religious articles after all Masses. Land of Peace is a nonprofit organization with the mission of helping and supporting Christian families in the Holy Land through the Patriarch of Jerusalem. When anyone purchases handmade arts they help their mission and help the Christians in the Holy Land. In 1920 the Christian population in the Holy Land was 80%; today it is less than 2%. With the parish support and the parishioner s generosity we are able to help our brothers and sisters to live in Jesus land of birth. Land of Peace s goal is to build a charity hospital in the Holy Land. Parish Council We welcome Bob Zahnke to St. Charles Parish Council and we welcome back Wayne Crumbaugh to St. Patrick s. We thank Brad Wetli for completing Todd Wetli s term. Fruitful Harvest Walking Together in the Light of Christ Thanks to all who have made a pledge to the 2018 Fruitful Harvest Appeal, Walking Together in the Light of Christ. Your support ensures that essential charitable, educational and pastoral ministries of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana are continued and carried forward. No gift is too small. If you have not yet made a gift to Fruitful Harvest, we invite you to do so. You may place your pledge card in the collection basket or mail it in the return envelope provided. As of November 30 pledges received for St. Charles are $35,290 and their goal is $43,245 and pledges received for St. Patrick are $36,110 and their goal is $37,174. Advent Penance Services All Services begin at 7:00 p.m. December 10 St. Patrick, Oxford December 13 St. Mary s, Dunnington December 17 St. Charles, Otterbein December 18 Sacred Heart, Fowler Bible Study Bible Study moves to St. Patrick s December 10 but that evening and the following Monday, December 17 there will not be Bible Study due to Advent Penance Service. The next Bible Study session will be Monday, January 14, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick s. Gift Wrapping Life Teen and Benton Community Food and Service Co-op workers will be working together on Sunday, December 9 wrapping Christmas gifts for a Free Will Donation. Just bring your gifts to St. Pat s Church hall anytime between 3:00-8:00 and have some cookies and punch while your gifts are wrapped. You may provide your own gift wrapping paper or paper will be available. If you cannot sit and wait, you may drop off your gifts and pick them up by 8:00! Pop Tabs The 7th & 8th grade CCD class at St. Patrick s is collecting pop tabs for St. Monica s in Africa. They use these tabs to make purses to sell to help support women and children who have been terrorized by the Lord s Resistance Army. One purse will support a women and child for three daily meals and water for six months. There is tubs in the vestibule of both churches for your tabs. Benton County Toy Shop The Benton County Toy Shop is accepting donations of new toys. Popular items requested are: Legos, arts & crafts, baby dolls, action figures, and board games. There is a box in the vestibule for your donations. Donations Needed The Community Food and Services Co-op is in ongoing need of your generous donations. The suggested item of donation for this month is CEREAL. You can place your donation in the boxes at the back of either St. Charles or St. Patrick s churches. Thank you for your support. Mass/Parish Activities Cancelation Due to Weather During the weekdays from Monday to Friday if Benton Community School Corporation cancels school for the day then there will be no Mass or parish activities on those days. If there is only a two hour delay we will have Mass. If there is a travel warning declared of no traveling except for emergency management workers then there will be no Mass or parish activities for the day all days of the week including Sundays. American Red Cross Blood Drive The American Red Cross blood drive will be held in the Guthridge Hall of the Fowler United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 12 from noon to 5:30 p.m. Thank you to those who have remained faithful in donating. Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend What is a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend? It is a positive, renewing experience for couples that have a good marriage, but want to make it even better! This is a time for you and your spouse to spend time together and learn about the tools to nourish your Sacrament in a new way. But praying before the Blessed Sacrament is so powerful. It is so peaceful and calming to just sit with Jesus. Pray, read, listen, meditate. Come and spend some quiet time with Jesus and see what a difference it makes in your life. We can change things, one prayer at a time. There is Adoration every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 midnight in the Chapel in the Annex at Sacred Heart. Sign up for a set hour every week or just stop by. You will be blessed.
