1 Welcome to St. Paul s Church We are glad you are here, and we invite you to enter fully into worship this evening. We invite you to ask questions, explore, and to make yourself known to those around you. Please pick up a newsletter and any other information about the parish located at the entrances to the church. Tell us more about yourself by filling out one of the cards located in each pew. Help us make this a place where God s grace is freely shared by all. Evensong The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany February 17, 2019 at 5 pm St Paul s Church in Englewood an Episcopal Parish in the Diocese of Newark and the Anglican Communion Evensong Episcopalians celebrate services called offices at the beginning and the ending of the day. These daily services of prayer and praise are rooted in the Jewish and early Christian traditions of saying prayers at fixed hours of the day (Acts 10:9, 16:25). Many cathedrals, monastic houses, and collegiate chapels throughout the world celebrate these services daily, and choral Evensong is one of the most distinctive parts of the Episcopal/Anglican musical tradition. Settings of the Magnificat (The Song of Mary) and Nunc dimittis (The Song of Simeon) have formed the foundation of our choral literature since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. The pairing of these canticles at Evensong is meant to illustrate that God s promise and fulfillment of salvation are a never-ending circle, just as the regular celebration of Evensong is a liturgical conversation that was begun long before we were here and will continue long after we are gone. We invite you to pray, enter into the music and allow it to transform you, and to give thanks for the blessings that it brings. Parish Mission Statement The mission of St. Paul s Episcopal Church is to love God and our neighbor, continuing Christ s life in the world. With God s help, and embracing our diversity, we will proclaim the Gospel, seek the truth, and strive for peace and social justice.

2 Hymn bromley Text: Latin, tr. J.M. Neale, 1851; Tune: F.J. Haydn, 1794 Evensong Organ Prelude Please stand as the ministers enter The Officiant begins the service with these opening sentences from Scripture Seek him that made the Pleiades and Orion, that turneth deep darkness into the morning, and darkenenth the day into night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his Name. Amos 5:8 Jesus said, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12 Invitatory & Psalter Sung by the Choir John Sanders Cantor O Lord, open thou our lips: Choir And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Cantor O God, make speed to save us: Choir O Lord, make haste to help us. Cantor Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: Choir As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Cantor Praise ye the Lord: Choir The Lord s name be praised. Choir Psalm 19 Caeli enarrant chant: S.S. Wesley The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork. One day tells its tale to another, and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language, and their voices are not heard, Their sound is gone out into all lands, and their message to the ends of the world. In the deep has he set a pavilion for the sun; it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run its course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens 1 2

3 and runs about to the end of it again; nothing is hidden from its burning heat. The law of the Lord is perfect and revives the soul; * the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. The statutes of the Lord are just and rejoice the heart; * the commandment of the Lord is clear and gives light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; * the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, * sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb. By them also is your servant enlightened, * and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can tell how often he offends? * cleanse me from my secret faults. Above all, keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; * then I shall be whole and sound, and innocent of a great offense. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, * O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. The Lessons First Lesson 1 John 2:3-11 A reading from the First Letter of John. Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. Whoever says, I have come to know him, but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: whoever says, I abide in him, ought to walk just as he walked. Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word that People 3 4 you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new commandment that is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. Whoever says, I am in the light, while hating a brother or sister, is still in the darkness. Whoever loves a brother or sister lives in the light, and in such a person there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates another believer is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has brought on blindness. Silence is kept for a space The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand Magnificat sung by the Choir Herbert Howells Gloucester Service My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

4 People Second Lesson John 8:12-19 A reading from the Gospel of John. Jesus spoke to them, saying, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Then the Pharisees said to him, You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid. Jesus answered, Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I judge no one. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus answered, You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also. Silence is kept for a space The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand Nunc Dimittis sung by the Choir Herbert Howells Gloucester Service Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Homily Please stand and sing Apostles Creed ALL I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Choir Amen. A Collect for Peace Officiant O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Choir Amen. A Collect for Mission Officiant O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: send forth upon us the Spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 6 Concluding Prayers Officiant Let us pray. ALL Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen. Officiant Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee; and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. People Amen. Officiant Let us bless the Lord. People Thanks be to God Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. People Amen.
