1 WARWICK TEAM MINISTRY Weekly Newsletter WELCOME TO OUR SERVICES. If you are a newcomer to St Mary s Church, or a visitor to the area, please introduce yourself to one of the sidespeople or the clergy. We hope that you enjoy worshipping with us. Communicant members of any Christian church are welcome to make their communion with us. If you do not wish to receive communion, but would like to receive God s blessing, simply hold this service booklet when you come to the altar rail. St Mary s seeks to be an inclusive church and welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds. We have a carpeted area and pew bags available for the youngest members of our congregation, if they wish to use it. And they may like to take an adult with them! If you re a UK tax payer the money you place in the collection can be increased by around 25% if you fill out a blue envelope in the nave chairs or by the main entrance and allow us to retrieve the tax you ve already paid & put it towards the work of St Mary s. 3 NOTICES THIS SUNDAY (1) It s a delight to welcome Angelo Swinton and Theodore Herring to St Mary s for their baptisms in the 10.30am, and Phoebe Dexter at 12.30pm Please do keep them and all their family and friends in your prayers today and the coming week. THIS SUNDAY (2) Last Thursday an Archdeacons Visitation was held in Rugby at which John Luxton and Gail Guest were formally commissioned and licensed as churchwardens for St Mary s. This morning during the 10.30am we shall be welcoming them into office here in church. We are enormously grateful for all that they do at St Mary s. THIS SUNDAY (3) We are pleased to welcome St Mary s Scholars who are singing for our choral services this Sunday whilst our robed choirs take a well-earned half-term break. LAST SUNDAY It was a delight to welcome some of our hard working volunteers to last Sunday s Choral Evensong when we were giving thanks to God for the work of the tremendous teams of volunteers at St Mary s. We are appreciative of everyone s contribution to the life of our church, which is a wonderful team effort. LOOKING AHEAD (1) As people may know our curate, Alycia Timmis, is due to be ordained priest in Coventry Cathedral on Sun 1 st July. Amongst other things, this means that she will be able to preside at the Eucharist. The first time she ll be doing that is the following Sun (8 th ) and that will be followed by a bring-and-share lunch in The Rectory Garden. Alycia will be taking the Family Service on Sun 3 rd June and we will be exploring aspects of what ordination means but there won t be a Family Service on 1 st July, so people can attend Alycia s ordination in the cathedral.

4 LOOKING AHEAD (2) This Thursday (31 st ) is Corpus Christi and we have a at 7.30pm in St Mary s to celebrate this feast. PRAYER DIARY Thanks to Kirsteen Robson who has produced June s Prayer Diary, available in this week s newsletter for people to take away. We re thinking of providing an audio version. If that would be helpful, please speak to Kirsteen. REST IN PEACE We have been sorry to learn about the recent deaths of several people linked with our church. Patrick Wilson was a former churchwarden and his funeral was last Tuesday; Margaret Walker was a longstanding member of Collegium and her service was last Wednesday. And we re sorry to hear about the passing of Muriel Cohen who was a staunch worshipper here until illness made it difficult to get to St Mary s. No date has yet been fixed for her funeral. Please keep all their family and friends in your prayers at this time. MAYOR S NEWS Last Thursday in St Mary s Rich Eddy was made the new Mayor of Warwick. As far as we know this is first time that this important civic occasion has taken place in St Mary s in recent times (although Town Council meetings used to be held here in the Victorian era!) BIBLE READINGS PRAYER OF THE WEEK We pray for those who have recently finished school exams, And those who remain amid exams, Breathe your small voice of calm upon those who feel stressed, And those who feel pressured. We pray for the ever growing numbers of children who experience mental illness, That they may find peace and love in difficult times, And joy in the knowledge of Gods endless love. Amen.

5 CONGRATULATIONS to girl chorister Lara Hobden on successfully completing her time as a Probationer in the Choir. We were delighted that she was made up to Full Chorister during last Sunday s morning Eucharist. Lara is one of a number of girl choristers who attends Myton School, and it is very good to be continuing our links there. CATHEDRAL NEWS In 2010 Coventry Cathedral introduced an admission charge, in response to a difficult financial position. It was never something they were keen to do and always a matter of regret. Last year, conversations at Bishops Council led to a recognition that this extraordinary Cathedral is our greatest mission opportunity a massive shop window for Jesus, and a chance to draw people through their journey through our space, our art and architecture and our story, into the story of Jesus himself. As a result of partnerships within the Diocese of Coventry, and to mark the visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury, from last weekend we are removing the admission charge to the Cathedral! CHURCHES TOGETHER EVENTS 1 st June Friday Afternoon Tea 2.30 to 4.00pm at St Mary Immaculate Hall, West St. No need to book. Just turn up and enjoy yourself. 2 nd June Saturday Prayer Breakfast 7.30am at St Paul s. NB a changed venue from the printed programme 4 th June Monday Space to Remember 5.00 to 7.00pm at Northgate Methodist. A chance to remember a loved one, light a candle, write a message, pray, talk to someone about them. Come and go as you please. 2 nd, 16 th and 30 th June Saturdays HOTS in the Market Square to 12noon have prayer for healing of all kinds. 11 th June Monday Churches Together Forum 8.00pm at St Mary Immaculate Hall. CMM Sisters in Tanzania and Zambia On Thursday 7 th June at 10.30am Dirk Juttner will be giving a talk to the Mothers Union at the Cathedral in Coventry about the work of the CMM Sisters in Tanzania and Zambia. 6 HOME FOR GOOD People around Warwick are joining in the national A mile for every child campaign this summer to highlight the needs of children in care. Home for Good is hoping that a total of 35k miles will be covered around the country a mile for every child who enters the UK care system each year. Come along on Sat 23 rd June to Warwickshire Golf & Country Club, Leek Wootton. Registration is in the Health Club foyer from 10.30am - the walk starts at 11am. More information: jamesrose@homeforgood.org.uk or THE TWO CASTLES run is taking place on Sunday 10 th June and, as in previous years, there will be road closures in the vicinity to ensure the safety of both runners and spectators. Unfortunately this does mean closing Northgate, the Butts, Priory Road, Smith Street and part of Jury Street from 0850 to about 0920hrs on Sunday 10 th June. Last year we did cause some problems for your congregation so we have changed the instructions to our marshals to allow vehicles attending church to gain access past our road closure point at the top of Northgate Street so that they can park in the vicinity of St Marys Church. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by our run but this is a very significant local event which raises over 100,000 every year for charities and local good causes. ARDEN VALLEY BENEFICE - BIBLE READATHON At 1pm on the 11 th June someone at St James the Great, Snitterfield will open a Bible and start reading the book of Genesis. The aim is to read the entire Bible out loud in one session, lasting approximately 75 hours. Why are we doing it? First, it s a clear and visible expression of our Christian faith. Secondly, we hope to bring people together from across the benefice and diocese to complete the Readathon and to celebrate the Centenary of the Diocese of Coventry. Thirdly, we are planning to raise funds to support two overseas charities, Tariro in Zimbabwe and the Butterfly Tree Charity in Zambia. If you would like to take part, either alone or as part of a group, please see the poster at the back of church for more information. SUPPORTING THE MUSIC OF ST MARY S: We are very proud of the musical tradition at St Mary s. If you would like to support the music-making here we would love to hear from you. It might be sponsoring a service of Choral Evensong in memory of a loved one, or offering a contribution towards the cost of a set of music for the Choir, or sponsoring a concert/recital/something else!
