2 COLLECT Prayers and Readings O Lord, we beseech you mercifully to hear the prayers of your people who call upon you; and grant that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfil them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen FIRST READING - Proverbs A reading from the book of Proverbs. 20Wisdom cries out in the street; in the squares she raises her voice. 21 At the busiest corner she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 22 How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 23 Give heed to my reproof; I will pour out my thoughts to you; I will make my words known to you. 24Because I have called and you refused, have stretched out my hand and no one heeded, 25 and because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic strikes you, 27 when panic strikes you like a storm, and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but will not find me. 29Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD 30would have none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof 31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way and be sated with their own devices. 32For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; 33 but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster. 3 SECOND READING - James A reading from the letter of James. 1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For all of us make many mistakes. Anyone who makes no mistakes in speaking is perfect, able to keep the whole body in check with a bridle. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. 4 Or look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great exploits. How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, 8 but no one can tame the tongue a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. 10From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and brackish water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL - Mark We say or sing Alleluia Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. 27Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. 29 Jesus asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. 31Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. 3

4 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. POST-COMMUNION Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law: grant that we may love you with our whole heart and our neighbours as ourselves; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. This week we pray in particular: the Sacred Space service this evening, to which all are welcome those embarking on the Start course this week Messy Church next Saturday Prayers for our September Outreach Partner IMPACT We pray for those working for IMPACT, the Bedford Area Schools Christian Support Trust (BASCST), as they offer support to schools in the Bedford area. We pray that they will be able to help teachers, schoolchildren and young people to learn more about the Christian faith. 6 CHURCH MOTHERS UNION meets tomorrow, Monday 17 September, at 2.30pm in the Holt Room. Come along to hear an interesting talk on The History of Christianity in Poland by Ewa Allen. Christine Garrett. COMMUNITY FAIR: Saturday 22 September from 10.00am - 12noon. We have a wide range of charities represented at this year s Fair, including RNLI, Carers in Bedfordshire, Autism Bedfordshire, Bedford Guild House, Mothers Union, Tibbs Dementia Foundation and others. The stalls will be offering hand-made gifts, cakes, greetings cards, books, a teddy tombola and much more besides. Please do help us to publicise this event by telling your friends. Thank you. START COURSE: Thousands of people have started, re-started and started again on a new life with God. Reverend Canon Robin Gamble, author of The Start Course. Start is a 6-week introduction to the Christian faith that assumes no previous knowledge. If you are one of those people, or someone who wants to know a little more about the Christian faith and what it means to be a Christian, then please come and join Duncan in The Upper Room (19 September to 31 October), for a delicious cooked meal and a chance to chat and explore what it means to be a Christian. Pick up a leaflet from the back of the church or the curate. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: There will be a planning meeting over coffee in the Main Hall to discuss arrangements for Remembrance Sunday after the 10.00am service next Sunday 23 September. All those interested welcome. FILM NIGHT: The next film night is on Saturday 29 September at 7.00pm when the film to be shown will be A Late Quartet. Orders for food by the Wednesday prior to the Saturday evening please. SOCIAL OUTING to the Bedford Beer Festival on 4 October with the option to go for a curry afterwards. HELP FOR LOMBOK, INDONESIA: Some of you will know that our daughter, son-in -law and 3 granddaughters were on Lombok on 5 August when the most severe earthquake struck. They were, thankfully, unharmed, but most perturbed at the plight of the very kind Indonesian people they left behind when they flew home. They are raising funds in various ways (the children are keen to pet- and baby-sit and each of them is doing a sponsored event) and are in touch with a charity in Indonesia to which they can send funds directly. Rob and Angela Huddart FRIENDS OF ST ANDREW S VISIT TO BURY ST EDMUNDS CHRISTMAS FAYRE: Friday 23 November There is so much to see and do in this lovely Cathedral town. Add to this one of the biggest Christmas Fayres in the country with 300+ stalls, a typical Christmas Bazaar in the Cathedral and a traditional Street Market in the town centre and you have the makings of a great day out. Plural Sax celebrate the life and music of Peter Guthrie, local Bedford musician and teacher, with a Sunday afternoon concert of classical works arranged for ten saxophones.
