Kulick, JCL, V.G. OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Congratulates to Father Daniel Carr June 30, 2018 Bishop Edward C. Malesic ordained Father Daniel Carr to the priesthood on Saturday, June 30, at 10:00 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. Please keep Father Carr in your prayers and continue to pray for all people discerning God s call to the priesthood. Loving God, you call all who believe in you to grow perfect in love by following in the footsteps of Christ your Son. You have called Father Daniel Carr who will serve you as a newly ordained priest. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This is the process by which those interested in becoming a Catholic or interested in exploring that possibility to discern and prepare to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. If you, a family member or friend is considering this invitation, please contact Bill D Angelo at the Parish Office as soon as possible. Our program will start in the fall but this is a great time to meet and get more information. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Collection Report June 30, 2018 & July 1, 2018 Due to the early submission of the bulletin for the Independence Day Holiday, the collection report will be published in the bulletin the weekend of July 14 and July 15, Saint Benedict, Abbot Wednesday, July 11, 2018 Saint Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy (c. 480-c. 547). He was educated in Rome, was repelled by the vices of the city and in about 500 fled to Enfide, thirty miles away. He decided to live the life of a hermit and settled at mountainous Subiaco, where he lived in a cave for three years, fed by a monk named Romanus. Despite Saint Benedict s desire for solitude, his holiness and austerities became known and he was asked to be their abbot by a community of Monks at Vicovaro. He accepted, but when the monks resisted his strict rule and tried to poison him, he returned to Subiaco and soon attracted great numbers of disciples. He organized them into twelve monasteries under individual priors he appointed, made manual work part of the program, and soon Subiaco became center of spirituality and learning. He left suddenly, reportedly because of the efforts of a neighboring priest, Florentius, to undermine his work, and in about 525 settled at Monte Cassino. He destroyed a pagan temple to Apollo on its crest, brought the people of the neighboring area back to Christianity, and in about 530 began to build the monastery that was to be the birthplace of Western monasticism. Soon disciples again flocked to him as his reputation for holiness, wisdom, and miracles spread far and wide. He organized the monks into a single monastic community and wrote his famous rule prescribing common sense, a life of moderate asceticism, prayer, study, and work, and community life under one superior. It stressed obedience, stability, zeal and had the Divine Office as the center of monastic life; it was to affect spiritual and monastic life in the West for centuries to come. While ruling his monks (most of whom, including Benedict, were not ordained), he counseled rulers and Popes, ministered to the poor and destitute about him, and tried to repair the ravages of the Lombard Totila s invasion. He died at Monte Cassino on March 21. Reference: USCCB.org

President Mr. Pat Dillon Vice President Mr. David McNaughton Secretary Mr. Raymond Mowery Treasurer Mr. Robert Butala THE POPE'S PRAYER INTENTIONS ENTRUSTED TO THE APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER Rosary Altar Society News Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Marian Prayers Our Rosary Altar Society will sponsor our monthly devotions and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Marian Prayers on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 1:30-3:15 p.m. in the Church. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and all four mysteries of the Rosary will be prayed. There will then be a period of quiet time for private prayer and Adoration. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. with closing of our afternoon with Reposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 3:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us in this time of prayer as we pray for the intentions of the Church, our world and country along with your own private intentions. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Feast Day July 14 Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American to be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church. She was born in 1656, in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon. At age 19, Kateri Tekakwitha converted to Catholicism, taking a vow of chastity and pledging to marry only Jesus Christ. Kateri was very devout and was known for her steadfast devotion. She was in ill health and sadly passed away just five years after her conversion to Catholicism, she died at age 24 on April 17, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, She is the patroness of ecology and the environment, people in exile and Native Americans. JULY 2018 Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry. That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. 5 NEWS IN THE DIOCESE OF GREENSBURG Catholic Accent Awards The Catholic Accent has earned two first-place honors at the June s National Catholic Media Convention. The awards were for Best Twitter Account, Catholic Accent TODAY, which is available and for Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues: Rights and Responsibilities for last summer s coverage of the Diocese s response to the opioid crisis. Congratulations to all of the Catholic Accent Staff! MAGNIFICAT BREAKFAST The Greensburg Chapter of Magnificat A Ministry to Catholic Women is holding a Breakfast at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, Rt. 30 East, Greensburg on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 Noon. Guest speaker will be Susan Brinkmann, O.C.D.S., Director of Communications and New Age Research for Johnnette Benkovic s Women of Grace. Susan will tell of her conversion from a 1970 s feminist to a devout Catholic. DCCW Night at Saint Vincent Summer Theater August 7, 2018 The Greensburg Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is sponsoring a night at the Saint Vincent Summer Theatre for the comedy Leading Ladies August 7, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. The night includes 50/50 chances on theme baskets and refreshments. Smiy Memorial Golf Outing will be held August 10, 2018 at the Ligonier Country Club. The golf outing is one of three annual events hosted by Catholic Charities to raise funds for people in need.
