Kulick, JCL From Our Pastor: The Reverend Monsignor Larry J. Kulick, JCL, V.G. AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Saint Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert, Saint John the Baptist in the Gospel tells us that the beginning of the salvation of God is at hand. Let us continue our Advent journey with this spirit of hope. Sacrament of Penance The Sacrament of Penance is a special way in which we prepare ourselves this Advent season to celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord. It is important that we take advantage of the opportunities that are offered at this time of the year. Receive this special grace of this Sacrament and let us open our hearts to receive Christ. Regional Advent Penance Services There will be several priests to hear your confessions, please plan to attend on one of these dates: Monday, 10 th 7:00 p.m. Saint John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe Wednesday, 12th 7:00 p.m. Saint James Church, New Alexandria Tuesday, 18 th 7:00 p.m. Saint Rose Church, Latrobe

STEWARDSHIP REPORT 1, 2018 & 2, 2018 Income Budget Difference $5, $3, $ + 1, Advent - Around the World with Saints of the Week The true meaning of Advent and Christmas brings the opportunity to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, to show kindness to others, to give to those in need, and to share time and memories with family and friends. A great way to enjoy the Advent season is to learn about how countries around the world have unique customs and celebrations for the Advent season. Fiesta de la Guadalupana - Wednesday, 12, Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe This Mexican tradition has also been adopted by many people from Central and South America living in the United States. This is one of the most popular religious feasts among Hispanics in the United States. Many parishes throughout the country celebrate this feast day by doing reenactments of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Juan Diego, praying a morning rosary dedicated to her, and bringing her the traditional Mañanitas with mariachi bands singing songs to praise her. Our Lady of Guadalupe is also considered the patroness of the unborn. Pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday that she may help us in bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. Feast of Saint Lucy (Lucia) - Thursday, 13, 2018 Lucy s name means light. In Italy, children leave bowls of milk and carrots to attract the hungry donkey she travels on and make sure she stops by their house and leaves presents for them. In Sweden, Scandinavia and Croatia the feast day is called Luciadagen. The oldest girl in the family wears a white dress, a red sash as a sign of martyrdom, and a wreath crown with lighted white candles. Other girls also dressed as Lucy walk in procession singing traditional songs and carrying rolls and cookies that later on are shared with all those present. Saint Lucy, who we celebrate on Wednesday, is the patron saint of the blind. Saint John of the Cross, Friday, 14, 2018 Saint John of the Cross was known for his deep spirituality and compassion. Saint John of the Cross was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest, who was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile. Saint John of the Cross is known for his writings. Both his poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature and one of the peaks of all Spanish literature. He was canonized as a saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He is one of the thirty-six Doctors of the Church. Reference: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
