Kulick, JCL Monsignor Larry J. Kulick, JCL, V.G. A HUMBLE KING The consistent theme which we keep returning in this weekends readings is humility. We wait in joyful expectation for the coming of our Lord as King. But what we are told to expect and rejoice over is a meek and humble king, riding on a beast of burden. Not horses or chariots of the great and mighty, but a humble beast carries the Ruler whose dominion stretches from the River to the ends of the earth (Zechariah 9:10). This King comes to banish the tools of the warrior and bring peace. No wonder that a weary world rejoices and gives thanks to God! Pastoral Letter Last Thursday, Bishop Malesic released a pastoral letter and Saint James Parish distributed copies in our weekend bulletin on the opioid crisis that is gripping families and communities in the Diocese of Greensburg. Bishop Malesic outlines steps the Diocese is taking to address this problem and has recommendations for parish action. The letter was in the June 29, 2017 issue of The Catholic Accent and on the diocesan website, Seven Summer Diocesan Drug Education and Prayer Service Evenings with Bishop Malesic have been planned. Summer Diocesan Drug Education and Prayer Service Evenings Tuesday, July 11 Immaculate Conception Parish, Connellsville Friday, July 14 Immaculate Conception Parish, Irwin Wednesday, August 2 St. Joseph Parish, Uniontown Thursday, August 3 Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg Tuesday, August 8 St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittanning Thursday, August 10 Mary Queen of Apostles School, Greenwald Site, New Kensington Wednesday, August 16 St. Thomas More University Parish, Indiana Each session begins at 7:00 p.m. July Prayer Intention From Bishop Edward C. Malesic For people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, that through our steadfast prayers they will seek healing through our loving God, who will help sustain them on the difficult road to recovery.
3 SAINT JAMES CHURCH EVANGELIZATION CORNER By: William D Angelo Formation Director (724) MASS ATTENDANCE: We count everyone because everyone counts. A sincere thank you goes out to all who have responded to the Diocesan Lenten Appeal. To date, we have received 114 pledges and gifts totaling $50, This means we have reached our parish target of $42, Any donation made now to our Diocesan Lenten Appeal returns 100 percent to our parish and will help us continue to meet or surpass last year s grand total of $50, We are only $ away from reaching last year s grand total. Please consider helping us meet this milestone. If you have not already done so, please make time this week to make your gift. You may return your pledge card at Mass next weekend or return it to the Parish Office this week. In addition, you can make your pledge online at DLA.dioceseofgreensburg.org. Thank you very much for your generosity, it is deeply appreciated. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This is the process by which those interested in becoming a Catholic or interested in exploring that possibility to discern and prepare to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. If you, a family member or friend is considering this vocation, please contact Bill D Angelo at the Parish Office as soon as possible. Our program will start in the fall but this is a great time to meet and get more information. We all have to think if we can become a little poorer, all of us have to do this. How can I become a little poorer in order to be more like Jesus, who was the poor Teacher? Liturgical Ministries -Pope Francis- We would like to continue to take this opportunity to thank all who have generously given of their time and talent to our parish in these capacities and to invite any who are thinking of becoming more active in our liturgical ministries to consider a liturgical ministry in our parish. We are asking anyone that is considering joining in becoming an Altar Server, Lector, Choir Member, Cantor, Usher or Extra-Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion to contact Bill. Different talents and gifts are required for each of these ministries and training will be offered over the summer. Prayerfully consider this invitation and if interested drop a note in the Collection basket, Attention: Bill - call him at the rectory or send him an at: bdeangelo@dioceseofgreensburg.org
4 SAINT JAMES NEWS ~ Happy Anniversary ~ We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Pat Dillon who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 8, May they experience the grace of God, the support of family and friends, as they continue to live out their commitment to each other and God in the Sacrament of Marriage. Congratulations! Holy Name Society News Today at 9:30 a.m. Mass the Holy Name Society will have Installation of New Officers and we welcome three new members. Please take the opportunity congratulate these men on their commitment to Saint James Parish and to the ministries that they provide. President Mr. Pat Dillon Vice President Mr. David McNaughton Secretary Mr. Raymond Mowery Treasurer Mr. Robert Butala Saint Benedict, Abbot Tuesday, July 11, 2017 Saint Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy (c. 480-c. 547). He was educated in Rome, was repelled by the vices of the city and in about 500 fled to Enfide, thirty miles away. He decided to live the life of a hermit and settled at mountainous Subiaco, where he lived in a cave for three years, fed by a monk named Romanus. Despite Saint Benedict s desire for solitude, his holiness and austerities became known and he was asked to be their abbot by a community of Monks at Vicovaro. He accepted, but when the monks resisted his strict rule and tried to poison him, he returned to Subiaco and soon attracted great numbers of disciples. He organized them into twelve monasteries under individual priors he appointed, made manual work part of the program, and soon Subiaco became center of spirituality and learning. He left suddenly, reportedly because of the efforts of a neighboring priest, Florentius, to undermine his work, and in about 525 settled at Monte Cassino. He destroyed a pagan temple to Apollo on its crest, brought the people of the neighboring area back to Christianity, and in about 530 began to build the monastery that was to be the birthplace of Western monasticism. Soon disciples again flocked to him as his reputation for holiness, wisdom, and miracles spread far and wide. He organized the monks into a single monastic community and wrote his famous rule prescribing common sense, a life of moderate asceticism, prayer, study, and work, and community life under one superior. It stressed obedience, stability, zeal and had the Divine Office as the center of monastic life; it was to affect spiritual and monastic life in the West for centuries to come. While ruling his monks (most of whom, including Benedict, were not ordained), he counseled rulers and Popes, ministered to the poor and destitute about him, and tried to repair the ravages of the Lombard Totila s invasion. He died at Monte Cassino on March 21. New Members Mr. Bill Ebert Mr. Jeff Rouse
5 NEWS IN THE DIOCESE OF GREENSBURG Catholic Media Convention Awards On behalf of Bishop Edward C. Malesic, I extend sincere congratulations to the entire staff of The Catholic Accent for their recent recognition at the 2017 Catholic Media Convention held in Quebec City, Ontario, Canada, June 20-24, This is a highly competitive competition, and the association receives thousands of entries every year. The newspaper won Catholic Press Association Awards in four categories. They are noted below with their authors and CPA commentary: Second Place: Best Reporting on Vocations to Priesthood, Religious Life or Diaconate The power of prayer in guiding Father Ryan C. Ravis to priestly ordination: Jerry Zufelt, story; Elizabeth Fazzini, video; Mary Seamans, photo and video: The author of this well put together piece stands aside and lets Deacon Ravis tell his story that culminates in ordination to the priesthood. That s what all good authors do because the result allows readers to learn about a person by listening and watching the person. Excellent approach. The stories of the women, told simply and clearly, offer insight and perspective that surpasses typical pro-life rhetoric. Third Place: Best Multiple Picture Package First diocesan-organized Day of Mercy: Mary Seamans, photos; Elizabeth Fazzini, story: Decent variety of images that helped tell the story. Honorable Mention: Best Multimedia Package Series Year of Mercy articles, videos and slideshows: Mary Seamans, photos and videos; Elizabeth Fazzini, stories and videos; Maria Guzzo, stories. We are grateful to the entire staff for their dedicated work in enlightening people of all generations in the Diocese by reporting Catholic news and Church teaching, sharing the Good News, and providing faith-filled stories - all of which call people into a deeper understanding of their faith.
