Torres Birthday Hosts For every Mass have been donated by the Rosary Society From the Pastor s Desk The only 20 th -century Pope to be declared a saint so far is Pius X ( ). His given name was Giuseppe Sarto. He came from the humblest of backgrounds, being one of ten children of his father Giovanni, a janitor, and his mother Margherita, a dressmaker. After ordination he was assigned to the small village of Tombolo, where he was respected and loved as a holy priest and as a man who was greatly generous to the poor. It was a reputation that was further solidified in his second posting, to the larger town of Solzano, where the poor came to his door day and night for food and wood, which he gave them even when it meant depriving himself of these necessities. To carry out these good works, he sold his own possessions and a number of the parish s, including its old horse and sorry carriage. His bishop told him, You will not be satisfied until you have pawned the thurible (the church s incense burner, used for its most solemn services). When the bishop assigned him to the diocesan seminary not long afterwards, his parishioners escorted him there, forming a kind of honor guard in conveyances that ranged from a fancy carriage to a humble cart drawn by a little donkey. As a tribute, some of them composed a special song that concluded: He came in garments that were torn, He left without a shirt. Eighteen years later, after serving as Bishop of Mantua and as Cardinal Patriarch of Venice, he was elected Pope. He once wrote this prayer, asking God for greater union with the Holy Spirit. It is a perfect accompaniment to today s feast of Pentecost. O Holy Spirit of Light and Love, to you I consecrate my heart, mind, and will for time and eternity. May I ever be docile to your divine inspirations and to the teachings of the holy Catholic Church whose infallible guide you are. May my heart be ever inflamed with the love of God and love of neighbor, may my will be ever in harmony with your divine Will. May my life faithfully imitate the life and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him, with the Father, and you, divine Spirit, be honor and glory forever. St. Mary s Church Night at the Movies Life is Beautiful Join us on Mon., June 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center Conference Room as we view the movie Life is Beautiful, a 1998 film which won multiple Academy Awards. Set in the late 1930 s in Arezzo, Italy, the story tells of a Jewish man who has a wonderful romance with the help of his humor, and must use that same quality to help his family during their internment in a Nazi death camp. Pantry Notice Parishioners, thank you so much for your past contributions to our Pantry. It s through your continued generosity that we have been so successful. A recent inventory of our Pantry revealed that we have enough soup, pasta and fruit for the present time. If you are planning on making a contribution, please make sure the expiration date of the product is not outdated as we will be unable to use it. We presently are in short supply of rice, dry milk, peanut butter, jelly, and tomato sauce. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. Update on Bishop McDonnell Bishop McDonnell continues to recover from the surgical repair of his recently injured shoulder at the Woodcrest Nursing Home in New Milford, NJ. If you wish to send him a get-well card you can do so through the Parish Center Office. Please continue to keep him in your prayers. We hope he will return to us soon! The Eddie Gray Camp Fund is seeking funds to send inner city children to summer camp. This year our cost per child is $100 for one week. However, we will be grateful for donations of any amount.
