Fall Dinner Sunday Nov. 12th When you look at something like the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and see its 691 pages, or look at the 2,000 pages of the big Jerusalem Bible, you can be forgiven for thinking that Christianity is a complicated affair. But Jesus reminds us today that it is essentially very simple: everything can be summed up in two basic rules: love God, love your neighbour. Exodus backs this up, by talking about the simple love that we must show to each other. Not that this is easy - love is always costly, and involves some degree of sacrifice. We will have to change, to become perfect in love; but it is possible, and when we do, like the people of Thessalonica, we become a great example to people everywhere. 7 H O L Y E D E E M E P A I S H N E W S Human Trafficking: Human trafficking is the world s fastest growing crime producing profits of upwards of $150 billion a year of which commercial sexual exploitation of women, girls, boys and young men earns $99 billion. It is estimated that there are well over 21 million trafficked victims who are trapped in modern day slavery. Groups considered most vulnerable to human trafficking include women, children, indigenous persons, persons with mental and physical disabilities and migrants. Fifty-five percent of all trafficking victims around the world are women and girls. Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion for the purpose of exploitation and is considered a grave violation of human rights punishable by international law. Anyone could fall victim to human trafficking, regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, and location, but certain individuals are more vulnerable to being trafficked than others. Factors that increase venerability of individuals include former experiences of abuse, instability (economic, social, personal), or living in or having escaped from areas of conflict. Communities and leaders must acknowledge that when women and girls are enslaved by human traffickers they are raped, beaten, threatened and forced into labour and the sex trade. These victims are denied all human rights, are treated as commodities and cast aside when they have outgrown their use to their captors. Even when rescued from traffickers, victims are often traumatized from the experience and unable to adjust to a normal life and assimilate back into their families and communities. For the most part, traffickers go unpunished. Only a few out of the millions in the world are prosecuted. In Canada, the most prevalent form of human trafficking is sex trafficking. Many of the stories making headlines on this topic involve foreign women being brought into the country. Yet this does not accurately represent our reality. Human trafficking does not have to involve the crossing of a border. Of the 401 cases the CMP has identified since 2005, 95 per cent of trafficking victims were from Canada, the majority being teenage girls. Girls are recruited in various ways at school, on Instagram, at the mall. Many continue to live at home while carrying out sex work at local motels or condominiums. There continues to be a large data gap on human trafficking in Canada, particularly when the victims are indigenous. In part, this is due to the insidious nature of human trafficking. On the other hand, there is often great mistrust of authorities by victims who are often unwilling to self-identify due to perceived stigmas, lack of awareness and understanding. Human trafficking is a complex and hidden crime that necessitates greater attention by all levels of Canadian government to ensure the protection of all victims. In order to end this scourge, the full cooperation of governments at all levels, concerned organizations, and the general public is required. Let s work together to eradicate underlying causes of human trafficking, to challenge the perpetrators by introducing updated legislation, and to create positive change for the victims and their families by developing rehabilitation programs so that they too may walk in freedom. If you live outside the parish boundaries the only way we are able to assist you is if you are registered with Holy edeemer and this is the parish you attend on Sundays. If you are new to the parish please introduce yourself to our priests. INFANT BAPTISM Please call the Parish Office at for an appointment. Parents must be parishioners here or live within parish boundaries. A Baptism Preparation Course is required for all parents and Godparents. A Godparent must be 16 years of age, baptized Catholic and be Confirmed. CAE OF THE SICK & HOME BOUND To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick and/or Holy Communion for the home-bound, please contact the parish office. Visits to area hospitals are made regularly; please call and let us know you would like a visit. MAIAGE For couples interested in the Sacrament of Marriage, we ask that you please contact the parish to make an appointment at least 8 months in advance. A Marriage Preparation course is required. SACAMENTAL PEPAATION In Grade 3, children may receive the Sacraments of econciliation and 1st Communion. At our parish the Sacrament of econciliation is celebrated in the Fall and 1st Communion in the Spring. Confirmation is generally celebrated in Grade 7/8 in the new year.
