2 H O L Y E D E E M E P A I S H N E W S There is a sense of urgency about discipleship almost like emergency services responding to a crisis, in the Gospel today there is no time to wait for any normal human moments, no reason to delay: the hand must be placed immediately on the plough, the work must begin NOW! It can feel as though Jesus is being a little abrupt in this passage even a little too intense! But it is a question of priorities: for the Lord, the work of salvation, or proclaiming the Gospel, brooks no delay. Perhaps this intensity is a valuable reminder for us we can tend to tame Jesus, and forget that he was passionately and totally dedicated to the Mission his heavenly Father had entrusted to him even to the point that he left Nazareth to become a homeless preacher with nowhere to lay his head. If so, this retreat is for you. Provide for yourself this opportunity to be touched by a God of care and compassion. VOLUNTEES FO ST. ALPHONSUS FOOD BANK NEEDED! If you are newly retired, or you can spare some time to volunteer, we are in need of volunteers here at Holy edeemer Food Bank. Our food bank serves clients in the Minnow Lake area. If you are interested, please drop by the Church office, Monday thru Friday to pick up an application form. Or call the office and leave your name and number. Volunteers are required for several positions: 1) Pick up food at Sudbury Food Bank weekly. 2) Pick up large loads once a month. 3) Data inputting (computer work). 4) Purchase food weekly or by-monthly. Most jobs will take 1-2 hours per week. Volunteers can determine how many hours they are willing to give. PLEASE TAKE NOTE: On Friday, July 1st Mass will be celebrated at 9 AM. Our usual 1st Friday of the month Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be cancelled. For those wishing, Our Lady of Hope Parish does provide Exposition in their chapel 24/7. For example, we don t reach out to our neighbor in need because we won t let go of our own concerns. Or we don t move toward healing a relationship because we won t let go of a past hurt. As part of the 350th anniversary of Notre-Dame de Québec, to build a Holy Door in the Basilica Cathedral is an exceptional privilege authorized by the Holy See to the first Catholic parish in North America, north of Mexico. This door is a symbol of communion with the universal Church. The Holy Door is first of all a real door, pierced in the wall of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, north side of the Basilica Notre-Dame de Québec. A Holy Door is a symbol of oneness with the Universal Church. It is also a symbol of convocation, an invitation to persons of good will to enter, whatever their religious denominations. It is a visual symbol of internal renewal, which begins with the willing desire to make peace with God, reconcile with your neighbors, restore in yourself everything that has been damaged in the past, and reshape your heart through conversion. The Holy Door serves to remind today s pilgrims of all those who came before us to bring the Catholic faith from France to New France. May it serve as a visible sign of faith for future generations. On November 20, 2016, the Holy Door will be closed and sealed. It will become an object of devotion for pilgrims and will open again only during Holy Years, about every 25 years. There is no charge for passing through the Holy Door. (look for bright blue Shark Bate t-shirts) 2016 Pledge Beneficiary: Northern Cancer Foundation and the P.E.T. Scan Fund A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanner, is a diagnostic imaging tool that has been known to help patients battle against certain forms of cancer, heart disease and neurological conditions. The intention is to provide Northeastern Ontario patients access to this technology closer to home (the nearest PET Scanner being located in Toronto). Since the Fund s inception in 2010, over $730,000 has been raised towards the purchase of PET Scan equipment (which costs anywhere from $2.5 million to $4 million). The Northern Cancer Foundation administers the PET. Scanner Fund, which is led by a steering committee of eight members, seven of which are family members of the late Sam Bruno (the original advocate for the scanner), including his widow, Cheryl. The Sudbury Dragon Boat Festival sees an exciting opportunity for the NCF, PET Scan Fund to grow and we ask that our amazing community give generously to this cause. Thank you for your support! The first annual A Night at the Grotto on September 1st, 2016 from 7-9:30 pm, concert showcasing Sudbury s local musical artists and the beauty of the Grotto and Fountain of Life. Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life are being offered in the Fall of 2016 at Villa Loyola. They will consist of 30 weeks of prayer material with small group gatherings every second week during which you will learn strategies for discerning God s will for you. Director of the Exercises is Fr. on Perron. If you are interested or are unfamiliar with them and want to learn more, please join us at our introductory evening Tue. THEAPY HAP CICLE & WOKSHOPS If you are interested in playing the Celtic Harp and being part of a Therapeutic Harp Circle, please contact Crystal McCollom at cmccollom@persona.ca (or ) to be put on the list of interested participants. Crystal is the Chair of the Sudbury Irish Arts Association. Celtic harpist Anne-Marie Smith of Spirit Talker Harps in Corbeil, ON will share her knowledge of therapy harp and lead a monthly circle gathering. The group will learn to play basic harp melodies and enjoy the more gentle Celtic repertoire used in healing & relaxation. Participants should have their own instrument (with or without levers) and beginners are welcome. We will be playing together from the first gathering on, keeping the music simple and enjoyable. If you live outside the parish boundaries the only way we are able to assist you is if you are registered with Holy edeemer and this is the parish you attend on Sundays. If you are new to the parish please introduce yourself to our priests. INFANT BAPTISM Please call the Parish Office at for an appointment. Parents must be parishioners here or live within parish boundaries. A Baptism Preparation Course is required for all parents and Godparents. A Godparent must be 16 years of age, baptized Catholic and be Confirmed. CAE OF THE SICK & HOME BOUND To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick and/or Holy Communion for the home-bound, please contact the parish office. Visits to area hospitals are made regularly; please call and let us know you would like a visit. MASS EQUESTS: equest envelopes are available on the table at the main entrance of the church or through the office. The suggested donation is $15. FUNEALS If you have any questions about the Catholic Funeral ite please call the parish office before making funeral arrangements and talk to one of the pastoral staff. FO THOSE INTEESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC We are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in Baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. For children aged 7-16, parents may call the Parish Office. MAIAGE For couples interested in the Sacrament of Marriage, we ask that you please contact the parish to make an appointment at least 8 months in advance. A Marriage Preparation course is required. SACAMENTAL PEPAATION In Grade 3, children may receive the Sacraments of econciliation and 1st Communion. At our parish the Sacrament of econciliation is celebrated in the Fall and 1st Communion in the Spring. Confirmation is generally celebrated in Grade 7/8 in the new year. For more detail or to register please call the parish office. ST. ALPHONSUS FOOD BANK (for Minnow Lake area) To access the Food Bank please call and leave a message. Someone will return your call on Wednesday and let you know your pick-up time. Donations to the food bank are always accepted. Please deposit food donations in the wooden box at the main doors of the church. For monetary donations, blue envelopes are available on the table at the main entrance of the church (please indicate Food Bank) These can be placed in the collection basket.
