To receive a letter of Sponsorship for Baptism or Confirmation from the Pastor, one has to be an active parishioner of this parish for at least three months, received the Sacraments of initiation, and (if married) be in a Catholic Church recognized marriage. 4 The St. Mark s Council of Catholic Women meets the second Saturday of each month from September to May. We are currently on Summer Break. Membership is open to all women of the parish, and new members are always welcome. To build on this success, I am challenging you to put envelopes on a permanent vacation and set up an egiving account with Faith Direct today. egiving is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and St. Mark does not receive their envelopes. It s easy for people to forget to catch up once they re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result--making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this egiving Challenge, the more consistent and predictable our offertory will be month after month--and this will help us do even more to spread Christ s love throughout the community. 10 FYI: 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 This weekend the Scriptures ponder over the role of a prophet in the midst of the people. During Jesus time there were two types of prophets. One was the type of prophet that went to school. He would be taught Hebrew, the language of the Jewish people. He would also be taught the interpretations of the Scriptures along with the traditions and observances of the Jewish people. Among these were Josephus and Gamaliel who taught St. Paul. These would be known as the scribes and rabbis of Jesus time. In modern day terms these would be called theologians or philosophers. The other kind of prophet was the charismatic prophet. A charismatic prophet would be one chosen by God himself. Among these would be included Isaiah, Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, John the Baptist and even Jesus Himself. Sometimes charismatic prophets did not want to be prophets because being a charismatic prophet would normally bring you into opposition, especially with the politicians and religious leaders of the day. Often times these prophets were ridiculed and even put to death. They were men and women chosen by God to remind the people of their duty to the Covenant. In the first Reading today taken from the Prophet Ezekiel, He is one of these charismatic prophets. Notice how this Reading is set. Ezekiel knows that the Israelites have become rebels and backstabbers. He knows that his duty will not be easy and that he will suffer much. But the purpose here is to remind Israel that even though the nation has turned away from God, there is a prophet in Israel who will not let them forget. The second Reading taken from St. Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians is his narration of what it means to bring salvation to the Gentiles. He is reminded not to get a swelled head about his accomplishments or about his mission, but to always remember that he is working for God and Christ. It is a wonderful testimony to humility. Finally, the Gospel account taken from St. Mark is a narrative of Jesus returning to Nazareth. The natives of Nazareth knew Jesus, Mary and Joseph very well. Many were related to Him. They grew up with Him. Nazareth, like Boynton Beach, was a small town. Everyone knew everyone else s business. Even knowing where the skeletons were hidden in each other s closets. This is the atmosphere in which Jesus finds Himself. Notice that this is one of the few times that Jesus is recorded as being amazed. Unlike His amazement at the centurion s faith in Jesus power, He is amazed at the people of Nazareth s lack of faith. It proves the old adage that is quoted today, A prophet is with honor except in his native territory. On a personal level, sometimes I have been asked whether I would ever like to go to my home-parish as an assignment. My home-parish is a wonderful place. Fr. Romulus, Fr. Germain s good friend, is stationed there, but I wouldn t touch it with a ten-foot pole. I am happy here. Brothers and Sisters, while we have time, let us do good. Fr. Dan

11 St. Thomas More Academy in Boynton Beach (on Military Trail) is offering a fun filled summer camp program for your 2 ½ year old (and potty trained) through 2 nd grade. Our fun camp themes for the remainder of the summer are: Celebrating American - Disney Week - Wild, Wild, West - Super Heroes - and Safari Fun. The children learn about and believe in God and his faith as is discovered in our half hour daily religious lessons. During the school year, the boys and girls at the Academy attend St. Thomas More Church s 8:30AM mass once a week. Also, for the month of July STM Academy is offering $25.00 off the registration fee for new enrolling families.
