B, C -P I T G T S G W Due to the Forty Hours Devotion last week, Mr. Bob Shea will give the 30-minute guided tour of the stained glass windows today at 12noon, instead of on the usual 2nd Sunday of the month. These tours highlight some of the more than 35 windows in our church and cover both the art history and religious aspects. C W 2018 A C W L M. N B R O NOW : Sacred-Music-Workshop-2018/ We are pleased to announce that the Second Chant and Sacred Music Workshop, with Canon Wulfran Lebocq and Mr. Nicholas Botkins, will be offered at St. Francis de Sales Oratory on April 20-22, The workshop will begin for all participants on Friday, April 20 with check-in registration at 4:15pm. The title of this Lenten talk is: With Christ in the desert. 4 F A T L C Canon 1250 CIC: All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the entire Church. Canon 1251 CIC: Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities; abstinence and fast are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on the Friday of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Canon 1252 CIC: All persons who have completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their sixtieth year. Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance. Can CIC: It is for the conference of bishops to determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence and to substitute in whole or in part for fast and abstinence other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety. Abstinence: On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. They must do some penitential/charitable practice on these Fridays. For most people the easiest practice to consistently fulfill will be the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere. Fasting: The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th to the 59th birthday to reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals which if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by eating between meals and by drinks which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem to be contrary to the spirit of doing penance. P G Please remember St. Francis de Sales Oratory in your Will or Living Trust. An appropriate Will or Trust provision would be: "I give to The Friends of St. Francis de Sales Oratory, Inc., St. Louis, Missouri, for the Oratory's unrestricted use." I A The Oratory s biggest annual financial obligation is that of our property and liability insurance assessment. Our insurance assessment for the fiscal year was $89, This payment was made on time, consisting of $600/week set aside from the Sunday collection and from your generous donations through our envelope program. To reach the total of $89,625.00, the remainder amount of $32, was drawn from our collection surplus and other funds previously set aside for other eminent projects. 5 O R U A significant part of the restoration process is releathering. As leather ages it becomes brittle, causing bellows and chests to leak and eventually blow-out. The reservoir valves pictured below have been releathered and will be re-installed over the next few weeks. The newly leathered valves will ensure that the organ operates smoothly, efficiently, and quietly. Above: a look at the deteriorated leather of one of the reservoir valves. F H C 2018 First Holy Communion for children of the Oratory will take place during the 10:00am Mass on Mother s Day, May 13, If you would like your child to receive First Holy Communion, please inform the Rectory at: (314) by Friday, March 9th. The deadline to register your child for First Communion is Friday, March 16, Important information and dates for parents: 1.) Attend, together with your child, one of the two catechism classes offered by us on Saturday, March 10, or Saturday, March 17, at 10:00am. 2.) Schedule a brief meeting for your child with Canon Wiener during the month of April. 3.) Submit a copy of the Baptismal record issued within the last 6 months from the parish of record to the Rectory by May 1st. 4.) The child s First Confession must be made by the week prior to the day of your child s First Holy Communion. Confession can be made during any of the confessional times listed in the bulletin or by appointment. Notify the Rectory with the date. 5.) A mandatory rehearsal for the children will be held on May 6th after the 10:00am Mass in the church. THE FIRST COMMUNICANTS WILL RECEIVE THE BROWN SCAPULAR THAT SAME DAY. Thank you.
