3 NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS NEXT SUNDAY OCTOBER 19, 2014, AT 5:00PM 800 YEARS KING ST. LOUIS IX 250 YEARS CITY OF ST. LOUIS VISIT OF ARCHBISHOP CARLSON On Sunday, October 19th, Archbishop Carlson will come to the Oratory as we add our contribution to the city-wide celebration of the 800 th birth anniversary of King St. Louis (Louis IX of France) and the 250 th anniversary of the founding of the city of St. Louis that bears the holy saint s name. The program will begin at 5:00 PM, starting with honoring King Saint Louis with his holy relic in a solemn procession. The entire program, including a sermon pronounced by the guest of honor, His Grace, Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, is as follows: Procession of Relic of St. Louis Solemn Vespers Homily pronounced by His Grace, Archbishop Carlson Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Benediction Reception in the Oratory Hall Throughout this year, many civic as well as Catholic events have been organized in St. Louis to highlight the history, development, and accomplishments of our great city. Please join us as the Oratory marks this special anniversary year with the Church s joyful and solemn liturgy. OCTOBER 19-5:00PM: VISIT OF ARCHBISHOP CARLSON - ANNIVERSARY OF KING ST. LOUIS IX OCTOBER 26: FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING - PATRONAL FEAST OF THE INSTITUTE NOVEMBER 23: KIRCHWEIHFEST DECEMBER 14: GAUDETE GALA 2014 GAUDETTE GALA 2014 Gaudete Gala 2014 will be glorious, elegant, and uplifting a sublime moment of joy during Advent. This year the Gala will take place on Sunday evening, December 14th, at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Blvd, Saint Louis), and will once again feature the Oratory s choirs under the direction of Mr. Nick Botkins. Tickets for the Gala Reception and the Concert will go on sale November 5th. Please reserve the date December 14 on your calendars, and plan on inviting your families and friends to share the joy of Christmas at the Gaudete Gala. ROSARIES FOR THE MISSIONS As in years past, our family physician is taking a medical mission to El Salvador. He and his colleagues will see hundreds of patients and they will take any donated rosaries to give to the patients they serve. During the month of October, if you have any extra rosaries to donate, please place them in the indicated baskets in the vestibules. We will have them blessed and deliver them to our doctor before he leaves at the end of October. Thank you! The Pekny Family BROWN SCAPULAR If you have not yet been enrolled in the Brown Scapular, you will have two opportunities every month to do so: After the evening Masses (6:30 PM) on every First Friday and every first Tuesday of the month, you can present yourself at the Mother of Perpetual Altar and be enrolled by one of the Priests at the Oratory. Please bring your own Brown Scapular!

4 40 DAYS FOR LIFE This fall, from Sept 24th to Nov 2nd, St. Louis will be uniting with other cities across North America and around the world for a massive coordinated pro-life mobilization the 40 Days for Life prayer and fasting campaign. People of faith are praying that, with God s grace, this effort will help bring an end to the tragedy of abortion. The most visible component of this campaign is to maintain a Peaceful, Prayerful vigil in front of an abortion facility. The St. Louis Vigil location will be at Planned Parenthood, 4251 Forest Park Ave St. Francis de Sales Oratory has pledged to participate in the Prayer Vigil from 7am to 7pm on Friday Oct 17th. At least two prayer volunteers are needed for each hour. Please check your calendars to see how you can help us fulfill this commitment. 5 KIRCHWEIHFEST SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 This year we will see again our Kirchweihfest, the celebration of the consecration of our magnificent church on November 26, According to the tradition here at the Oratory we will offer a festive lunch with German (Bavarian) food, catered by Two Mikes Catering, after the 10:00 AM Mass on November 23, 2014, in the church hall. This year s Kirchweihfest will again include a Chocolate Cake Contest. If you want to participate in this important culinary event, please register at the rectory before November 15, 2014, 12 Noon. Only chocolate cakes which were produced entirely from scratch (no cake mixes!) will enter the finals. Organic ingredients and gluten-free cakes will gain special points. The Kirchweihfest will include several features of the Summer at the Oratory event as well as the Seminary Society Breakfast. It will be an occasion for us to celebrate the many blessings God has bestowed on this wonderful Oratory community, especially the generosity and the fruitful hard work of its members, for which we are most grateful. 6 ORATORY ORGANIZATIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ST. FRANCIS DE SALES COUNCIL KOFC14067.ORG Tootsie Roll Drive You ve seen them Knights of Columbus in yellow aprons selling Tootsie Rolls for as much as they can get you to give. It is the annual Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. In 1981, the Missouri Knights of Columbus established the first developmental center in the region dedicated to children with special needs. Today the KofC Developmental Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Medical Center ( supports children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders in reaching their highest potential through comprehensive evaluation, care, family guidance, education and research. Half the proceeds of the Drive benefit the Knights Center, and the other half are given to other organizations serving the developmentally disabled and their families, like Special Olympics. Please give generously on Sunday, October 12 th here at SFdS. COFFEE HOUR Coffee Hour is a project of the KofC Council. Come to the hall after Holy Mass and have a cup of coffee, a pastry or yogurt, and make some new friends. ORATORY CLEANING The Oratory Cleaning Crews put the church in order after the final Mass each Sunday.
