ROGATION DAYS Rogation comes from the Latin rogare, which means to ask. Rogation Days are days during which we seek to ask God's mercy, appease His anger, avert His chastisements manifest through natural disasters, and ask for His blessings, particularly with regard to farming, gardening, and other agricultural pursuits. The Litany of the Saints are sung in a procession which precedes Mass. The vestments are of the penitential color violet, although the joyous alleluia can be heard at Mass. Three Rogation days precede Ascension Thursday. These Rogation Days are of French origin, coming about in the 5th century, when St. Mamertus, Bishop of Vienne, instituted them after a series of natural calamities. Pope St. Leo III -- the Pope who crowned Charlemagne on Christmas Day of introduced these days of penance into Rome in 816, the year of his death. They then became the standard throughout the Roman Church. SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL RETREAT: JUNE A lay association within the spiritual family of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, the Society of the Sacred Heart gives the opportunity for lay faithful share in the spirituality of the patron saints of the Institute, St. Francis de Sales, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Benedict. The first annual Society retreat will be offered June here at the Shrine. Spiritual conferences will be given by Monsignor Gilles Wach, Founder and Prior General of the Institute, and Monsignor Schmitz. Those interested in further information regarding membership may visit or contact Canon Talarico at , ext. 5 or via at sacredheart@institute-christ-king.org. WISDOM OF SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES It is right that we should feel sorry for past sins, with a firm, constant, settled, and peaceful repentance, but not with one which is disturbed, troubled, or discouraged. Do you know that the delay of your progress in the path of virtue is caused by your own fault? Then humble yourself before God, implore His mercy, prostrate yourself before the face of His goodness and ask His pardon; confess your fault...when all is done, be in peace, and having detested the sin, accept willingly the misery within you which is the cause of the delay of your advancement. Let us wait patiently for our advancement; and instead of disquieting ourselves for having done so little in the past, let us endeavor to do more for the future. Treatise on the Love of God, Book 9, chap. 7 INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST 03

4 LITURGICAL CALENDAR SUNDAY, MAY 17, FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER FEAST OF THE ASCENSION: THURSDAY, MAY 21 Of all the feasts of Our Lord, I dare to say that, in a certain sense, the Ascension is the greatest, because it is the supreme glorification of Christ Jesus. Blessed Dom Columba Marmion The feast of the Ascension shows us the work of God in its completion...it is not enough for man to hope in the merits of his Redeemer's Passion, which cleansed him of his sins; it is not enough for Him to add to the commemoration of the Passion that of the Resurrection, whereby our Redeemer conquered death; man is not saved, he is not reinstated, except by uniting these two mysteries with a third: the Ascension of the same Jesus who was crucified and rose again. During the forty days of His glorified life on earth, Jesus was still an exile; and, like Him, we also are exiles until such time as the gate of heaven, which has been closed for thousands of years, shall be thrown open, both for Him and for us. The Liturgical Year, Dom Prosper Gueranger This feast commemorates Christ's Ascension into Heaven from Mount Olivet 40 days after He rose from the dead. After the Gospel is sung, the Paschal Candle, lit from the New Fire of the Easter Vigil, is extinguished to symbolize the departure of Christ. He went up with His Risen Body into Heaven to be glorified with the Father, to sit at His right hand, to rule as King of Kings, to send us the Holy Ghost. Christ also ascended to prepare a place for us in Heaven. "And if I shall go, and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you also may be." 5 HOLY INFANT KING NOVENA The Shrine of Christ the King was built in 1923 by renowned architect Henry Schlacks as St. Clara Church. Having barely escaped the wrecking ball, this magnificent historic landmark has been given to the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. With only provisional furnishings, the Shrine is already a haven for the transcendent beauty of the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite, dear to our beloved Pope Benedict XVI. The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you. Here, the Divine Infant King, real Symbol for Truth Lived in Charity, will be the center of liturgical worship and devotion. A seventeenth century statue of the Divine Infant King, donated by a generous benefactor, has been solemnly crowned and enthroned above the High altar of the Shrine by His Eminence Francis Cardinal George in December In honor of the Divine Infant King a Votive High Mass of the Nativity is celebrated at the Shrine at 7:00 pm on the 25th day of every month. In preparation for this monthly commemoration of the Infant King, a Novena prayer in His honor is recited after daily Mass from the 17th through the 25th of every month. Novena Prayer VOTIVE MASS OF THE NATIVITY IN HONOR OF THE DIVINE INFANT KING Followed by Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament MONDAY, MAY 25 AT 7:00 PM Choral music provided by Chicago Chorale Missa Pange Lingua, Josquin (c ) Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus/Benedictus, Agnus Dei Offertory Motet: Tu souls qui facis mirabilia, Josquin ( ) Communion Motet: Tantum ergo, Giovanni Palestrina ( ) O Divine Infant Jesus, I have recourse to Thee. Please, through Thy Blessed Mother, assist me in this necessity (mention intention here), because I firmly believe that Thy Divinity can help me. I hope with confidence to obtain thy holy grace. I love Thee with all my heart and with all the strength of my soul. I repent sincerely of my sins and I beg Thee, O Good Jesus, to grant me the strength to triumph over them. I resolve never more to offend Thee and I come to offer myself to Thee with the intention of enduring everything rather than to displease Thee. Henceforth, I desire to serve Thee with fidelity and, for the love of Thee, O Divine Infant, I will love my neighbor as myself. All powerful Infant, O Jesus, I implore Thee again, assist me in this need. Grant me the grace of possessing Thee eternally with Mary and Joseph and of adoring Thee with the angels in the heavenly court. Amen. INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST 06
