LOUIS, CANON TALARICO! Canon Matthew Talarico, Substitute for the Provincial of the Institute in the United States, will be visiting today here at the Oratory. He will be the celebrant of the 10:00AM Solemn High Mass and will pronounce the first sermon of the Novena to the Immaculate Conception. Please come and greet Canon Talarico after Mass in the hall. BEGIN OF THE NOVENA TO THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION I feel like taking you to Lourdes, in France, and particularly into that little (Massabielle) cave where so many things happened. If our eyes were less worldly, we would see there Angel Gabriel who has an indelible memory of the message he had to send two thousand years ago in Nazareth. The meaning of such a message is beautiful, but it is not so easy to send. The Scriptures are very discreet about the Immaculate Conception, on purpose, because Jesus is the one who gives all light. The Immaculate Conception is totally oriented towards the Son who will come down on earth one day. Full of grace : these words include everything, that is to say, the Holy Trinity s presence within a young lady whose name is Mary; a presence that cannot allow any sin: the Immaculate Conception. True love is revealed by actual actions. The Immaculate Conception takes time for her daughter, she smiles to her and shows consideration for her: she trusts Bernadette enough to pass on secrets or missions, such as having a chapel built. Her demands are sweet because she thoroughly loves this little girl from the Pyrenees whom she would lead to heaven. Yes, today, let s all be in Lourdes, let s have our hearts be in that little cave full of meaning in Lourdes. What is it like to be in that Marian city? We have left behind cynicism because, in a world where we thought selflessness was about to disappear, we will be filled with wonder by the smile of those who have realized that giving is to our advantage rather than receiving. Lourdes is the complete opposite to what our modern society praises: a lifestyle devoted to the search of comfort, in which misfortune can t be, in which competing is a must, and in which what s worthy is material success. Lourdes is devotion rather than self-satisfaction; it is moral beauty rather than physical beauty; it is sufferings we can show, we can accept, we can offer; it is hope we can embrace; it is the faith we proclaim without any excuse. In the Massabiel cave, in Lourdes, Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception has given a treasure to us: Lourdes is, for a moment, the world put the right way round. Canon Antoine Boucheron

5 RESIDENTS AT THE RECTORY MR. LUKE DITTMER Dear Faithful of St. Francis De Sales Oratory, I have been here at the Oratory as a candidate since the beginning of September. I am from Burlington, Iowa and come from a small family of one older, handicapped brother and one younger sister who is in college. My mother just earned her doctorate in Business and is a professor of Accounting at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA where I went to college and studied philosophy. The transition from life on a college campus to the Oratory is rather drastic; I feel much more at home here at the Oratory than on the hectic campus. The rhythm of the daily schedule helps to keep one s mind affixed on God. Here at the Oratory, I help Abbé Alex in the sacristy as well as do gardening, yard work, and even some handyman type work around the rectory. I am very blessed to be here; I am sure my fellow candidates hold similar sentiments. The opportunity to be steeped in the traditions of the faith (such as Latin and chant) and to learn the French language is evidence of God s grace. I found out about the Institute from Abbé James Hoogerwerf who spent his candidacy here a few years ago. He helped start and was one of the first Master of Ceremonies of the Traditional Mass in Davenport. As if following in his footsteps, I was the Master of Ceremonies at the Mass in Davenport and now am a candidate here. He has been a wonderful help and told me many wonderful things about the Oratory here before my arrival. As my candidacy continues, I look forward to growing in holiness with you all and, hopefully, inching my way closer to seminary.
