October 29 Seminary Collection On the Feast of Christ the King, primary patronal feast of the Institute, we will take up a second collection for our seminary in Gricigliano. This collection is therefore distinct from the other collections which benefit the Seminary Society and the efforts to help with tuitions for our seminarians. Altar Boy Rehearsal On Sunday, November 5, there will be an Altar Boy practice for any boys who are interested in serving Our Lord on the Altar at St. Francis de Sales Oratory. Insurance Assessment The Oratory s biggest annual financial obligation is that of our property and liability insurance assessment. Our insurance assessment for the fiscal year was $89, This payment was made on time, consisting of $600/week set aside from the Sunday collection and from your generous donations through our envelope program. To reach the total of $89,625.00, the remainder amount of $32, was drawn from our collection surplus and other funds previously set aside for other eminent projects. Please help up us off set this cost by donating today. 5 Feast of Christ the King October 29 The last Sunday of October is the Feast of Christ the King, the solemnity which has particular importance for the Institute, as its titular feast. There are at least two clear references to Christ the King in the Oratory and both are positioned on high. On the ceiling above the high altar there is an interesting representation of the Three Persons of the Trinity. The Latin inscription for the Son is "Christus vincit, Christus regnat" (Christ conquers, Christ reigns). For the Father it reads "Gloria in altissimus Deo." (Glory to God in the Highest). For the Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, it reads "Edoce nos, Spiritus veritatis" (Teach us, Spirit of Truth). The Son sits at the right hand of the Father and the Spirit is below. The First Person of the Trinity is also identified by a single jeweled clasp, whereas the Second Person has two. The intersections of the various circles form three outer triangles filled by cherubim with wings folded in prayer and adoration. The resulting triangle in the center unites the Three Persons, possibly suggested by a single blue orb. The style of all the ceiling paintings, according to early parish documents, is intentionally medieval; i.e. flat, two-dimensional and filled with decorative elements. Father and Son sit enthroned in heaven. Essential, creative energy and power radiate all around. The Son is crowned, has long hair and a short beard, and wears a robe edged with crosses. The Father s hair is white, his beard is long and he wears the Triregnum, the Papal triple tiara, which dates from the mid-14th Century and about which there are diverse interpretations. The church has four bells, including one from the original 1867 church. The largest of the three other bells is dedicated to the special honor of Christ the King, bearing the inscription Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat, i.e. Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands, or according to the 1908 Pfarrbote (Messenger), Christ is victor, Christ is ruler, Christ reigns supreme. Because the reception of Holy Communion is the sign of Divine and Ecclesial unity, only practicing Catholics who are free of mortal sin, and in full communion with the Catholic Church should present themselves for Holy Communion.
