BURKE OCTOBER 11: CONFIRMATIONS, CONFERRED BY HIS EXCELLENCY, BISHOP HERMANN OCTOBER 19: VISIT OF ARCHBISHOP CARLSON NOVEMBER 23: KIRCHWEIHFEST TRADITION FORTOMORROW.COM KIRCHWEIHFEST SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 This year we will see again our Kirchweihfest, the celebration of the consecration of our magnificent church on November 26, According to the tradition here at the Oratory we will offer a festive lunch with German food, catered by Two Mikes Catering, after the 10:00 AM Mass on November 23, 2014, in the church hall. Due to the very special and important occasion of the priestly Ordinations at the Oratory this August, and the related preparations many of you are involved with, we will forgo the yearly Summer at the Oratory event in August, and also the annual Seminary Society Breakfast in the fall. Ordinarily these events build and strengthen our community, but the Ordinations ceremonies will make this an extraordinary year for the Oratory and the entire Institute in the United States. Accordingly, the Kirchweihfest will include several features of the Summer at the Oratory event as well as the Seminary Society Breakfast. It will be an occasion for us to celebrate the many blessings God has bestowed on this wonderful Oratory community, especially the generosity and the fruitful hard work of its members, for which we are most grateful. Please mark your calendars! GLENNON SUNDAY TODAY: SPECIAL COLLECTION Cardinal Glennon Children s Medical Center is a not-for-profit 195-bed inpatient and outpatient pediatric medical center. As the nation s only free -standing, Catholic children s hospital, Cardinal Glennon has provided care for children regardless of ability to pay since Cardinal Glennon primarily serves children from eastern Missouri and southern Illinois, but also treats children across the United States and from countries around the world. This Sunday s special collection aims to support the excellent work of this fine institution. Please read a personal testimony of one of our families who had to spend several weeks at the hospital where their son Vincent was treated with great competence and charity: This year, the appeal for contributions toward Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center is very near and dear to the Pekny family. In the fall of 2013, we spent a great deal of time at this hospital where our son Vincent received excellent care. Due to a congenital heart defect, he has undergone 4 surgeries so far and still has more to go. We have experienced care at this hospital like none other during a very scary first 4 months of our son's life. 4 JULY 19: MASS, ADORATION AND RECEPTION ON THE FEAST OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Saturday, July 19th, is the feast of St Vincent de Paul. In commemoration of this event, we will have Adoration immediately after the 8:00am Mass, followed by a reception in the church basement. Members of the Society of St Vincent de Paul will participate in both Mass and Adoration and will be present at the reception. A representative of the St Louis Council will talk about Vincentian efforts throughout the Archdiocese and elaborate on the uniqueness of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Francis de Sales Oratory. The members of the Society at the Oratory will then describe the work that they do in serving those less fortunate in the vicinity of the Oratory and identify service opportunities that exist in their organization. Beverages and light refreshments will be served. A tour of the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry (attached to the gymnasium) will be available for all who are interested. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. CONFIRMATIONS 2014 The Holy Sacrament of Confirmation will be conferred by HIS EXCELLENCY, BISHOP ROBERT J. HERMANN, at St. Francis de Sales Oratory on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2014, AT 10:00AM. A Solemn High Mass in the presence of His Excellency will be celebrated afterwards. 5 CHOIR CAMP 2014 AUGUST 18-23, 2014 The Institute s Choir Camp 2014 will take place during the third week of August and will be held again in Kentucky at Mount Saint Joseph, the Motherhouse of the Ursuline Order. As in previous years, the campers will be immersed in an authentically Catholic setting of study, prayer, and play under the guidance of faculty members led by Mr. Botkins, Abbé Alex and other adult counselors. The campers daily routine will include studying vocal technique, Gregorian chant, Latin and composition; assisting at daily Mass in the Extraordinary Form; Rosary walks; chanting the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and many opportunities to work together, play together, and perform. A priest of the Institute will be present for daily Mass and confessions. The intensive training from previous camps has already borne rich fruits, and contributed significantly to the beautiful liturgy we experience every Sunday at St. Francis de Sales Oratory. As do many eager campers, we look forward to a fruitful Choir Camp 2014! Make your registrations now. Please contact the rectory office if you are interested. WHAT TO DO WITH A GLUTEN ALLERGY? More and more people are suffering from a serious allergy to gluten, a protein found in many grains including wheat. This can make the reception of Holy Communion difficult for them. For those who have such an allergy, we have hosts made from wheat flour in which the gluten protein has been minimized (it cannot be entirely removed) and therefore is valid matter for the Sacrament. If you are unable to receive Communion due to a serious allergy to gluten, and wish to receive these consecrated Hosts, please be at the end of the Communion line and let the priest know that you need the low-gluten Hosts. 6 ORATORY ORGANIZATIONS ANNOUNCEMENTS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ST. FRANCIS DE SALES COUNCIL KOFC14067.ORG MILITARY CHAPLAINCY Our Council has joined other traditionally-minded KofC Councils to contribute $1,000 towards a new Chancery building in Washington DC itself. The Knights WWI hut program was often the place American soldiers and sailors first encountered a Catholic, and contributed greatly towards eliminating popular anti-catholicism in America. The Order also provided KofC chaplains to supplement the work of the military s Catholic chaplains. There are only about 250 Catholic Chaplains in the military today: 25% of the enlisted men are Catholic, but only 8% of the chaplains are. Please pray for our military. COFFEE HOUR Coffee Hour is a project of the KofC Council. Come to the hall after Holy Mass and have a cup of coffee, a pastry or yogurt, and make some new friends.
