FIESTA GUADALUPANA The Hispanic community of St. Matthew Parish is preparing a fabulous fiesta to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We will start off at 5am in church on Saturday morning December 12th. There will be singing, the rosary, and a light mexican fiesta breakfast. Mass in Spanish will begin at 6:00 pm with mariachi music. Following Mass there will be a huge banquet in the gym complete with roaming Mariachi musicians, folkdances, and lots of fun. Come and worship with us, then enjoy the feast, and dance your heart away! Seasoning Shortly after my mother s second marriage she moved to Hemet, California. I followed a couple of weeks later with my youngest sister, Virginia, in tow. I found a job at a retreat center washing dishes at and prepping the food... slicing carrots, grating cheese, kneading bread dough, chopping up chickens, peeling potatoes, etc. Within a year I was promoted to chef in charge of those prepping the meals and ensuring the food tasted just right. It was then I learned the secret of spices. Spices, or seasonings, can make or break a soup or a main dish and you need just the right amount! I enjoyed experimenting with the various spices and their ability to enhance the flavor of food. God uses seasoning to spice up the lives of us northerners. What would we do without the four seasons of the year? Each adds a different flavor and affects us in a different way. In fact, I like to think of it as 8 seasons of the year chilly fall, freezing cold winter, mushy and warm winter, muddy spring, fragrant spring, mild summer, muggy summer, and then crispy, splendiferous fall with all its colors. The Church in her wisdom also spices up our lives as we move through the year. Last Sunday we began a new Church year with readings from Cycle C, which focus on the Gospel of Luke. (There are three one year cycles A, B, and C). The rhythm of the Church year creates a flavor, as each season impacts us in a different way, spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. The Advent season color purple creates a sense of majesty and beauty as we move from Ordinary Time (green) into the season of anticipation of the coming of the Messiah. This time of the Church year is flavored with excitement and anticipation. The Gloria, a hymn/prayer of praise and petition to the Holy Trinity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is omitted from the liturgy to emphasize that we, like the ancient Israelites, are awaiting the coming of the promised Messiah. We anticipate the birth(day) of Jesus, the Son of God, but even more profoundly, as Christians, we await and we anticipate with longing the second coming of the Messiah, the establishment of the new kingdom of the reign of God on earth. Let us prepare our hearts, minds and souls to open the doors of our hearts, to allow the Lord to shape and mold us into the holy people we are called to be. O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands. Fr Bob 2

3 EMBRACE THE Year of Mercy For centuries in the life of the Church, the Holy Door, solemnly opened by the Pope at the beginning of great Jubilee celebrations, has been a passageway to conversion, to a change of heart and a deeper opening to God. Pilgrims and those seeking to change their life by turning from sin pass through the Holy Door as a gesture of leaving the past behind, crossing a threshold from sin to grace, slavery to freedom, darkness to light, always accompanied by the outpouring of God s grace through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The deepest truth about the Holy Door is that it is a sign of Jesus himself. As he told us, I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture (John 10:9). In reality, Jesus is the door. During the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, from December 8, 2015 (Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception) through November 20, 2016 (Solemnity of Christ the King), Cathedrals, Shrines, and Basilicas in Rome and throughout the world will have a Holy Door. These Holy Doors will become Door[s] of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope (Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus, n.3). The Jubilee Door of Mercy is to be an encounter with Christ. Yet in this Jubilee Year Christ s face is especially merciful, for Jesus Christ is the face of the Father s mercy (Pope Francis, Misericordiae Vultus, n.1). As Pope Francis explains, by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us (n.14). The Holy Door of our Cathedral and of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be opened on Sunday, December 13, 2015, and closed again on Sunday, November 13, During this time our entrance into the church through the Holy Door ought to be a prayer and encounter with Jesus, who is Mercy Incarnate, and who bestows the Father s mercy on all sinners, great and small. Upon leaving the church, our passage through the Holy Door is an impetus to show mercy to others and a grace to lead others through the Door of the Church into a life of joy in the Blessed Trinity. Even the doors of our family home are to be domestic holy doors, especially during this year. In a recent Wednesday audience, Pope Francis explained the Holy Door and its personal impact this way: The recent Synod of Bishops on the Family encouraged families in a particular way to enter this door of mercy and to open the doors of their hearts to others. Jesus tells us that he stands knocking at our door, asking that we open it to him (Rev 3:20). How important it is for us to be good doorkeepers, capable of opening our doors and making our homes places of encounter and welcome, especially to our brothers and sisters in need! Jesus also tells us that he himself is the door (Jn 10:9) which leads to salvation; if we pass through him, we will find lasting security and freedom. May the doors of our Christian homes be signs and symbols of the door of God s mercy, a door ever open to all who knock and desire to meet Jesus. (11/18/15) For more information please contact: Fr. Robert Thorn or Fr. Dan Thelen Diocese of LaCrosse Catholic Daughters Christmas Party The Catholic Daughters will meet Monday, December 14th at 6:00pm for a Christmas Party at St. Therese Church. Please RSVP by December 7th. The cost is $9.00, we are collecting items for Blessings in a Backpack or a gift of money. ADVENT COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICES It is very important to take advantage of the opportunity for reconciliation during Advent. In addition to their regular confession schedules the following parishes will offer an additional Communal Penance Service with the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the times and dates below. Several additional priests will be available to hear confessions. Holy Name Sunday, 12/6 3:00pm St. Anne Saturday, 12/12 10:00am St. Matthew Sunday, 12/13 6:30pm St. Michael Thursday, 12/10 6:30pm St. Therese Monday, 12/21 6:30pm 3 Children s Mass Totes We are so happy that families are using and enjoying the Children s Mass Totes that are in the Parent/Child room. It is our hope that the children having a tote with a quiet activity, a colorful rosary and a Picture Missal gives them something to look forward to when they come to Mass. It is important for the children to feel like they are a part of the Mass celebration. We do ask the parents to please make sure that all items are placed back in the tote before it is returned to the Parent/ Child room following Mass. While doing a recent inventory it was discovered that we are missing 3 of the My Picture Missal books. If one of these books inadvertently was taken home, we appreciate your returning it to the totes. Thank You and God Bless our young families!!

MINISTROS LITÚRGICOS 13 DE DICIEMBRE Introducciones Letty M.
