From the Desk of Fr. Bob St. Augustine and Me St. Augustine is one of my most favorite saints. This coming week on August 28 th we will celebrate the feast of St. Augustine of Hippo (b. 354 d. 430 A.D.). Why do I like St.Augustine? There are two major reasons. First of all at the age of 16 he turned his back on the faith and pursued strange philosophies and beliefs. It wasn t until 16 years later that he came back to the true faith. I was 22 when I turned my back on God and pursued strange philosophies and occult practices; 16 years later, at the age of 38, I was reconverted to the Catholic faith. Secondly, his mother Monica prayed for his conversion day and night. It was the power of her prayers and the grace of God that opened his eyes and revealed that which he had been searching for the Truth. My mother Margaret constantly prayed for me, and I am certain her prayers had a role to play in leading me out of the darkness into the light of truth. The Confessions of St. Augustine details Augustine s journey to God. Below is a beautiful excerpt from this book in which he describes how his unsettled heart found ultimate peace, truth, and love in the recognition of God the Father as the source of all goodness, love and truth. The passage describes my own journey to God. May it be a source of encouragement, strength, and peace for you this week. Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace. Construction Update Tom Hynes will be writing an update in here very soon, but I wanted to let you know how it s going. We are still on schedule to move back into church by the middle of September. The construction of the new gathering space will not be done until November, but we will be able to use the church proper. They have begun re-texturing the ceiling. (Remember we had to have the asbestos scraped off of the ceiling in order to repaint it and put in new LED light fixtures.) We do need help for painting the inside of the church, the back walls, the wall behind the altar, the entire sacristy, and the stairway down to the bathrooms and up to the storage room on the west side of the church. We need volunteers to help with this project. So if you can come and help out please or give Tom Hynes a call so he can let you know the schedule. We will need lots of volunteers to help haul the new pews back over to church and install them. This will be a big project and we need your help. It promises to be a great day of fun and camaraderie. Men s Club The St. Matthew Men s Club meeting will be Thursday, August 27, at 7pm NO ADULT CLOTHING DONATIONS NEEDED The Treasure Sale is still accepting donations through August 29th, but we have an over abundance of adult clothing and have run out of room. It would be helpful if you took your adult clothing items to a charity of your choice. Some local charities that would accept items are St. Vincent, Goodwill or The Neighbors Place. Sorry for any inconvenience! TREASURE SALE REQUEST Book Tent It is time to clean out your bookshelves and closets. The Book Tent is in great need of books of every kind...kid's books, paperbacks, picture books, hard bound, non-fiction, fiction. (Please, no encyclopedias or college text books.) We also sell: school supplies, office supplies, party supplies and stationary. Final Date Treasure Sale Drop-Off Date The FINAL Treasure Sale drop-off is scheduled for Saturday, August 29th, from 9 to 11 AM. Drop-off at the Old Stettin School on Stewart Avenue. Parents will your Graduate be moving?? Newman Connection is an outreach program which keeps high school and college students connected to Catholic campus ministry. When students sign-up with Newman Connection, their information will be automatically sent to the Campus minister at the colleges of their choice. The campus minister can then reach out to the student prior their arrival on campus. This effort has shown great success. Newman Connection keeps students connected to the Catholic Church using technology and social media. It is essential above all, for any adult who teaches the Catholic Faith to receive ongoing formation in order to properly hand on the Faith to the next generation. Ongoing faith formation is necessary as the quality of any form of pastoral activity placed at risk if does not rely on truly competent and trained personnel (General Directory for Catechesis, n. 234) All 2016 catechists are to receive 6 hours of certification credit per year. Over forty youth from area Catholic parishes volunteered their services at The Neighbors Place, Women s Community, Hope Life Center, Wausau Manor, Good News, St. Anthony Spiritual Center, and the Jubilee House. During the week of August 10th through August 14th. Participants from St. Matthew Parish are Robyn, Sabrina, Samantha, and Madison. We are proud of all participants from NCIS. The teens hard work was appreciated by the Community. They learned about a variety of agencies throughout the Wausau Area. Our teens developed new friends and witness to many hands makes the work load light. We thank the parents for all their support. Let the children come to me and do not hinder them." Mark 10:14 Children Liturgy of the Word will resume September 6 th at the 10:00AM Mass. We need your help as Leaders! A pairing of an adult and teen leader is needed for Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) for the school year. Won t you please consider joining the team! The leader guides are user friendly and make for very little preparation. This is a great way for father & son/daughter, mother & son/daughter to share our faith with the young people of St. Matthew s. You decide what Sunday s you are available to lead the Children s Liturgy (usually it s once a month or every 6 weeks). Training is provided. After the showing there will be a panel discussion about the cause, the project, and the impact it has had on their lives. Para comprar la comida, para asistir al colegio o la universidad, al escoger nuestra vocación, si decidimos casarnos o no. A la vez sabemos que al escoger la opción cerramos otras posibilidades. La realidad es que tenemos que escoger algo. Las consecuencias, por lo tanto, son responsabilidad de cada uno. En las lecturas de este domingo se habla sobre la necesidad de escoger. En cada una de ellas vemos que no se puede dejar la decisión para otro día, o para el momento más adecuado. Recuerda algunos momentos en que has tenido que decidir. Cómo te sentiste? Qué decidiste? Te ha traído consecuencias buenas esta decisión o estás arrepentido de ello? Hoy, Jesús termina su discurso del Pan de Vida, haciendo un llamado a sus discípulos a tomar su propia decisión o se quedan con él o se van. "' También ustedes quieren dejarme?' Simón Pedro le respondió: 'Señor, a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna; y nosotros creemos y sabemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios'" (Jn 6, 67-69). Vemos que muchos de sus seguidores se echaron para atrás y se alejaron de él. Jesús no trata de proteger a los Doce. Sino que les deja la libertad de elegir. Por eso su respuesta por medio de Pedro es contundente. La decisión va acompañada siempre de una renuncia de sí mismo. Tal como Jesús renuncio a sí mismo por nosotros. El Papa Francisco nos dice.
