BULLETIN DEADLINE Friday by 4:00pm Visit us online CYCLE B AUGUST 16, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'" Today's Gospel continues Jesus' Bread of Life discourse where he emphasizes over and over again that his followers are to "eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood." Not surprisingly, his listeners don't know what to make of this mysterious teaching. So the quarrels begin. We can imagine what was being said: "He's just using analogies," one man would suggest. "No! He says it's 'true food' and 'true drink,'" another would reply. Others would accuse Jesus of blaspheming, while still others would assert that they believe every word he says. And so it went. This scene is all too common. People encounter a difficult teaching of the faith--one that is challenging to fulfill or difficult to believe--and so they argue about it or rationalize it away instead of just accepting it and living according to it. On a large scale, these sorts of arguments are what lead to the breakdown of Christian unity. Time and time again in history, when a group of people disagrees about a Christian teaching, they splinter off and define their own set of beliefs. Not only does this harm the harmony of the Christian community, but it makes it too easy to avoid the tough parts of the faith. Some of the things Jesus wants us to do are difficult--like respecting God's plan for sexuality or controlling our urges for unrestrained pleasure, power, or profit. Some of the things Jesus taught us are mysterious--like the teaching that the Eucharist is truly his body and blood. But thankfully he has given us his Holy Spirit to help us understand and do what we should. Let's not waste our time arguing about the faith. Let's just live it. Intercessory Prayer: If you are in need of prayer, please call Peggy B. at or the Parish Center at Our prayer group is always ready to be of help when prayer is needed. 2

People pass by him and look at him. But they do not stop, they just continue on their journey, indifferent to him: it is none of their business! How often do we say: it s not my problem! How often do we turn the other way and pretend not to see! Only a Samaritan, a stranger, sees him, stops, lift s him up, takes him by the hand, and cares for him (cf. Lk 10:29-35). (Pope Francis, July 2013, St. Francis of Assisi Hospital). How many of us have passed by the stranger needing help on the street or even wondered what can I do that would make a difference? You have an opportunity to make a difference in someone s life right now! Over the last few years our community has worked together to provide and expand services to serve the area homeless. In February 2013, with the support of the United Way and the Housing and Homelessness Coalition, Catholic Charities opened the doors of the Wausau Community Warming Center; offering a warm meal and a place to get in out of the cold to 15 adult men and women. We soon discovered this facility was not large enough to serve all in need. In October 2013, we opened our new location to not only continue these services but to expand from 15 to 25 and to provide shower and laundry facilities as well. Even though the Warming Center is only open November through April, Catholic Charities has made a commitment to serving the homeless in our community. Through our center coordinator and our St. Lawrence Community Services (SLCS) staff, we continue to meet with many of our guests to build relationships and meet their basic needs. Our SLCS staff is available year-round to work with each guest and help identify steps to get them out of homelessness. Our commitment does not end just because the weather gets warmer. We also continue to prepare to reopen our doors on November 1. As you can see, this community and Catholic Charities have taken steps towards ending homelessness. We look forward to the day when we work ourselves out of business. In the meantime we need your help! Won t you join us in helping those who are on the side of the road? Your dollar could be the one that helps someone wear clean clothes to a job interview. Your dollar could be the one that provides a warm meal. Your dollar could be the one that provides a place for someone to rest their head. Your dollar could be the one that gives hope to an individual who has felt all alone in this wonderful community. On behalf of all those we serve, you have our sincerest gratitude. Roberto Partarrieu, Catholic Charities, Executive Director 3
